Prolific’s 10 Best Protest Songs Of The 21st Century

Every war since WWII has inspired some sort of a cultural backlash against the powers that be. Sometimes it’s a movie like W. but more often than not, these artistic expressions are protest songs. We take a look at the best protest songs of the 21st century:

10. “Let’s Impeach the President” – Neil Young (April 28, 2006)

Prolifics 10 Best Protest Songs Of The 21st Century interesting readsThis is the seventh track on Young’s 2006 studio album Living with War. It starts off with a trumpet playing the first six notes of Taps, then having a chorus sing about various reasons to impeach the current president of the United States George W. Bush. The song is sung to the tune of Steve Goodman’s song “The City of New Orleans,” probably a reference to 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, another area of critical views. The “Godfather of Grundge” makes clear that he has no love for President Bush.

9. “Final Straw”- R.E.M. ( Oct. 4, 2004)

This is a politically-charged song, reminiscent in tone of “World Leader Pretend” on Green. The version on the album is a remix of the original version. “Final Straw” was released the week the U.S. invaded Iraq. Michael Stipe is not willing to let Bush invade Iraq without a clear reason, so he keeps asking “Why?” Well, most of us still still don’t have a clue (maybe oil).

8. ”The Day After Tomorrow”- Tom Waits (Oct. 3, 2004)

Prolifics 10 Best Protest Songs Of The 21st Century interesting readsTom Waits covered increasingly political subject matter since the advent of the Iraq war, with “The Day After Tomorrow”. In this song Waits adopts the persona of a soldier writing home that he is disillusioned with war and is thankful to be leaving. The song does not mention the Iraq war specifically, and, as Tom Moon writes, “it could be the voice of a Civil War soldier singing a lonesome late-night dirge.” Waits himself does describe the song as something of an “elliptical” protest song about the Iraqi invasion, however. Thom Jurek describes “The Day After Tomorrow” as “one of the most insightful and understated anti-war songs to have been written in decades. It contains not a hint of banality or sentiment in its folksy articulation.” Waits’ recent output has not only addressed the Iraqi war, as his Road To Peace deals explicitly with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Middle East in general.

7. “When the President Talks to God” – Bright Eyes (March 21, 2005)

This is a protest song by Bright Eyes, with a very pointed political message directed towards George W. Bush and his policies. Even the Greeks claimed that the Olympian Gods were on their side, when they tried to muster political fervor. It’s good to see that Bush’s is taking cues from ancient Greek warlords. ”When the President Talks to God,” was originally released as a free download on iTunes but has since been released as a promotional 7″ vinyl and as a B-side to “First Day of My Life.” Right away Conor Oberst stuffs the President’s “bullshit,” right back down his throat.

6. “Heard Somebody Say” – Devendra Banhart (December 20, 2005)

Prolifics 10 Best Protest Songs Of The 21st Century interesting readsThis soft and mellow ballad sounds sweet and calming for the average listener. However, if you stop and listen closely to the lyrics, you’ll here the resignation of a sincere and kindhearted war protester. Banhart sings “that the war ended today/ but everyone knows it’s goin’ still” This is a reference to George W. Bush’s premature declaration of victory in Iraq on June 5, 2003. Since then, more U.S. troops died than during the official “war.” Banhart succinctly sums up his message: “oh, it’s simple/ we don’t want to kill.”

Top 10 Singles in the World, week 41

Top 10 Singles in the World, week 41 charts musicI’ve always been interested in the music charts — I keep tabs on the happenings of America’s music charts via Idolator’s fantastic column, 100 and Single written by chart guru Chris Monalphy. But much more interesting is the Global Track Chart, which monitors the top songs in the world.

This week at the GTC, Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” takes the No. 1 spot for the 7th week running. As it turns out, Katy Perry’s bi-curious summer jam caught on late in Europe and Australia. Though “I Kissed A Girl” has dropped off to No. 31 in the US’ Top 100 singles chart (though her new single “Hot ‘N Cold” is currently sitting at No. 6 — expect that to chart worldwide in 2-3 months). The rest of the chart seems pretty straightforward: Rihanna, no surprises here, P!nk, Coldplay, T.I., Kanye West, Pussycat Dolls. The only thing I’d like to mention is Kid Rock’s appearance in the Global chart. In the US, Kid Rock’s radio-friendly “All Summer Long” wasn’t released on iTunes guaranteeing (and limiting) its charting position into the lower 30’s-40’s. However, in Europe, the single has been made available digitally.

With Katy Perry’s washed up single at No. 1 and Kid Rock’s anti-charting song in the Top 10, it’s clear that America’s music chart isn’t as dominating as I thought it was. Talk about reality check.

New Bloc Party Album, ‘Intimicy’ in 2 Days

Bloc Party
You know what? I can’t honestly say that I’m really excited about the direction Bloc Party has put their music in, as we’ve had a chance to hear in “Flux,” and “Mercury,” but a fan, I am never the less. Bloc Party’s first two albums were just to damn good for me to quit on them just yet. Also, taking a look at the tracklist, songnames like “Trojan Horse,” “Halo,” and Zephyrus” catch my attention. On the up side, I don’t have to wait very long to decide if I like their new album or not because… well, it is out in 2 days. August 21st marks the date Bloc Party’s highly anticipated/dreaded album, Intimicy, will be available on the digital market . The physical CD will be released on October 27th (pre-order). If you order the CD you will also benefit from the digital release on August 21st so that should be the way to purchase it for sure!*

Here’s to In Rainbows and Radiohead for starting this instant-online-gratification trend with today’s music. Oh, and here’s to Bloc Party and their tracklist! Here! Here!

