Muse – United States of Eurasia / Collateral Damage

Muse United States of Eurasia / Collateral Damage listen
I’ve put off listening to this new Muse song, “United States of Eurasia” for a couple of reasons: one, I adore Muse. Really love ‘em. I love them so much that, I am scared of change. Change, I understand, is necessary in music — but nonetheless, I am scared. Two, there have been countless comparisons between Muse and Queen on “United States of Eurasia.” This is, as you know, both worrisome and exciting.

Normally, such comparisons are a great honor (no, actually, I’m sure Muse is thrilled; who doesn’t look up to Queen?), but at times, what should have been a subtle nod or tribute to a great band can easily become demanding and incongruous.

Listening to “United States of Eurasia,” I hear a front man who is worthy of being compared to the late, great Freddie Mercury. Being one of my personal heroes, I don’t say this often. In fact, I have only said this about two other persons, Killers front man, Brandon Flowers and American Idol finalist Adam Lambert (supposedly, Queen are thinking about having Lambert be their new leader singer… he’s got some pipes!). And Muse’s Matthew Bellamy seems like a better fit. Continue reading →

Up and Coming Emcees: On A Scale of 1-10

Here is an interesting article Confusion posted up on Pigeons and Planes grading Hip Hop’s “Freshman Class.” Big names on the list include: Wale, Kid Cudi, Drake, and Mickey Factz. Confusion, a bit more au courant in the Freshman Class than I am, also grades J.Cole, Frank Ramz (contributor to his blog), Charles Hamilton (chicks can kick his ass, I hear), B.o.B. (or Bobby Ray now? He just sounds like he’s Hannah Montana’s Dad now…), Fuze the MC, and Izza Kizza.

Good article all around, but I do feel some talent (or whatever) is missing from this list. Maybe Asher Roth, Wiz Khalifa among others. Maybe there’s room for some aggressive expansion.

PMA’s 2045th Post… or something

INTERESTING READS:

Idolator’s resident Hot 100 chart guru Chris Molanphy goes into incredible detail of why he suspects today’s major record labels are trying to bury the digital single. I love his weekly 100 and Single column on Idolator; his insight into the business is just captivating. Maybe I’m just a chart nerd. [100 and Single >> Idolator]

Pretty Much Amazing hooked up with Just Jace — a SICK DJ from Omaha, NE to create Gotta Love The BPM. In a sense the PMA Podcast is more like a series of mini DJ sets. Well I’m going to stop trying to sell this thing to you, so on to the first Pretty Much Amazing Podcast! Download away.

About A Milli ‘A Milli’ Remixes

Lil Wayne

Earlier, I ranked Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” as my second favorite song of 2008, so far. I, personally find Lil Wayne to be one of the best rappers alive — and not just because he’s always telling me so. I’ve had the “Weezy is the best rapper in the game right now” conversations dozens of times with many people and I found that it’s mostly the white guys who agree with me. White people think Lil Wayne is the best rapper alive – plain and simple (I know I’m not covering any uncharted ground here, this has been a fact of life for a very long time now). And why wouldn’t they? I may be engaging in a bit of satire here, but white people (who believe Lil Wayne is Hip Hop’s savior) love to think that they are into Intellectual shock rock music (see: Radiohead) because they themselves are intellectual and go around pretending they can understand what Thom Yorke is bellowing out because it makes them feel like the music they listen to everyday is making them a better person or is changing their life in one way or another. These same people pride themselves in listening to Lil Wayne, Kanye West, or Lupe Fiasco because they think they are separating themselves from the “ringtone rap” (see:T-Pain, Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop”) mold. It makes them feel smart to think that the rap they listen to is somehow revolutionary.

But you know what? I think “A Milli” is just plain amazing. The best rap song I’ve heard in a very long time.

The song alone is a great, almost dizzying banger, but it also seems to be the richest remix gold since MGMT’s “Time To Pretend”. Pardon the crappy pun, but there are literally A Milli ‘A Milli’ remixes! Some are just good and others are ridiculously great!

Lil Wayne – A Milli (Chewy Chocolate Cookies Remix)
Lil Wayne vs Cryponites – Can’t Give You A Milli (Starters Remix)
Lil Wayne – A Mili (Dubbel Dutch remix)
Lil Wayne – A Milli (Scottie B I’m Ill Remix)
Lil Wayne – A Milli (Nadastrom Remix)
Lil Wayne – A Milli (My!Gay!Husband! Remix)

Flobots – Handlebars (DJ Doc Rok Remix)

Flobots

We’ve talked about Flobots before, right? Everyone seems to like them enough — everyone digs a nice catchy message song like “Handlebars.”

Just as “Handlebars” seems to be overshadowed by music that seems more appropriate for the summer heat, soon-to-be PMA fave Dj Doc Rok transforms “Handlebars” into a club-ready banger. Grab it below Continue reading →
