Florence and The Machine – Girl With One Eye

Florence and The Machine Girl With One Eye listen
I’ve spent the better part of the last 12 hours listening to Florence and the Machine’s full-length debut album, Lungs. The album is a tour de force that matches the releases of her soulful British peers Amy, Adele, and Duffy.

With the Ting Tings’ “That’s Not My Name” climbing American radio charts week after week, and Florence and the Machine’s cool indie vibe, and commercial appeal on the rise, don’t expect the Female British Invasion to stop anytime soon.

“Girl With One Eye” is an unapologetically big pop number packed with silky, raw, soulful blues without losing an ounce of charm. Listen to “Girl With One Eye” here Continue reading →

Daniel Merriweather – Love & War Album Review

Daniel Merriweather Love & War Album Review album reviews reviews 2
[rating:79/100]

While Daniel Merriweather may not be a household name right now, it’s only a matter of time. Since his collaboration with Mark Ronson on “Stop Me”, his musical career has progressed in leaps and bounds, taking him far from his native Australia, and is likely to take off in a big way any day now. Merriweather is the latest bright young thing to tag onto the retro revival spearheaded by Amy Winehouse et al, and his debut album, Love & War, is an estimable showcase of his refreshingly down-to-earth talent. Daniel Merriweather and Adele – Water And A Flame

Daniel Merriweather and Adele Water And A Flame listen
[rating:84/100]
Ladies and gentlemen, here are your new voices in soul music.

Daniel Merriweather blew us all away with his single “Chainsaw” off of his upcoming album, and now PMA presents you with another stellar track; this one more beautiful than funky. Adele’s voice compliments his gorgeously, as the two sing back-and-forth, calling, responding, and duetting on the climactic chorus.

Starting with nothing more than shushed choir “ooo-s,” “Water And A Flame” grows into a haunting ballad, with an exceptional melody, fantastic strings and instrumentals in the background, and two of modern soul’s best voices singing together. Just over halfway through the song, Merriweather and Adele trade off verses, each trying to top the last with a higher note or a more prominent raspy vocal- and it works to stunning effect.

This is straight off of Merriweather’s upcoming album Love And War, which could prove to be one of 2009’s best if the first few singles are any indication.

Take a listen for yourself. Continue reading →

New Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow

New Black Eyed Peas Boom Boom Pow listen

Oh, I’m back everybody. :)

Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow

“Boom Boom Pow” sounds exactly like you think it would. It’s ridiculous, fun music delivered in a fashion only will.i.am, Fergie and the gang could. It looks like 2009 will be just as vocoder-filled as 2008 was. It’s sort of ironic how the BEPs are talkin’ about the future of music and dropping beats and effects that have been working since 2005. Let’s throw the question of originality out for a second (this is the Black Eyed Peas we’re talking about here…) and just enjoy the song. You know you like the beat they drop halfway into the song. pmaCAST #7: The “Valentine’s Day 2009″ Episode

pmaCAST #7: The Valentines Day 2009 Episode mp3

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! You know I had to join in on the cheese and pull this week’s pmaCAST early with a Valentine’s Day-themed episode!  Hopefully some of you enjoy it enough to listen to it with someone special tonight. Just maybe.

Because I assume that 99.9% of the movie-going population will be watching some sort of chick flick (I’m not ashamed to admit that I liked He’s Just No That Into You, and will probably watch Confessions of a Shopoholic tonight), I wanted to structure this playlist like 99.9% of the chick flicks out there. So I’ve come up with a story that I hope would play out well in songs. Or maybe you want to see this as a hopeful soundtrack to some V-Day movie coming out in 2010. Either way, here it is…

Katy Perry – Black and Gold (Sam Sparro cover)

Katy Perry Black and Gold (Sam Sparro cover) covers

this dashing young man is Sam Sparro. the end.

Here’s a great little cover Katy Perry did for a new love song covers compilation for Valentines Day, Sweethearts 2009. Katy Perry covered Sam Sparro’s epic, GRAMMY nominated “Black and Gold,” — and once again — she did a terrific job!

Katy Perry is no stranger from covering beloved indie-dance tracks and transforming them to great, great acoustic wonders. Disagree with me like you will, but I still think Katy’s cover of MGMT’s “Electric Feel” was fantastic. You can’t deny that this girl can sing, even if she sings about kissing girls — which isn’t necessarily a band thing anyway.

Just like Lady GaGa, I really want to her an album full of tracks just like these. Better yet, maybe an acoustic Lady GaGa/Katy Perry collaboration album. Hmm. While I daydream about popstars with actual singing ability picking up a guitar/getting on the keys while singing, you go listen to this cover: Continue reading →

Mick Boogie Presents… Adele: 1988

Mick Boogie Presents... Adele: 1988 mp3

Just as Mick Boogie and friends are finished riding off the hype around Viva La Hova, Big Mick locked onto the four-time GRAMMY nominated, revered songbird Adele and her wonderful debut 19. I don’t know what goes on in that head of his, but he somehow came up with the idea that putting this soulful album to late-80’s hip-hop beats was going to work.

Probably what’s more surprising is that it does work. It works brilliantly.

If you’re unfamiliar with Adele’s music, think Amy Winehouse minus the drugs and paparazzi, and maybe add a little bit of a Rachel Yamagata/A Fine Frenzy vibe. Obviously, bringing Adele’s 19 to 1988 would be no easy feat. But somehow the Mick Boogie team came up with this masterpiece.