The tracklisting for Intimacy:
1. Ares
2. Mercury
3. Halo
4. Biko
5. Trojan Horse
6. Signs
7. One Month Off
8. Zephyrus
9. Better Than Heaven
10. Ion Square

To my surprise, Intimacy was produced by the duo that produced Silent Alarm and Weekend In The City so the new sound is being developed with a familiar team. It might not be much of a hot mess after all.

NME’s 25 Bands Making America Cool Again

NMEs 25 Bands Making America Cool Again interesting reads

Woo hoo! I’m definitely glad NME released this list. For a second I was starting to get consumed by British/foreign music. It’s cool to know that America is cool again. Here’s what the press release regarding the new NME issue said.

As the USA steals itself for a new president this year, it seems the country is also undergoing something of a musical revolution. In its latest issue “We [Love] USA” iconic British music magazine NME, celebrates the 25 American acts who are whipping up a storm on both sides of the Atlantic — signalling the re-birth of the US music scene!

Alex Miller, New Bands Editor for NME said: “Right now I can barely go a day without coming across a new genius band from the States. While the art scene of Brooklyn or the punks of LA are keeping the underground fascinating, the ceaseless ambitions of Lil Wayne and the Kings Of Leon are making the Chili Pepper and Fiddy Cent clichés of the mainstream redundant. If only it wasn’t so bloody hard to get a green card!”

Obviously Vampire Weekend are leading the cool cats in their lives’ most important task yet — making the American music scene cool again. As already mentioned, Weezy and Kings of Leon are are to support the Ivy League-ers in the battle.

New Britney Spears Album Release Date – Mid-December

Britney Spears

Britney Spears fans (like me) will have even more to look forward to this Christmas.

From The #1 Britney Spears Fansite BreatheHeavy.com:

“Britney Spears is definitely in the studio and working on a new album,” a source tells FoxNews.com. “[Britney] is working on a CD that Jive is expecting to get out by mid-December.”

According to the source, “the album is a follow-up to “Blackout… many of the same producers and writers will be on this one, too.” Fine by me; “Blackout” has been her best album to date in my opinion. Although I do love me some Indyzone.

But why the rush to put out an album? “One reason for the big push to put Britney back in stores is that she owes Jive a lot of money. If they can finish the album and get it out without incident, my guess is that Spears will go out on tour in 2009.”

Last month, Jive Records announced that they were going to stop releasing any more singles off Britney’s Blackout — leaving many fans kind of confused, arguing that Blackout still had many single-quality tracks up its sleeve. But the truth is that Britney’s been in the studio.

Here is what wiki has to say:

 • Music producers, JR Rotem and Sean Garrett, whom worked with Spears on her previous album, Blackout, told People that they are back in the studio with Spears. A source also told the magazine that she is in the experimental stages of a new album and Spears is trying to find the sound and direction she wants to go in.
 • Music producer, Guy Sigsworth spoke with the Los Angeles Times and said that he has signed on to work with Spears on her upcoming album due out later in the year. Sigsworth previously produced her single, Everytime in 2004.
 • Britney’s aunt, Chandra McGovern told Britain’s The Sun that Spears is working on a new album and could go head to head with Whitney Houston’s upcoming album.
 • Several reports have surfaced, that Spears could be in talks with George Maloof, owner of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas to perform a string of shows at the resort’s Pearl Theater. Spears and Maloof have been seen on multiple occasions having dinner business meetings, were thought to be making plans for the performances.
 • This last piece of news/rumor is definitely something I am interested in. Last May I dished over $100 to go see Britney perform 5 songs at the House of Blues in Los Angeles — I will definitely travel to Vegas to see her put on a proper performance at the Palms

I hope all this news is accurate, a new Britney album will be friggen KILLER. Blackout is STILL on heavy-ish rotation on my iPod. Here’s some remixes and rarities you might like:

Thom York vs Trent Reznor: Chi-Town Take Over

Radiohead vs Nine Inch Nails

Yesterday, Chicago Sun-Times blogger, Jim DeRogatis leaked the entire lineup for what looks like 2008’s best summer music festival, Lollapalooza. The first four artists on the roster get your blood pumping, but two in particular caught my attention. Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails.

Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have been taking turns giving the music industry the big finger. The Brits made headlines last October for releasing In Rainbows without the control support of a record label, and Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails followed suit with last month’s Ghosts I-IV.

The two bands have also been busy one-upping each other with their innovative promotion strategies. Life was happy having two brilliant bands continuously providing for innovative and buzzworthy ways to distribute digital media, simultaneously help digging record labels’ graves. That is, until Reznor accused Radiohead of ripping their fans off by selling them low-quality files.

Wired has come up with a 10 round face-off between the bands, and looking at the people’s votes, it seems Nine Inch Nails has got Radiohead beat in terms of innovation. Now we pose this question, who will take over Chi-Town this first week of August (Aug 1-3)?

The official lineup is found below
