Last night’s episode of Gossip Girl relied heavily (more than usual) on its music. It also featured plenty of low-key gems to keep you going until next week’s episode. One of the most impressive playlists on the series.

So I didn’t do a Music From Gossip Girl post last week because I didn’t really like last week’s episode nor its music selection. This week’s episode was a lot better, and Alex Pastavas threw in a tune by one of my favorite new (and broken-up
) bands, the Harlem Shakes. Last night’s episode also featured tunes by the ever-impressive Delta Spirit.
Make sure to read this week’s recap over at the delicious Daily Intel @ NY Mag, but before you do, check out this week’s Gossip Girl playlist.

Yeah, I know… I’m a day late on this, but I only watched this week’s episode last night. Musically, the episode was a winner. It included two of my favorite artists of 2009, indie rock’s cutest duo Matt & Kim and everyone’s French rockers, Phoenix. But what was more exciting was that Sonic Youth made a great cameo on Gossip Girl and not only played at, but MARRIED Lily and Rufus, thanks to a “shady internet service”. I say that is how you soundtrack good TV.

Gossip Girl’s music selection for its third season is finally getting interesting. Last night’s star-studded episode (insert: read NY Mag’s hilarious and inspired GG recaps every Tuesday morning), was the season’s most interesting, musically and otherwise.
As always, Gossip Girl played a handful of tracks by small bands you probably never heard of, but Alex Pastavas always keeps a goodie for the Gossip Girl’s closing monologue (which was awfully good last night).
Last week they closed with Miike Snow’s “Animal,” in a cutesy scene, and but this week they turned to Passion Pit’s “Moth’s Wings” in a plot-relevant scene. I’m more impressed by Pastavas’ decision to license “Moth’s Wings” (over other delectable Passion Pit cuts like “Little Secrets” or “The Reeling”) than the actual use of the track. Last night’s episode of Gossip Girl was my favorite so far of the season, but I was pretty slow on the musical side of things. That is not to say that the song choices were bad. On the contrary, actually. Last night’s episode included a really great cover of Hot Chip’s “Ready For The Floor” by Lissy Trullie, as well as one of my favorite tracks of 2009. Here was Episode 3’s full playlist:

Last night’s Gossip Girl was a bit sleepy. They played the same two songs quite a bit (one of them a nice Just Jack track that I wholly approve of, and another featuring Blair Waldorf herself). Despite showing some bias with Cobra Starship, Gossip Girl also paid tribute to one of the blogosphere’s favorite French rockers, Phoenix.
Other than that, the second episode was void of any other savvy music selections. A bit odd for Gossip Girl, but it’s been known to happen. Will the smooth, irresistible stylings of Phoenix be enough to call this episode a win?

We used to do this thing where Gossip Girl’s and Chuck’s episodic music selections would go head to head in a “showdown” and you, the beautiful readers, would vote for your favorite playlist. After Gossip Girl’s continual ass-kicking, I decided to move on from Chuck and onto the slightly hipper 90210. While being a bit more of a competitor, Gossip Girl still creamed 90210 in the polls. Instead of moving on to other music-savvy shows (i.e. Entourage, etc.), I think it’s time we just focused on the show that has had great music for over two seasons now.
Alex Pastavas, the music supervisor for Gossip Girl (as well as Grey’s Anatomy, Chuck, The OC, Mad Men, and Twilight) has done a great job on the show’s music and is keeping it up for the show’s third season, which premiered last night. The season premiere featured one of this year’s favorite new artists, Miike Snow, as well as the cute, indie-pop duo Matt & Kim. They also brought in fresh faces (to me anyway), Brakes with their catchy tune “Oh! Forever.” Here is Episode 1’s full playlist:
Here it is… the moment we’ve all been waiting for. The moment we get our Tuesday and Wednesday nights back! Ryan talks about the biggest moments of Adam and Kris’s lives, we talk about how crazy all of this is, and we talk about how THIS… is American Idol!! Continue reading →
Ameri-kizzy I-dizzy. Adam v. Kris with a K. This… is American Idol!
I can’t believe that we’re at the end of the road! We’re in the Nokia Theatre, which is substantially larger than the hovel we’re used to and Seacrest immediately starts drawing images of acoustic rocker v. glam rocker, Conway v. California, the guy next door v. guyliner (no! Guyliner is on LOST). We see the judges; Randy is wearing polka dots, stripes, plaid, and all other types of patterns. Kara looks nice, Paula looks like she’s been sleeping in a tanning booth, and Si actually dressed up for the occasion. We welcome the finalists, and here they are. Continue reading →
