Music From Gossip Girl: Season 3, Episode 9 listenThis season of Gossip Girl has been slow and (more often than not) boring. So slow and boring that I just watched episode 9, thus the tardiness of this post.

I’m going to switch up the way I do these because the plot hasn’t been the only thing taking a toll this season. I’ll still give you every week’s full playlist, but I’ll focus on the tracks that truly made the episode special.

Vampire Weekend California English (Live) listenEzra is jumping on the auto-tune? Is this the Discovery influence coming to play? Is auto-tune the new trend in indie rock? These questions can wait, because you have to go listen and/watch Vampire Weekend perform a new track off their highly anticipated sophomore album Contra.

The track in question is “California Enlgish,” and I think I love it already. The energy Vampire Weekend perform it with is rejuvenating and refreshing. Within a couple of listens, you will be trying to sing along. Within 15 seconds, your toes will surely be tapping along to the fantastic beat. Solange Stillness Is The Move (Dirty Projectors Cover) coversThe blipster of the Knowles family and Queen B’s little sister Solange took the time to cover one of my favorite songs of the year, and I’ll love her eternally for it. Her “Stillness Is The Move” cover is built one of the most recognizable Dr. Dre samples out there (yes, that funky, ear-bending “XXplosive” twang).

Sia has covered The Church’s “Under The Milky Way” and added her own, silky-smooth take on the song, complete with her ambient vocals, a sliding guitar riff, glitzy synths, and a feature in a Lincoln car commercial. Charlotte Hatherley – Full Circle

Charlotte Hatherley Full Circle listenYou probably know Charlotte as the guitarist that has played with Bat for Lashes. At least, that’s how I know her. And I didn’t even know THAT until I saw them live. Either way, I was pretty stoked to find out that she has solo work because I assumed, if she’s played for Bat for Lashes — and I love Bat for Lashes — then I should love Charlotte Hatherley. If a+b=c, and a+ … blah blah blah–I failed to realize that logic doesn’t automatically mean you’re going to love someone. So what all this brings me to is that I didn’t really care for “Full Circle.” I mean, Natasha Khan’s vocals are so much better …

Animal Collective – Bleeding (Live)

Animal Collective Bleeding (Live) listenAnimal Collective’s new 10″ for “Brother Sport” has been released. Buy the gorgeous 10″ slab of wax at Domino’s E-Mart. The single features every AnCo die-hard’s favorite Merriweather Post Pavilion track “Brother Sport” (or is it “Brothersport”?), backed with the live track “Bleeding.”

I Guess I’m Floating has an mp3 of the nearly-10 minute opus. While “Bleed” definitely sounds like it lives within “Bleeding”, I’m not sure you would call the two tracks one in the same. The track sprawls on for nearly 10 minutes, flexing Animal Collective’s sonic prerogative to essentially play what they want whilst making listeners feel like a lonely astronaut floating in outer-space. Better yet, releasing a live version of a track soon to appear on their December EP only reinforces the fact we all like pretending to know where they’re taking their sound but haven’t the slightest idea.

Deerhunter’s Badford Cox wants you to download this virtual 7″ single, released under his Atlas Sound moniker, for free on his blog. It features a fantastic cover of The Five Discs’ “Doctor” backed with a track called “The Screens.” I didn’t really get into Atlas Sound’s last album, Logos, but these tunes really hit the spot on a miserable Hump Day like today.

Delta Spirit – People C’mon

Delta Spirit People Cmon listenI was immediately drawn into “People C’mon” by Delta Spirit off their debut album, Ode to Sunshine. They have been compared to Cold War Kids, and with reason, but that’s not a bad thing in my book.

The piano melody about half way through the song combined with some “papapas” and “lalalas” by lead singer Matthew Vasquez make the song for me. Scratch that: everything makes this song–it’s simply just well put together. And hey, they’re the kind of band that uses trash can lids as an instrument. So if you’re into that sort of thing and don’t find it overly trite, then you’ll probably find yourself quite pleased and even have a new favorite band to keep an eye/ear/whatever out for.

Hot Chip – Take It In, New Album

Hot Chip Take It In, New Album listen
Earlier today, I mentioned that we’ll be listening to a new Hot Chip album in February of next year, and now I can report that the new album will be called One Life Stand (amazing title) and it will hit shelves February 9th in the US and on the 8th in the UK.

According to Pitchfork via NME, One Life Stand features drumming from Charles Hayward of experimental 1970s group This Heat as well as Leo Taylor of London indie band the Invisible.

What’s better yet is that we can now listen to the first track off One Life Stand, “Take It In,” thanks to the ever-generous Pitchfork and Lala.com. Listen to it after the jump: Continue reading →
