Fred Falke: Blow My Speakers Up

Fred Falke: Blow My Speakers Up mp3How do you remix a nearly 10-minute epic journey in high-life pop? Remix master Fred Falke seems to think he knows how. Silly Fred. I don’t think I can honestly tell anyone that Falke’s remix of Music Go Music’s “Warm In The Shadows” improved upon the song or its dance appeal.

Music Go Music – Warm In The Shadows (Fred Falke Remix)

But it’s okay Freddie, we still heart you. More so than before because you jeopardized your cool indie cred and remixed our favorite party girl guilty pleasure dirty pop song of 2009.

Max Tundra – Which Song (Passion Pit Remix)

Max Tundra Which Song (Passion Pit Remix) mp3

Max Tundra, nee Ben Jacobs, is a very nice person, I’m sure, and his song, the Laurel & Hardy-esque titled “Which Song,” is a perfectly nice song, and Passion Pit’s remix is full of the lo-fi, uplifting beats and synth-sounds that made Manners so much fun. Still, it’s not a good sign when the main characteristic of a song is that it is “nice.”

I want to tell “Which Song” that I like it too much to ever be romantic with it. “Which Song” is in the musical friend zone. Jacobs’ vocals just don’t ever challenge the listener or command your attention the way, well, Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos’ do. More whiny than plaintive, when Jacobs sings about a girl leaving him for another man, well, I kind of understand.

Worth checking out if you like Passion Pit, but you’re much better off just re-listening to “Sleepyhead” or “Little Secrets” to get your falsetto fix. Download it below:  Continue reading →

Cool Kids x Hey Champ – (We Are) Champions

Cool Kids x Hey Champ (We Are) Champions listenIt’s very refreshing to see the versatility of a young group like Hey Champ. Though their roots lie more in indie-electro music, they don’t limit themselves to a singular label or genre. With the newly released single, (We are) Champions, they’re dabbling in hip-hop for the first time, and the result is straight dopeness.

The Cool Kids version of Champions that came out earlier this year was great- in an NBA Live/ ESPN kind of way (I think it was actually used for a commercial or video game?) Hey Champ has made it their own now, completely changing everything but Mikey and Chuck’s signature freestyles. You can’t even recognize this joint as being anything close to the original.

This track will definitely appeal to a wider and more diverse group. Hey Champ has created a smooth ballad-like joint fusing the Cool Kids’ rhythmic freestyles with their own very fresh instrumentals and vocals.

It’s nice to see two genres of music co-exist like this, and actually enhance each other. Big ups to Hey Champ for this remix, it might be the best thing I’ve heard all week. Continue reading →

Ellie Goulding – Starry Eyed / (Jakwob Remix)

Ellie Goulding Starry Eyed / (Jakwob Remix) listenWe recently posted Ellie Goulding’s official debut single, titled, “Under the Sheets,” along with some stand out covers she produced before getting picked up by Neon Gold. The London electronic pop musician shows off her power as an artist (backed by producer Starsmith) with another track off her upcoming/currently in progress debut album.

“Starry Eyed” gives better sense of the talent she has than “Under the Sheets.” The track displays the power of her voice, as well as, unique pop hooks and catchy/memorable synths. She has an extremely intriguing voice that reminds us somewhat of Little Boots. But she’s not just any cliché UK electronic pop princess wannabe. Expect great things from her in the near future as more of her music begins to surface (we’re just saying, we love her for a reason)!

The track also gets remix attention from Jakwob. The dubstep remix illuminates Goulding’s brilliant voice and adds to the already existent danceable beat. Continue reading →

Fever Ray – Seven (The Twelves Remix), PMA Premiere

Fever Ray Seven (The Twelves Remix), PMA Premiere music

Fever Ray’s current single “Seven” is a smooth, filmy track about daydreaming in your youth… about suicide. At least that’s what I got from it. But despite it’s dark undertones, there’s no reason why “Seven” shouldn’t be a jam.

The Twelves and I shared these sentiments and I’m psyched to premiere their Halloween-like disco remix of Fever Ray’s “Seven.” Continue reading →

The Big Pink – Dominos (Switch Remix)

The Big Pink Dominos (Switch Remix) mp3
Mad Decent just dropped this one on us. Esteemed M.I.A. and Santigold producer, and one half of Major Lazer, Switch has transformed The Big Pink’s somewhat silly “Dominos” into a super jam that should not be absent this weekend.

Marina & The Diamonds – Mowgli’s Road (Mille Remix)

Marina & The Diamonds Mowglis Road (Mille Remix) mp3We introduced you to Mille and their thunderous “Crysteena” a few weeks ago, and now we’re excited to share their official remix of Marina & The Diamonds’ new single, “Mowgli’s Road.”

Mille are quickly becoming one of my favorite new producers. This one is ready for the dancefloors and weekend parties, and will probably go down as one of my favorite remixes of 2009.

Midnight Juggernauts – This New Technology (Memory Tapes Remix)

Midnight Juggernauts This New Technology (Memory Tapes Remix) mp3Memory Tapes remixes label mates Midnight Juggernauts’ new single “This New Technology” into this pulsating, synth monster. The remix is very different from anything we heard on Memory Tapes’ debut album, Seek Magic.

In fact, if it wasn’t for Dayve Hawk trying to snag as much press as he possibly can for Memory Tapes, this remix would have probably been released under the more fitting, Weird Tapes moniker. Either way we’ve got ourselves a great remix for the weekend. Continue reading →

Theophilus London – Pull My Heart Away (The xx Remix)

Theophilus London Pull My Heart Away (The xx Remix) mp3

I haven’t really touched on Theophilus London on the blog, mostly because I’m not completely sold on the guy yet. However, this track is pretty damn great. Theophilus added some verses onto The xx’s exquisite, dubstep remix of Jack Penate’s “Pull My Heart Away,” and it works great. The remix has been one of my favorites of 2009, but Theophilus London’s presence on the track is empowering and an asset to the overall experience.

Electro-rap is so early 2k9. Dupstep-hop will be big in 2k9.9-2k10.

Phoenix – Armistice (YACHT Remix)

Phoenix Armistice (YACHT Remix) mp3
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Remix Collection) is shaping up to be a killer. It’s filled with remixes that will move your feet, and other remixes that will connect with you on a deeper level. Listening though them all, YACHT’s remix of “Armistice” is a clear standout.

The remix is quite tame, compared to some of the chaos that went down on YACHT’s SeeMystery Lights, or their remix of Wolfmother’s “New Moon Rising,” but the mid-tempo bleeps and slabs of synth fit the aesthetic of “Armistice” like a glove. It’s an artsy and fresh view on a late 00’s classic, but I don’t think anything will top the original. But I’m still chalking this one up as a victory for YACHT, as well as Phoenix for continuing to prove to be the most remix-friendly act of 2009. As far as I can tell, this is a PMA first, so have go listen to the remix! Continue reading →
