Hannah Montana Hits #1, Silversuns Debut High. KOL, YYYs, DCFC Sell, Too!

After missing the No. 1 spot on it’s debut week, The Hannah Montana Movie’s Soundtrack has finally topped the American Album charts, thanks to strong Box Office numbers. In just 12 days of release, the movie has grossed nearly $60 million in the US. This week’s big debuts are Diddy’s Day26 and their newest, Forever In A Day, which bowed at No. 2 with 115,209 copies sold. Silversun Pickups also debut high with their newest, Swoon, selling almost 49,000 copies in the first 7 days of release (No. 5).

The rest of the top 10 is typical — though I am impressed with the Twilight Soundtrack (No. 4 and features Muse, Iron & Wine,  Black Ghosts, et al) and Taylor Swift’s Fearless (No. 10). After months of being on the shelves, they are still moving Top 10 numbers, selling 56,618 and 31,209 respectively. Sidenote: Wonder why Radiohead’s “15 Step” wasn’t included in the Twilight soundtrack, the song was playing throughout the entire closing credits. What? Radiohead licensed the song for worldwide play in the movie, but doesn’t want to bank on all of these Soundtrack sales? That’s just stupid… As of January 2009, the Twilight soundtrack has sold 2 million copies world wide.

In other sales news,  Kings of Leon is outselling Beyonce with their Only By The Night. The set sold nearly 19,000 this week, landing at No. 18. Also, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are up nearly 20 spots this week, thanks to TV appearances on just about every late night show in existance. This week, It’s Blitz sold 12,478 and reentered the Top 50 at No. 32. Further down the chart, Death Cab For Cutie’s new Open Door EP debuts at No. 34 with just over 12,000 copies sold.

New Chiddy Bang Song Coming Tomorrow

I don’t usually do stuff like this, but I’m pretty excited. Chiddy Bang consists of a few young, talented, and very promising guys that are making some great music. Tomorrow I will post a new song by the group. It’s their best song yet — and it samples a song everyone is familiar with. You’ll love it.

All Points West Line-Up Announced!

“Coldplay, Tool and the Beastie Boys will headline the second annual All Points West Music & Arts Festival, to be held July 31- Aug. 2 at Liberty State Park in New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan,” reports Billboard.

I always wondered why the poster or website never say that. They make it sound like APW is somewhere in the sticks the way Coachella is. “Tickets go on sale April 3. Single day tickets are $89, while three-day passes start at $199. Organizers are offering several lay-away options as well.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit Friends of Liberty State Park, which is working to make environmentally friendly improvements to the venue.”

Be it eco-friendly sticks or eco-friendly metropolis, I want to go to All Points West. Sure, Radiohead isn’t on the roll like it was last year, but I’m sure Coldplay and the Beasties will try to make up for that.

The full three day 2009 All Points West lineup is: Continue reading →

Phoenix Playing SNL Next Week!

Wow…talk about a quick rise to fame.

After releasing two brilliant singles from their upcoming album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, the frenchie-pop-rockers will be rocking SNL on April 4th, on a Seth Rogen-hosted episode.

I realize that SNL is maintaining its indie cred by getting awesome Pitchfork-rockers to play (TV On The Radio, Death Cab, Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes), but Phoenix surprised me, mostly due to the fact that they just haven’t MADE IT in the way that the aforementioned bands have. Those four all had ridiculous album sales, whereas Phoenix’s first few cds were loved by the indie-rock crew and not much else. Those four all had some radio play, while I haven’t heard “Listzomania” or “1901″ on the radio once. So although I am in no way criticizing SNL’s decision to get such a great band on their show, I’m just a tad surprised. All that’s for sure is that it will lead to a HEAVY sales boost for the band, who will most likely rock their insanely catchy songs incredibly well live.

