Arctic Monkeys – Crying Lightning

Arctic Monkeys Crying Lightning listen
Mere hours before British radio was supposed to premiere the Arctic Monkeys’ new first single for their forthcoming Humbug, “Crying Lightning” hit the internet. I love when that happens.

The Arctic Monkeys opted to stray from their traditional, straightforward approach and have crafted a song far more complex than say, “I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor.”

The hook isn’t as hook-y as the aforementioned song, but signature Alex Turner melody and lyric is spot on. The guitar work on “Crying Lightning” is especially great. Guitarists Turner, Cook, and Bass Guitarist Nick O’Malley are spinning a web rather than rushing into a raw explosion of sound that has become common in Arctic Monkey records. Arctic Monkeys B-Sides & Rarities Project – What If You Were Right The First Time?

Arctic Monkeys B Sides & Rarities Project What If You Were Right The First Time? arctic monkeys b sides rarities project
Luis: It’s baaaaack

Hello you Pretty Much Amazing addicts. It’s Will from the less glamorous-and-famous little blog known as We All Want Someone To Shout For. I want to personally apologize for the delay on the Arctic Monkeys b-sides and rarities project. I have been so busy working 3 different part time jobs, as well as maintaining my own site and some sense of a personal life. How about we get back into the swing of things? I owe Luis an apology for how overdue this post is. However, I am finally back and ready to get this bad boy kicking again!

The timing is actually appropriate. The Arctic’s 3rd album Humbug is set to come out in August. The album seems to see the boys sounding more mature and different from their previous efforts.

The b-side that I decided to share with you guys today is “What If You Were Right The First Time?” from their fantastic Brianstorm EP. The song fits perfectly with Brianstorm with their darker, more aggressive sound. There is something about Matt Helders drumming that gets me every time in this song. At one part the band actually sounds sorta….metal. It is one of the Arctic Monkeys best songs in my opinion. (It is my 10th most listened to song on itunes!) This is the Arctic Monkeys darker and harder than ever! Listen to “What IF You Were Right The First Time?” here Continue reading →

Arctic Monkeys B-Sides & Rarities Project – The Lovers (Rod McKuen Cover)

Arctic Monkeys B Sides & Rarities Project The Lovers (Rod McKuen Cover) arctic monkeys b sides rarities project

The Arctic Monkeys B-Side & Rarities Project was inspired by Matthew Perpetua’s Pop Songs 07-08 project, and was first introduced on November 19, 2007 and it ended there. On March 21, 2009, Pretty Much Amazing reached out to a person with a lot more Arctic Monkey credentials, the man who named his music blog after a string of words Alex Turner wrote while try to figure out “Who The Fuck Are The Arctic Monkeys”: Will Oliver from We All Want Someone To Shout For.

The goal of this series of posts is fairly simple, I am going to write a post about all of the Arctic Monkeys B-Sides, non-album tracks, bootlegs and other rarities. I have no clue how long this will take, or even if I will finish it, but it should be a fun ride. You might be curious as to why I’d select the Arctic Monkeys as the subject of such scrutiny. To be frank, the Arctic Monkeys are one of the only bands of which I can honestly say that I saw flounder and flourish from beginning to present. I feel that I can relate to their music, along with everyone else that’s young and living their life in all its blundering glory.

Arctic Monkeys – Choo Choo

Before Favourite Worst Nightmare was even a thought, Sheffield’s Arctic Monkeys got their name out with great live performances and memorable demo’s. One of the songs that got left off of their debut album and any EP/Single release is the fan favorite “Choo Choo.” Continue reading →

The Arctic Monkeys were rammed into my life in 2004 when a friend of mine told me to listen to the latest band to come from across the pond. A full two years before their debut album was released, Beneath the Boardwalk was my first taste of the Arctics and I haven’t stopped nibbling yet.

Now that you know the story behind the relationship I have with the Arctic Monkeys, I think it’s time to get onto the first song we will be looking at, in part of this ongoing project — “7.”  Continue reading →

Arctic Monkeys – Red Right Hand (Nick Cave Cover)

Arctic Monkeys Red Right Hand (Nick Cave Cover) covers

A few days ago, I told you guys about the four new songs the Arctic Monkeys premiered live. What I didn’t mention was that on the same night, the Arctics also covered Nick Cave’s “Red Right Hand,” for lack of an mp3. Luckily, Hypeful has one to share.

