Caribou “Odessa”

Caribou Odessa favorite songs
“Odessa,” the first single from Caribou’s upcoming LP Swim, is sexy. “Elctropop” and “disco” are often used in the description of the song, and, indeed, “Odessa” is more reminiscent of bands like Hot Chip or Hercules and Love Affair than Caribou’s previous material. A prominent bassline, a little house vibe that would make the good people of Jersey Shore proud, tender vocals, production tricks – all wrapped up into one synthy, eighties-y package. “Odessa” sounds like it is emerging from a dark place, coming to smoke a cigarette out on the street in the rain. It would have to be summertime, it would have to be sweaty, there would have to be a flickering streetlight somewhere.

Like Hot Chip and Hercules and Love Affair, Caribou’s new disco bent doesn’t focus on that hot club ecstasy so much as a weird, strangely melancholy sensuality. Added to the video – a woman stumbling and driving through fog, smoke, and ghostly, disconnected memories – “Odessa” tells a strange, captivating story of love, loss, and escape. And it works like a charm.

You can download “Odessa” below, and catch the music video after the jump:

Vampire Weekend “Giving Up The Gun” Video w/ Jake Gyllenhaal, Joe Jonas, RZA, Lil Jon

And here it is, Vampire Weekend’s star-studded music video for Contra fan favorite (and my least favorite) “Giving Up The Gun”. Oh and you know cocky, drunk Tennis Superstar Jake Gyllenhaal makes this the best music video of 2010.

Passion Pit “Little Secrets” Music Video

Guess now that “Little Secrets” is a bona fide alternative radio hit, it needs an update in music video wares. Seriously, this trend where 2009’s greatest songs are seeing the music video treatment in 2010 is about as stupid as it sounds, though it does make me feel some kind of nostalgic, but it’s way too early for that.

Chiddy Bang’s “Opposite of Adults” (also known as “Kids”), the MGMT-sampling, career-launching summer scorcher from The Swelly Express, is finally getting a proper release, and with some justice, Chiddy Bang will see the commercial success they deserve.

Chiddy Bang is hitting up the UK first (you lucky bastards) with the Opposite of Adults EP, which is out on February 22nd. The Antlers “Bear” Music Video

It’s hard to believe that “Bear”, one of the best songs released last year, is just getting the music video treatment now. I guess it’s time to admit that the music video is dead and that it does not sell records the way “Thriller” used to. That doesn’t make the music video for “Bear” any less gorgeous. If you haven’t bought Hospice yet, maybe you should do so now.

Jónsi “Go Do”

Jónsi Go Do favorite songs

Sigur Rós frontman, Jónsi, will be releasing his solo album, Go later this spring. If you recall, back in December, Jónsi gave away the gorgeous first single from Go, “Boy Lilikoi“, which you can still download if you follow that link.

The sunny and lively musical arrangements on Go are credited to Nico Muhly, who worked with Grizzly Bear on the gorgeous arrangements on Veckatimest; he is also responsible for the arrangements on Antony & The Johnsons’  The Crying Light. Jónsi and Nico’s brainchildren are a dream to listen to. “Go Do”, the latest one to sprout out, is cacophony of banging drums and other rattling percussion that is being lifted by the light and subtle beauty of a flute; it epitomizes the coming of Spring. So then it makes perfect sense that Jónsi will be releasing a Go Do EP on March 15th, a month prior to Go’s release. I really can’t think of a better way to usher in spring.

UPDATE: There is now a (super fantastic) music video!
