Jay-Z – Empire State of Mind (ft. Alicia Keys)

Jay Z Empire State of Mind (ft. Alicia Keys) listen

The earth stood still for a couple of minutes when word broke that Jay-Z’s insanely anticipated The Blueprint 3 had leaked. The consensus was that after all of these years, Jay-Z is still hitting hard and four steps ahead of everyone in the game. Most rappers lose steam after their second or third album — to release an eleventh album that doesn’t make you want to shoot yourself in the face, like this one, is unthinkable.

With that said, for me, the album was dry and slow. It had some highlights and “Empire State of Mind” was definitely one of them. My personal favorite cut from the album, the track features a Jay-Z full of hometown sentiment and soaring harmonies courtesy of the gosh-wow lovely Alicia Keys. Listen to it here:  Continue reading →

Alicia Keys – Human Nature (Michael Jackson Tribute)

Alicia Keys Human Nature (Michael Jackson Tribute) covers
Yesterday news of the passing of the King of Pop came flooding through the newsfeeds. In a world full of people of different colors, languages, ideas, and ideals, we are united in a state of mourning and remembrance of this undeniable icon. Not only was Michael Jackson a pioneer and a legend in music, but a beloved humanitarian that taught the world to come together. United we were in his prime, and united we are now.

In recent years, many of our favorite musicians have paid tribute to the King of Pop with covers. Some covers are more famous than others, and I don’t think I’ve seen Alicia Keys’ rendition of “Human Nature” make the rounds much, so here it is in its orchestral glory. Continue reading →

New Alicia Keys and Jack White – Another Way To Die

New Alicia Keys and Jack White Another Way To Die listen
I can honestly say the whole world was excited when news of this monster collaboration hit. I can’t even imagine what musically induced euphoric state Alicia Keys and White Stripes/Raconteurs fans are in right now. Alicia Keys and Jack White gives the new Jame Bond movie, Quantum of Solace a delicious bluesy rock theme with “Another Way To Die” — and it completely shatters Chris Cornell’s theme for Casino Royal. I do have to admit, Madonna’s “Die Another Day” was pretty damn fantastic. These two might be my favorite James Bond themes ever.

New MP3s: Ludacris, Alicia Keys Remix; New Roots (Again)

Ludacris
1. Ludacris, Ultimate Satisfaction (Cabin Bwoy remix) MP3 | AUDIO
Ludacris’s “Ultimate Satisfaction” gets even more ultimate (or at least druggier) with a sample from Underworld’s “Born Slippy,” made famous by the classic heroin comedy Trainspotting.

2. Alicia Keys – Like You’ll Never See Me Again (Jony Rockstar Remix) MP3 | AUDIO
Here’s my favorite song off of As I Am given a little upbeat(ish) twist. It’s clean, cut and refreshing. I’ve been getting tired of the grime. Nice change.

3. The Roots feat. Mos Def, Styles P & Dice Raw – Rising Down (Hum Drum) MP3 | AUDIO
Damn, a third straight cut from The Roots’ upcoming Rising Down in stores April 29th. This one might be my favorite. Though “Birthday Girl” was quite a number.

4. Bloc Party vs. Ting Tings – Thats Not My Flux (Sunderland Mash) MP3 | AUDIO
Here’s a semi-new Bloc Party and Ting Tings mashup by DJ Sunderland. Its a pretty decent mashup, one of the best I’ve heard in a while. But nothing revolutionary. But enjoy anyway.

Cover Tuesday 14: Justice Gone Acoustic Beck, Adele mp3

Unless you can pull an awesome cover off!

(This was supposed to be up on Tuesday, but well… you know)

My brain doesn’t want to cooperate with me at the moment, so I decided to wiki Tuesday and post up the first paragraph.

“Tuesday is the day of the week between Monday and Wednesday. The name comes from Middle English Twisday, from Old English Tiwes dæg, named after the Nordic god Tyr, who was the equivalent of the Roman war god Mars, and Greek god Ares.”

Thrilling. But really, here are some interesting finds of the day.