Ben Folds Gets All Collegiate On Us

Ben Folds Gets All Collegiate On Us music

We all know how much Ben Folds loves colleges and a cappella bands. As a matter of fact, he is constantly on the college circuit, recently hitting up universities with both PMA fave Miniature Tigers and world fave Jason Mraz. At all of these shows, he makes sure to bring out the college’s a cappella group to do a few songs for the enthusiastic audience (this happened wonderfully at the Princeton show I attended, and seems to happen everywhere he goes). At that concert, Folds talked about an album he was mixing and recording featuring all of these great college crews covering his songs. And now, that album is finally (almost) here. Full with covers of Ben Folds Five classics, Ben Folds solo classics, and ultimately just great songs, this album is certainly one to get pumped about.

At the Princeton show, Folds excitedly ran on stage, prompting the Nassoons to play another song, and the group’s leader lit up like you would not believe. What is great about those moments at his shows, along with this album, is that Folds is just as thrilled to be doing this as the bands are. He considers this to be an actual record of his:

“This is not a novelty .. I consider this my new record…I’m incredibly proud of this. If this were Ben World, this would be my greatest hits album. I’d rather this be my greatest hits record than someone collecting my masters and slapping on a photo of me leaning against a piano. This is a better way. I’m a songwriter, and these are my songs.”

Along with all of the covers, Folds himself has recorded a cappella versions of two songs, one being Way To Normal standout “Effington.” Click on for two videos: the University of Rochester Midnight Ramblers covering “Army” and the UNCG Spartones’ beautiful take on “Not The Same.” The album, Ben Folds Presents: University A Cappella, drops April 28th. Kanye West Just Got Even MORE Animated

So is this stupid, cool, or a mixture of both?

Kanye West has recently wrapped lending his voice to a guest character on Seth MacFarlane’s upcoming Family Guy spinoff, The Cleveland Show. In a heavy voice-acting stretch, Kanye West will be playing…Kenny West! The buzz on Yeezy’s performance is that is is excellent, that he “nailed” the character.

Are you guys looking forward to this? To The Cleveland Show in general? Or should MacFarlane have just left the Kanye West impersonation to himself, and kept Cleveland in Quahog with the Griffins?

Benjamin Button stand-out Taraji P. Henson will also lend her voice to the show as a guest.

Kid Cudi Retires After A Soon-To-Be-Big OH-9

Kid Cudi Retires After A Soon To Be Big OH 9 listen
It’s not April 1st yet, so why is KiD CuDi, or what his fans effectionately call him, Cudders all-caps blogging about retiring from the game after his debut album drops later this year? At least Lupe Fiasco had the balls to stick it out for 3 albums…

In his infuriatingly improper rant, the Kid says the “drama” that comes with being a star is worse than the stuff he had to deal with while he was piss broke. And because of said drama, he wants to drop out of the game before his peers (and his suppressors) “crucify” him. Cudi also asks his fans and judges to not think of his leave of absence as quitting, because apparently, he has accomplished his goal. His goal was to 1) establish a fanbase, 2) have multiple big records, and 3) receiving critical acclaim from the tastemakers all before releasing a full album.

What kind of career goals are those? That sounds like a bullet-proof dream start to a fantastic and long career, not something that encompasses Kid Cudi’s full potential — and believe me, he has enough potential to spare.

But all this is okay because it’s all bullshit. Right? Read on for Kid Cudi’s entire tirade. Continue reading →

Death Cab Readying New EP

Death Cab Readying New EP headline shorties

As a big fan of Narrow Stairs, I can’t wait to hear four more songs that Gibbard and friends cooked up in the recording process. From Nick Harmer, a description:

“When we finished Narrow Stairs, there were four extra songs that, because we were trying to put together an album, we ended up not including them — it’s not like they’re castoffs or anything; they’re part of the Narrow Stairs experience … They needed to have a proper home, and the EP is it. There’s going to be four songs on it, plus the original version of ‘Talking Bird’ that features Ben singing and playing the ukulele. It’ll be out this year, I think. And then, you know, back to the grind again.”

While the “Talking Bird” altered version doesn’t interest me too much, the rest does. I’m pretty pumped, and glad that a band like Death cab has found a way to keep their songs fresh for so long. (Thanks to Stereogum)
