My Gold Mask – Violet Eyes

My Gold Mask Violet Eyes listenMy Gold Mask, comprised of drummer/vocalist Gretta Rochelle and guitarist Jack Armondo, are going to be the hot new thing. They’ve got that BRKLYN hipster style, and two person bands are all the rage now (No Age, Japandroids, etc.). That said, if My Gold Mask blows up, it won’t be undeserved.

The track “Violet Eyes” is haunting, soulful rock/post-punk/pop/whatever, stripped down rhythms and jangling guitars setting up a bleak yet catchy stage on which Rochelle’s voice can dance. With throaty-white-girl pipes reminiscent of Karen O., Rochelle dances across “Violet Eyes,” staying tight through the verse, and gradually opening up, till her voice skys and slinks through the chorus.

“Violet Eyes” sounds terribly nostalgic, pining for rock played in smoky rooms by badass dames in leather jackets, and that sentiment translates. I wish I could be more critical of a band so ripe for overhyping, but every time I listen to this song I find my toe tapping and my mind drifting. They may not be groundbreaking in any way, but that’s not the point – like a perfect steak dinner, your favorite jeans, or an old flame’s kiss, My Gold Mask infuses some heart into the mundane, and makes it beautiful.

Max Tundra – Which Song (Passion Pit Remix)

Max Tundra Which Song (Passion Pit Remix) mp3

Max Tundra, nee Ben Jacobs, is a very nice person, I’m sure, and his song, the Laurel & Hardy-esque titled “Which Song,” is a perfectly nice song, and Passion Pit’s remix is full of the lo-fi, uplifting beats and synth-sounds that made Manners so much fun. Still, it’s not a good sign when the main characteristic of a song is that it is “nice.”

I want to tell “Which Song” that I like it too much to ever be romantic with it. “Which Song” is in the musical friend zone. Jacobs’ vocals just don’t ever challenge the listener or command your attention the way, well, Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos’ do. More whiny than plaintive, when Jacobs sings about a girl leaving him for another man, well, I kind of understand.

Worth checking out if you like Passion Pit, but you’re much better off just re-listening to “Sleepyhead” or “Little Secrets” to get your falsetto fix. Download it below:  Continue reading →

Dirty Projectors – Ascending Melody

Dirty Projectors Ascending Melody listen

Dirty Projectors just released an EP for their track “Temecula Sunrise” that will also include another Bitte Orca track “Cannibal Resource”. From the EP, we do receive two exclusive tracks that did not make it on their album release. Unfortunately for those Stateside, the EP is only being released in the UK, but we do have “Ascending Melody” available for you  and we think that it is just amazing.

It’s a jam session where the vocals harmonize sweetly and the guitars are complicated and add a nice flair to a vocally driven track. By the end you’re clapping along as if you were there for the session. Listen to the track below and just enjoy the experience of “Ascending Melody”. Continue reading →

VV Brown – Crazy In Love (Beyonce Cover), PMA Premiere

YouTube Preview Image

VV Brown transforms Beyonce’s Pitchfork-adored “Crazy In Love” into a pumped-up, folksy flurry of energy. It’s the latest track in her series of live covers. Past covers include Kid Cudi’s “Day N Nite” and Drake’s “Best I’ve Ever Had.” Her frantic rendition of “Crazy In Love” is easily the best of the bunch and has a killer chance of becoming my favorite cover of the year.

Make sure to check out VV Brown’s latest release, The Attic EP on iTunes. You can now download VV Brown’s “Crazy In Love” cover on MP3! Continue reading →

Music on Gossip Girl: Season 3 Episode 8

Music on Gossip Girl: Season 3 Episode 8 music

Last night’s episode of Gossip Girl relied heavily (more than usual) on its music. It also featured plenty of low-key gems to keep you going until next week’s episode. One of the most impressive playlists on the series.