YouTube Probes Into ‘Music is My Hot Hot Sex’ Music Video
YouTube is looking into the music video from Brazilian pop group Cansei de Ser Sexy’s ‘My Hot, Hot Sex’ which as of this submission has racked up 89,750,739 views making it the most popular video ever! Problem is, far fewer viewers are leaving a recommendation after watching it, implying use of an automated, non-human method to inflate the clicks.

Mashups You Shouldn’t Live Without!

Mashups You Shouldnt Live Without! mp3

Well hello there my lovelies. I feel kind of blurgh getting out of bed today (though it’s well into the afternoon). Gotta love those lazy days. I need to down some Cinnamon Dolce Latte from down the street before I try to dent this massive paper I have due in oh, 3 hours.
Before I hit my responsibilities, I need some relax time. Out of habit, mostly, I automatically opened up iTunes. I was in the mood for some mashups. Here’s a collection of a few that will make your lives a lot more enjoyable.

Mixer master Icky lays it smooth with Ms. Alicia Keys, Biggie Smalls, Marvin Gaye, and to top it off our favorite beehive yielding whack-off, Amy Winehouse.

Listen to Alicia Keys vs Biggie Smalls vs Marvin Gaye vs Amy Winehouse – No Tears Dry On Their Own (YSI)

The next mashup is one of the best of the year, if not of this century. Parisian DJ Moule proves he deserves the status given to Mark Ronson, and Justice with his star-studded gem.

Listen to CSS vs Velvet Underground vs LCD Soundsystem vs Chemical Brothers – Can’t Stand Dance (YSI)

Is everyone ready for Alive 2007? It’s out in early December. In honor if Daft Punk’s nonstop sonic high, LA’s own DJ Shyboy mashes the duo up with pop’s biggest star, at the moment, Justin Timberlake. Woo hoo.

Listen to Daft Punk vs Justin Timberlake – What Goes Around The World (YSI)

To be honest, I haven’t seen or heard a better all-female mashup like the captivating track taken from Wax Audio’s Mashopolis collection.

Listen to Tori Amos vs Bjork vs PJ Harvey vs Massive Attack – Dissolved By The Water All These Years (YSI)

This next one gives me goosebumps! Such a perfect ambient cut ready for the creeping winter. Arty Fufkin gorgeously offers this tribute to France’s Air, with chilling vocals from the ever-surprising Lily Allen.

Listen to Air vs Lily Allen – All I Need’s A Smile (YSI)

To wrap things up, lets mix the indie rock sounds of PrettyMuchAmazing!’s band of the moment, Bloc Party with the scintillating Fergie. Bloc Party’s most vital track, “Banquet” is a mixer’s dream, it sounds heavenly with just about anything smeared over it, under it, beside it… you get it, right? It is most interesting to hear Fergie’s whiny ‘Fergalicious’ spread over Bloc Party’s undeniably catchy, edgy dance-riffs and slick drums. Courtesy of DJ Schmolli.

Lets Digest Some Top 40 Radio

Lets Digest Some Top 40 Radio mp3

Its about time we digest some pop radio. Let the hip-hop ringtone, err, song slaughter begin! No, but this is where I try to convince you Top 40 radio ain’t so bad.

The Top 20 has officially bored me, a guy can only take so much of Fergie, Timbaland, and Rihanna. I was certain these tired acts would disappear now that the summer’s over and the REAL music surfaced. I guess I was wrong. One of the only songs that still has me reaching for the volume dial is Maroon 5’s unbelievably catchy “Wake Up Call” sitting neatly at No. 10 between “Crank That” and “Ayo Technology”, naturally.

But in the obscure depths of the list hide some truly marvelous songs. At No. 24, Alicia Keys pledges her indefinite love for a nameless partner over thumping percussion on “No One”. A few spots down, Hollywood Records’ next Plain White T’s the Jonas Brothers crooning over high school heartbreak in the sleek, healthy, teen tune “SOS”. At No. 29, Justin Timberlake enlists Beyonce to help him grab his, count ‘em, sixth Top 40 single, and one of my favorite slow jams of 2007, “Until The End of Time”. And finally to sum up this most polished cut from modern radio, Santana’s new classic “Into The Night”, sung by Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger.

