Sondre Lerche “Bluish” (Animal Collective Cover)

Sondre Lerche Bluish (Animal Collective Cover) covers

I wouldn’t blame you if you feel like you’ve had it up to here with Animal Collective (okay, maybe I will blame you a little bit). Now the boys of Animal Collective are back in the spotlight of your feed readers,  even though the rush of year-end Merriweather Post Pavilion ranting and raving has come and gone.

Animal Collective ended 2008 with an earth-shattering leak, and they are now ending 2009 as champs and with Sondre Lerche’s cover of the beautiful and somewhat underrated Merriweather Post Pavilion track ”Bluish”.

Acoustic renditions of Animal Collective tracks are always a blessing in my eyes. With the absence of Animal Collective’s signature blips and loops and layers of sound, we get the rare opportunity to appreciate Animal Collective’s simple and pretty melodies and songwriting without (euphoric) distractions.

Listen to Sondre Lerche’s acoustic cover of Animal Collective’s “Bluish” (which happens to be his favorite song of 2009) below: Continue reading →

Florence + The Machine “Last Christmas”

Florence + The Machine Last Christmas covers

PMA will be off for the Holidays. Regular posting will be back on track next Monday, December 28th. Until then, here are a few quick music fixes:

Florence and her machine stopped by Live Lounge and covered Wham’s Christmas classic “Last Christmas”. I think we can all use some George Michael this Holiday Season.

PMA will be off for the Holidays. Regular posting will be back on track next Monday, December 28th. Until then, here are a few quick music fixes:

Here is a new jj song for you all. “Baby” is, apparently, a cover and appears on an “extremely limited 12″ for From Africa to Málaga, as well as new song ‘The Truth’” (via GvsB).

jj – Troublemaker (Akon Cover)

jj Troublemaker (Akon Cover) covers

The elusive and fascinating jj, may or may not be named Pitchfork’s favorite album of the 2009 tomorrow, but we sure as hell loved it. While we were all deciding where jj would make our year-end lists, the Swedish duo covered Akon’s “Troublemaker“. Listen to it below

Lykke Li – Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow

Lykke Li Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow coversPhoto by Benoît Derrier

2008 favorite Lyyke Li is giving away a free mp3 on her site of this Shirelle’s cover. It will cost you an email address. It’s a nice cover, but I would have preferred some new material.

VV Brown – Miss You (Rolling Stones cover)

Meanwhile, British alternative pop star VV Brown covered the Rolling Stones’ “Miss You” during one of her BBC Radio Live Lounge sessions. Continue reading →

Arcade Fire – Maps (Yeah Yeah Yeahs Cover)

One of the best things about music blogs is (re)discovering old, random gems, that link two of your favorite bands in the world together. It happens more often than you imagine. This time, I owe buckets of gratitude to We All Want Someone To Shout For for bringing Arcade Fire’s cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps” back in my life.

There was a time when this cover was a fixture in my daily playlists, but between new laptops and iTunes library transfers, it was somehow lost and I forgot all about it. I wanted to take the opportunity to share it, just in case your mp3 mysteriously flew off your hard drive as well. Or maybe you didn’t know this cover existed? Well now you do. Continue reading →

The Big Pink – Sweet Dreams (Beyonce Cover)

The Big Pink Sweet Dreams (Beyonce Cover) coversPhoto by Emma Svensson

I first heard “Sweet Dreams” a year or two ago, back when it was simply known as “Beautiful Nightmare”, and even then I felt that this song was sort of wasted on Beyonce.

Over the course of a Beyonce album, there will most definitely be a handful of Hip-Pop&B, cross-platform hits that validate it — songs like “Crazy In Love”, “Irreplaceable” and “Single Ladies” that are just so Beyonce. “Sweet Dreams” was a bit more special than that, I felt. A bit too special to be lumped together with such sensory trickery.

I am indescribably glad that the Big Pink played “Sweet Dreams” during their Live Lounge session at BBC Radio 1. Their lo-fi take on Beyonce’s synthesized, pitch-perfect, all-around pop masterpiece feels right at home in the Big Pink’s repertory. In a setting that can be described as the polar opposite of the setting Beyonce and her team created, “Sweet Dreams” still works devastatingly well. Continue reading →

Solange – Stillness Is The Move (Dirty Projectors Cover)

Solange Stillness Is The Move (Dirty Projectors Cover) coversThe blipster of the Knowles family and Queen B’s little sister Solange took the time to cover one of my favorite songs of the year, and I’ll love her eternally for it. Her “Stillness Is The Move” cover is built one of the most recognizable Dr. Dre samples out there (yes, that funky, ear-bending “XXplosive” twang).

Major props to Pitchfork for finally dropping this one. I’ve been dying to hear it ever since Solange tweeted about it back in July! Listen and download to the cover after the jump. Continue reading →

Sia – Under The Milky Way (The Church Cover)

Sia Under The Milky Way (The Church Cover) coversRemember when the other day, you relaxed to the calm grooves of Kelley McRae? Wasn’t that a nice feeling? Wouldn’t you want to experience that feeling again?

Sia has covered The Church’s “Under The Milky Way” and added her own, silky-smooth take on the song, complete with her ambient vocals, a sliding guitar riff, glitzy synths, and a feature in a Lincoln car commercial. A nice take on a nice song, check it out. As blog Battery In Your Leg puts it, “consider this song Zero 7′d.” Continue reading →

Free Atlas Sound Virtual 7″

Free Atlas Sound Virtual 7 covers
Deerhunter’s Badford Cox wants you to download this virtual 7″ single, released under his Atlas Sound moniker, for free on his blog. It features a fantastic cover of The Five Discs’ “Doctor” backed with a track called “The Screens.” I didn’t really get into Atlas Sound’s last album, Logos, but these tunes really hit the spot on a miserable Hump Day like today.
