American Idol Recap: Season 8, Season Finale (pt 1)

Ameri-kizzy I-dizzy. Adam v. Kris with a K. This… is American Idol!

I can’t believe that we’re at the end of the road! We’re in the Nokia Theatre, which is substantially larger than the hovel we’re used to and Seacrest immediately starts drawing images of acoustic rocker v. glam rocker, Conway v. California, the guy next door v. guyliner (no! Guyliner is on LOST). We see the judges; Randy is wearing polka dots, stripes, plaid, and all other types of patterns. Kara looks nice, Paula looks like she’s been sleeping in a tanning booth, and Si actually dressed up for the occasion. We welcome the finalists, and here they are. Continue reading →

American Idol Recap: Season 8, Top 7

American Idol Recap: Season 8, Top 7 live music

Here we are. Same beginning, same Seacrest. Sounds like we’re doing “Music From the Movies” and Quentin Tarantino is our guest judge (he even says, “This… is American Idol).” How bad do I hope that somebody gets up there and whistles that haunting nurse whistle from Kill Bill Vol.1?  Continue reading →

American Idol Recap: Season 8, Top 8

American Idol Recap: Season 8, Top 8 live music

Okay, we’re opening just like we open every week. Ryan is telling us how the fate of the world is resting squarely on our shoulders, we pan the stoic faces of the final 8 contestants, and “THIS…. Is American Idol.”

Ryan talks about the jam-packed week we have before us (tonight’s show is only an hour long… thank goodness) and tells us our theme: “Songs that were popular the year you were born.” Hooray! Continue reading →

American Idol Recap: Season 8, Top 9

American Idol Recap: Season 8, Top 9 live music

Welcome back Idol fans. We’re down to the bottom 9, and right on cue, Ryan begins his introductory speech. As he speaks, the camera pans across the contestants and we’re treated to Scott’s hair who is doing what his pink pants did last week: Make him look insane. Allison looks like she and Scott started sharing hair people and her hair is doing its best Flock of Seagulls impression. Anoop has this crazy chain thing wrapping down his arm through a lapel on his shoulder, and I’m trying to figure out if that’s his rosary or maybe his wallet is attached. Anyway, the judges are announced, walk through the giant gate in the front of the stage (Paula is not wearing a tutu tonight, but she is still wearing a pink cocktail dress that looks like it was made for a 16 year old. Here we go! We’re on to the final 9! Continue reading →

American Idol Recap: Season 8, Top 10

American Idol Recap: Season 8, Top 10 live performances

Alright Idol fans. It’s that time of the week. President Obama may have harshed the A.I. flow last night, but we’re ready to go tonight. This… is American Idol Recap (think of it the way Ryan says it).

The idols are lined up and there are all sorts of backlights shining. Ryan tells us that these guys are the most talked about singers in the nation, but that may be a little hyperbolic for my taste. Either way, we’re introduced and on our way. Thanks Seacrest!

The judges come out from behind the stage, and… WHAT IS PAULA WEARING? It’s 50% prom dress, 50% tutu, 100% strange. No wonder she loves Adam so much (they shop in the same stores). Conversely, Randy looks like he opened his closet, picked his favorite sweater, and was ready to roll. Continue reading →

The Thinking Man’s Take On: Album Of The Year 2009 Showdown, II

The Thinking Mans Take On: Album Of The Year 2009 Showdown, II albumreviewsI want to say off the bat that I think Ed Droste, lead singer of Grizzly Bear, is a classy gent. When Grizzly Bear’s third studio release, Veckatimest, leaked at the beginning of this month (nearly 3 months before the album’s May 26th release date) he had this to say…er…Tweet: “So yeah, it leaked. I’m happy people are loving it. Makes me smile! Just remember it’s not a top notch sonic example. So keep that in mind.” What a stud. He followed that up with a very human confession, “I’m trying to be zen about the album leaking because I’m “ok” with it, but I’m bummed. And apparently it’s [a] low quality rip. :( So now everyone will be judging it off of a crappy rip. Sigh…. Was hoping to make it to at least april! I’m cool with it just….so early!”

Indeed, my reservations in reviewing the album lie in just those realms – it’s a low quality rip and it’s super early. It’s a bit like Picasso painting a masterpiece for your birthday, except that someone ran into his studio, took a picture of the canvas with their cellphone, and emailed it to you 3 months ahead of time. It’s cool, it gets you excited for the real deal, but it also feels like it cheapens the experience a bit.

But, after some thought (and – full disclosure – some listens) I decided to go ahead and review the album. Continue reading →

Old People Hate Animal Collective, Beirut, Indie Rock In General

These videos have circulated the net over the past couple of days, and they are truly hilarious. Three elderly folks sit in a diner every Sunday and check out 2-3 tracks, typically of the Indie Rock or Rap genre. They’ve now infamously bashed “My Girls,” “My Night With The Prostitute From Marseille,” “In The New Year,” and other great songs. Watching their facial reactions, their groaning about the build-ups and repetition, and their slightly off-color remarks makes for a great viewing experience. Check out one of the videos below, the one with “My Girls” (and a Young Jeezy listen as well). Then check out the other videos at this website. Enjoy.

Little Boots – Day N Nite (Kid Cudi Cover)

As Pigeons And Planes pondered when they posted this yesterday, how is this not all over the internet? Regardless, Little Boots has an excellent, piano-based cover of Kid Cudi’s hit, “Day ‘N’ Nite” up on Youtube. Check it out right here at PMA.

Lil’ Wayne’s “Prom Queen” Music Video: Whoops!

Yikes:

YouTube Preview Image

So this rock album is actually happening? Lil’ Wayne wasn’t just trying to play a brilliant prank on us?

What a terrible video. You know what: I shut it off midway not because of the video itself, but because I couldn’t take the song anymore. And I didn’t feel like muting my computer just to watch Weezy look at a girl’s underwear and run around with a guitar. So goodbye, “Prom Queen” video. I hope I never see you again.

Is this move to rock n’ roll as bad as I think it is for Weezy, or should we cut the guy some slack? Thanks to Videogum for the tip.
