Pretty Much Amazing Nominated for Best Music Blog (Vote!)

The 2007 Weblog Awards

Pretty Much Amazing is a finalist in the 2007 Weblog Awards and is nominated in the Best Music Blog category. This is really exciting and pretty damn cool. Its a great honor to be considered one of the best music blogs, especially with the likes of Fluxblog, I Guess I’m Floating, and Stereogum. Please vote for PMA here. Thanks!

Hey guys, its time for a PMA Reader’s Survey. Its high time I update PMA’s demographic information for advertisers, and I’m kind of curious as to how the readership has changed since May. There will be a series of polls, so please try to fill out each one. Thanks.

Me Tarzan, You Jane

Me Tarzan

Hollaa!

Hello PMA readers, I wanted to introduce myself: I’m Emily and I will be contributing to PMA along with the other magical musical tour guide Luis.

Just to give you an idea of the type of music you can expect from me, a taste of what pumps through my speakers:

Retro.. music like your grandma likes it.. but with a good bass beat:

Shirley bassey – Where Do I Begin (Remix): 86%

Same chica who was on Kanye’s Diamonds track… recognize?

Joss Stone

Raw, edgy female voices… on the verge of masculinity

Joss stone – Girl They Won’t Believe It: 95%

From Joss’ album “Introducing Joss Stone” earlier this year, I absolutely love this track. At just 20, this soulful songstress has lasting vocal power!

Mash-ups.. you take one song, and then you take another song.. and then you beat the shit out of them and smash them together.

DJ TT – Aaliyah vs. Onj: 89%

http://www.tbrn.net/djtt/Dj%20TT%20-%20Wanted%20Romio%20Rocks%20the%20Boat%20(Onj%20vs%20Aaliyah%20vs%20bassment%20jax).mp3" wmode="transparent" quality="high" class="audio" name="audio3" src="http://prettymuchamazing.com/wp-content/plugins/ws-audio-player/audioplayer.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"/>

Covers

Covers are really a love/hate thing.. because I truly find cover attempts to be special. Sometimes special ed, but in the rare occasion that the cover is better the original, sparkly special. Although they don’t present any new material in particular, it’s always interesting to me to see artists interpret old material in different ways.

Marie Digby – Umbrella Cover: 89%

Ashlee Simpson does “Sweet Dreams” YouTube Preview Image
I saw Ashlee perform this version of Sweet Dreams are Made of This live and I have to admit, I was surprised at how compelling her cover of the Eurythmics’s classic 80s song was (and that she could sing at all.. haha).

Happy Songs

magnet

Magnet – Lonely No More: 93%

Sweet sweet pop. I love Magnet’s almost Caribbean like beats.. mades me want to kick back with a icy, mango margarita on a white sandy beach… an aural oasis in the concrete jungle.

Well, readers, that’s the end for now, but I will continue to serenade you with sweet ballads like Andy Samberg’s heart-warming ode to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad:

You belong to me / Like a very hairy Jake Gyllenhaal to me..
And I ran….

Pretty Much Amazing’s New Rating Guide

I don’t know if its my need to feel important, or what, but I decided PMA should have a rating guide for mp3s and albums. I’m not trying to bust a Pitchfork or anything like that — but it just gives the mp3s I share some credibility, and it gives me something to do. Below are the ratings from a 0-100% scale. NOTE: I wont rate older mp3s only new mp3s!

DON’T EVEN BOTHER:
0-19%: Turn it off! Turn it off!
20-29%: God-Awful
30-39%: Bad
40-49%: Getting There

BE WARNED:
50-54%: Ok
55-59%: I can dig it
60-64%: I dig it

TRY IT:
65-69%: Pretty Good
70-74%: Very Good
75-79%: Play It Again!

BUY IT:
80-84%: Worth the Hard Drive Space
85- 89%: Worth iPod Space
90-95%: Amazing – Year’s Best!
96-100%: AMAZING! – All Time Best!

PMA Looking For One (1) Pop Writer!

PMA Looking For One (1) Pop Writer! mp3Hey there nifty readers!

I am in dire need of a pop writer! I can’t possible keep this up alone much longer, especially with school, work, and life things getting in the way. Sometimes I wish I had more hours in the day, I love blogging.

But I digress… as I was saying, I would love the assistance of one, ONE, O-N-E, 1 pop writer. Requirements? Well I think it would be AWESOME if you had dome something like this before, even better — if have your own blog but wish to contribute to PMA. I’d love that. Other than that, you must love music and pop culture. If you think you’re right for the job drop a line here. Just tell me a little about yourself, I’m looking for personality not journalistic genius. Please get back to me soon, desperate is my middle name.

mp3: Hard-Fi – Help Me Please

mp3: Toxic Reasons – Somebody Help Me

Note From The Editor

Note From The Editor uncategorized

Hello all, thanks for being so loyal and for coming back to Pretty Much Amazing for thepast couple months. Thank you for all your comments and emails, I enjoy them a lot.I am here on a serious note though. I am extremely embarrassed to say that I have been a careless ‘editor’. As many of you know, contributions are always welcome here at PMA. And I thank you again for all the tips and links you guys send me almost daily. But I am sorry to announce that I will no longer accept full story contributions from anyone unless you are a staff member of Pretty Much Amazing. It has recently come to my attention that a few of the contributions I gladly and all-too-quickly accepted were almost complete knock offs (as well as same mp3 links) of another blog, without any citations. I’ve never read this blog, but a PMA staff member has read it before and added it to the blogroll some time ago. I am really embarrassed something like this happened right under my nose. I want to apologize to Davis Allun Jones, a wonderful and skilled writer, for disgracefully passing his content as PMA’s.

I looked over his blog, and found that I like it very much. I have read over other posts not written by me or by PMA staff, and I do not see anything fishy, If you do, please email me, or leave a comment below. All posts in question will be deleted.