Gossip Girl, Season 3, Episode 8: The Grandfather: Part II

Roisin Murphy – Orally Fixated

Roisin Murphy Orally Fixated listen

Is it just me or is Roisin taking cues from Shakira? Maybe just a little? Song title and single cover aside, “Orally Fixated” sounds like typical Roisin Murphy nosh – gritty, nostalgic, and sometimes underwhelming. I’m sure “Orally Fixated” will please her fans and pump them up for an upcoming record.

Pitchfork reports that in the UK, “Orally Fixated” will drop November 16 via AWAL. In the States, the single should be available on iTunes. And apparently The Guardian will offer a free download for 48 hours. You can listen to the new single below: Continue reading →

The Antlers, Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton MA 9/26

The Antlers, Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton MA 9/26 gig reviews
I spent most of the Antlers’ set at Northampton’s tiny, almost empty Iron Horse Music Hall wondering why they weren’t doing it for me. When I wasn’t thinking about this I was considering wearing earplugs to shows and I was thinking about where I was going to catch the bus back to where I live and wondering if it was possible to read four parts of Virgil’s Aeneid in twenty-four hours (fortunately, it’s possible, but I don’t recommend it). This is an issue because when I go to a good show I can think of nothing but lyrical and sound progressions and what’s going to be next, what’s going to be next? I don’t care about my inevitable hearing loss or bus schedules or homework, especially. I don’t care about making a fool of myself with ridiculous dance moves and ecstatic cheering when the band breaks out some classic jam. I don’t think about why this is working or why this isn’t working. If I did think about all these things, I would probably have no place reviewing concerts. I was a little upset with myself that I let my mind wander so much, but customarily when you are in the front row watching a band perform a bunch of tracks from their breathtaking album you have to try to let your mind go elsewhere. Four Tet – Love Cry

Four Tet Love Cry listen

A laptop has never sounded so personable, so human, so fragile than when in the hands of Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden. His latest offering, “Love Cry,” is a nine-minute, fully charged number that is as engaging as it is beautiful. Once the vocal sample kicks in, the piece moves in fluid, singular motions. Though it is meticulously conceived as up-tempo, chill-out music, “Love Cry” is brimming with curiosity and euphonious soul.

“Love Cry” will be available on a limited-edition 12″ single, backed by “Our Bells” starting November 2nd via Domino. You can listen to “Love Cry” below: Continue reading →

Yeasayer – Ambling Alp

Yeasayer Ambling Alp listenYeasayer are giving away “Ambling Alp,” the first single off their sophomore LP, Odd Blood on their website. You can also purchase a “very limited” 12″ vinyl containing the single and instrumental plus remixes by Memory Tapes and DJ /rupture, all enclosed in a “space age metallic sleeve.” Well worth the $8, if you ask me.

“Ambling Alp” is the type of bright, weird pop gem that you yearn for, without knowing it. But the satisfaction that comes after the first few listens is undeniable. Yeasayer’s upcoming album, Odd Blood is out February 9th on Secretly Canadian.

Yeasayer – Ambling Alp

In other news, Spoon announced a 7th album. It will be called Transference and it will be out on January 26th. Here is the tracklist: Continue reading →

Lil Wayne ‘No Ceilings’ Mixtape – Free Download [OFFICIAL VERSION]

Lil Wayne No Ceilings Mixtape Free Download [OFFICIAL VERSION] listenLil Wayne might be heading to jail, but that won’t stop him from spewing out monster mixtapes. I’m thinking this will be one of the last proper mixtapes we’re getting from Weezy in a while, so make sure you grab it. No Ceilings features recycled beats by Jay-Z, Black Eyed Peas, and even Lady GaGa/Kid Cudi/Kanye West. Major props to HustleGRL for the mad artwork for No Ceilings.

UPDATE2: No official tracklist (order wise) yet. smh… I swear this tape has been such a hassle haha! Tomorrow, the FINAL one will be available. Until then, just enjoy the music haha.