Album Review: Alicia Keys – As I Am

Album Review: Alicia Keys As I Am mp3

86%

From the moment Alicia Keys dropped onto the music scene in 2001, one thing was clear, the girl could write a killer hook. With a few simple words stretched out to blasting piano underscored intensity, “I keep on fallin, in and out of love with you,” Alicia Keys roared onto radio with an album (“Songs in A Minor”) that would garner her both critical praise and a slew of awards. It also seems to be the only real lyrical idea she will ever write, but that’s not as bad as it sounds.

With 2004’s follow up “The Diary of Alicia Keys,” we saw the singer amp up her game enlisting some of the hottest producers to bring her musical vision to life. A prodigious piano player, all the songs acted as a showcase for her searing, raw vocals, and roaming hands.
With so much time spent at the piano, it seems like Key’s has been able to experience little other than love, as is evidenced in the thirty (roughly) songs she has written to date.

Next week brings the release of her eagerly anticipated album “As I Am,” and it’s both strikingly different than her past two albums and strikingly similar. Those seeking out more of Keys’ piano driven ballads about heartbreak, newfound love, and euphoric romance will be pleased to know that Keys has delivered fourteen songs with her signature killer hooks that seem radio friendly and original at the same time.

Fortunately, for her slightly repetitive songwriting skills, Keys is blessed with one of the best voices in the pop/R&B world. Anyone who has heard the incredible first single, “No One,” where Keys practically screams her devotion to a man that will never be matched, you realize that even when she’s pushing the limits of her vocal range (which she is doing to beautiful effect in this single) she’s fully in command.

What makes her music accessible is the simple stream of emotions that she writes with. Her choruses often consist of a string of three or four words, repeated with different notes and they send shivers through your body. It doesn’t seem to matter that she employs slews of clichés because the way she performs them is breathtaking and she fully commits. This is most true on “Sure Looks Good To Me” which finds her singing with defiance, “Don’t rain on my parade.” There’s nothing lyrically original in this statement, but through some magic she makes it feel like you are hearing it for the first time.

At other places on the CD, she is more lyrically successful. The absolutely stellar “Lesson Learned,” about a tumultuous relationship which she finally put an end to, is an incredible collaboration between her and fellow singer/songwriter John Mayer. He croons “It’s
alright, it’s alright, it’s alright,” over slamming drums while Keys laments that “yes, I was burned, but I called it a lesson learned.” It’s a slow building explosion of a song that evokes a
soulful feeling of some of Keys’ influences. At its most scorching moment Keys wails out that “You don’t know what the struggles for/ Falling down ain’t falling down if you don’t cry when you hit the floor/ It’s called a past/ because I’m getting past/ and I ain’t nothing like I was before/ You oughtta see me now.”

Of course this song is sandwiched between the songs “I Need You,” and “Wreckless Love,” which seem to be the antithesis to “Lesson Learned.” It’s all about love with Keys but this time the key (pun not intended but I’ll take it) difference is the production of the album. On “Diary,” the only drum driven song was the Timbaland produced “Heartburn” but this album finds pulsing and invigorating drums pounding throughout.

Even though I would love to see Keys branch out into uncharted territory with her subject matter, there’s no denying that what she does, she does well. Clichéd? At times, yes. Enjoyable? Always. Pick up her album when it hits stores next Tuesday. Review by Matthew Murphy

Its The 2007 VMAS, Bitch!

Its The 2007 VMAS, Bitch! music videos

I am sure most of you tuned in last night for MTV’s 2007 VMAS. If you didn’t you probably read the live blogging marathon a few blogs had going on. If you didn’t do that… well you didn’t miss much anyway. To catch a glimpse of the winners turn your pretty little heads over here. One of the coolest things about last night was that almost every single performance was horrible, but none stooped lower than Miss Britney “Trailer Trash” Spears, but more on that later. Thanks to a few helpful hands (thanks for the email Kevin, Rob, and Sammie) Pretty Much Amazing has compiled the Best and Worst Performances of last night’s VMA’s.
