Rihanna – Wait Your Turn (Wait Is Ova)

I’ve had about a week or so to let the shock of “Russian Roulette” to settle, and you know what? I bought it on iTunes just yesterday. Why the sudden change of heart? Letting go of dreams of more Umbrella’s and Disturbia’s, I listened to this new side of Rihanna. Muumuse coins it best, “Rihan-noir.”

Rihan-noir sounds exactly how you imaged it would. It’s dark, moody, dramatic and a lot more fierce than Beyonce’s last album. In a sense, Rated R is going to be Rihanna’s 808s and Heartbreak. I’m officially on board.

VV Brown – Crazy In Love (Beyonce Cover), PMA Premiere

YouTube Preview Image

VV Brown transforms Beyonce’s Pitchfork-adored “Crazy In Love” into a pumped-up, folksy flurry of energy. It’s the latest track in her series of live covers. Past covers include Kid Cudi’s “Day N Nite” and Drake’s “Best I’ve Ever Had.” Her frantic rendition of “Crazy In Love” is easily the best of the bunch and has a killer chance of becoming my favorite cover of the year.

Make sure to check out VV Brown’s latest release, The Attic EP on iTunes. You can now download VV Brown’s “Crazy In Love” cover on MP3! Continue reading →

St. Vincent – Marrow

The video for St. Vincent’s “Marrow” is one of the great instances when a music video adds to the listener’s appreciation for every moment of a song. The beautiful contrast of Annie Clark’s soft and sensitive yet eerie and bizarre verses with her energetic chorus is displayed perfectly in this music video.

After watching, it will be hard not to picture the middle class family, construction workers, crazy teenagers, and cops jolting back and forth during the chorus. Annie’s control over her followers during the video perfectly shows her grasp of any listener on her wonderful album Actor.

La Roux- I’m Not Your Toy (Music Video)

YouTube Preview Image

This old news to some of you, but we’re finally coming around to “I’m Not Your Toy” being La Roux’s new single (we prefer “Tigerlilly,” thanks). The words in La Roux’s latest single “I’m Not Your Toy” seem fitting for its futuristic Great Gasby like video. Continue reading →

HEALTH – Die Slow (Music Video)

http://www.vimeo.com/6407654

“You don’t need to be 19 to like a band like this. You don’t need to listen to music eight hours a day. You don’t need to narcissistic or shallow. All you need to do is call.” HEALTH end their half fun and trippy half blood plagued music video for “Die Slow” with this message. Then they give a phone number to call and a website to visit.

I have not partaken in the viral advertising enough to check out the phone number, but the website repeats the message at the bottom of the page: “You Will Love Each Other.”

While watching the music video for “Die Slow”, you may be tempted to overanalyze some artsy message out of it. Instead HEALTH is saying that we all need to calm down and just embrace their accessible music, and the music is extremely accessible. “Die Slow” is a fantastic, upbeat, and fun song and the energy in the video only adds to it. Once you get hooked on the song, go get their new LP Get Color which dropped yesterday.

The Juan Maclean – Happy House (Music Video)

Addictive looping keyboard beat? Mid-tempo dance groove? Nonchalant confident delivery? And a video launching the singer into space? Sounds like DFA has another hit on their hands with the Juan Maclean’s “Happy House”.

In the closing song on their second LP The Future Will Come John Maclean brings a great beat and head-bob ensuing keyboard work to Nancy Whang’s serenading voice for twelve minutes of fun.

The video consists of Whang and backups dancing in white with lights shining all over. The best part though is when Whang commands “Launch me into space” and the colors in the video are flipped.

If you can’t quite spend 12 minutes of fun with the Juan Maclean, the video and radio edits are still definitely worth the listen. However the build up and the space section which the radio edit cuts out are very entertaining.

The Antlers – Two (Music Video)

The Antlers Two (Music Video) listen

When the guitar strums start on “Two” and Peter Silberman sings about how he was sleeping sitting up I almost hear Conor Oberst wishing he only had one desire; almost but not for long.

Although reminiscent of Bright Eyes’ “A Perfect Sonnet”, The Antlers have created a wonderful song and video that speak for hope. The beauty of the song comes not only from the lyrics but especially the music which is clear in the video. Continue reading →

Harlem Shakes – Strictly Game, Music Video / Y Control (Yeah Yeah Yeahs Cover)

YouTube Preview Image
What a concept for a video. I’m really impressed by the creativity and originality. The second time around you watch it it’s even cooler. A concept so simple, yet (correct me if I’m wrong) never really been done before. Badass.

Also, Harlem Shakes’ keyboardist, Kendrick Strauch, got his Karen O on and covered the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Y Control” from their critically acclaimed debut, Fever To Tell. The cover is simple, dreamy and smooth. Towards the end, Strauch’s “Y Control” turns into a shimmery, disco-flavored ballad. All the polish doesn’t ever reach the heights Karen O and the YYYs take “Y Control” to. But can anyone? Probably not.