The Arctic Monkeys have always been one of my favorite cover bands (em, or one of my favorite bands period). While their cover of this Nick Cave tune isn’t bad per se, it really doesn’t live up to their other amazing covers, like their cover of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good,” or their cover of Barbara Lewis’ 1965 classic “Baby I’m Yours.” Though, it’s hard to compare this cover to those, as it is live and the other ones were recorded in the studio.

Either way, for Arctic Monkeys fantatics who have been yernin’ for some new A-Monk tunes, here you go! Continue reading →

New Arctic Monkeys Songs Live – Crying Lightning / Dangerous Animals / Go-Kart / Pretty Visitor

New Arctic Monkeys Songs Live Crying Lightning / Dangerous Animals / Go Kart / Pretty Visitor listen

Thanks to We All Want Someone for copping some live recordings of some new Arctic Monkeys material! Promises of a third Arctic Monkeys album fell through in 2008, but 2009 has just started and we’re listening to 4 new songs already. Not bad at all.

If this third LP is anything like their first two, a new Arctic Monkeys album will, obviously, be a contender for my Top 10 come this December. Judging by these live bootlegs, the Monkeys are jumping even deeper into their music. This new stuff will probably not be as much as a sugar rush and a lot heavier, while still addictive in a fashion only the Arctic Monkeys can achieve.

The songs are called “Crying Lightning,” “Dangerous Animals,” “Go-Kart,” and “Pretty Visitors” and the mp3 rips below will sound a lot better than anything you’ll find on YouTube. What are you waiting for? Continue reading →

New (Old? Lame?) Justice – Sure You Will

Justice

I’m always happy when people email me new (at least to me) Justice tracks from the pre-Cross era. But I was definitely taken aback when I listened to “Sure You Will”. The first thing that came to mind when I heard it was that Arctic Monkeys and Coldplay “Justice remixes” that made brief rounds. And who can forget that somewhat brilliant fake “Hope”?

But before I render this atrocity fake, I performed a couple of Google surgeries and stumbled across this.

Justice initially formed for a French concept album. They
were asked by a friend at Poplane Records to contribute a song
to a compilation called Musclorvision: Hits Up ToYou! The
concept? The bands had to pretend they were taking part in the
Eurovision song contest.

Flashback? Definitely.

Justice – Sure You Will

But I’d really like to believe this is a big ass fake.

Big ass Justice fakes in the past:
Justice – Hope
Arctic Monkeys – When The Sun Goes Down (Justice Remix)
Coldplay – Violet Hill (Justice’s Death and His Friends Remix)

Song I was listening to at time of post: Oasis – Falling Down (Chemical Brothers Remix)

Reviving That Alleged Justice Remix

Arctic Monkeys
About five months ago, I posted this Justice Remix of the Arctic Monkeys’ “When I Sun Goes Down”. It somehow found its way into my inbox, a little bit after the major wave of D.A.N.C.E.H.Y.P.E. died down (and its still dying!). Now, from the get-go, the remix was pretty weak and vaguely resembled anything to spawn from the French duo, nonetheless I posted to remix to one of my random remix collection posts. Out of the blue, it became some kind of hype machine phenomenon — sparking tons of backlash. I failed to ever give a comment, but basically, my suspicions were solidified. And a little LOL, I was even Gutted by Check The Availability. Basically the track is mash-up, by whom, I don’t know, but these are the songs that make up this mini-blog phenom

The Arctic Monkeys – When The Sun Goes Down
Urban Shakedown – Some Justice
Liquid – Sweet Harmony
Beastie Boys – Ch-Check It Out

And here it is…

Arctic Monkeys – When The Sun Goes Down (Justice Remix) [YSI]… or not?

So maybe this will set the record straight? It just makes me sad seeing this remix pop up a few times in blogs and in forums causing unwanted amounts of confusion and anger.

Arctic Monkeys To Release Third Album This Year

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys fans have been waiting for news like this for quite a while. But the wait will come to an end soon enough. According to Daily Star, Arctic Monkeys are going to release their third album this year. That would make it album number three in three short years (not counting Alex Turner’s side project The Last Shadow Puppets, whose debut album drops April 21st). Fans are either gitty or pessimistic when it comes to learning of the third Arctic coming. Sophomore effort, Favorite Worst Nightmare was as good as, but not better than the ubiquitous debut Whatever People Say…, but is a third consecutive (dare I say) masterpiece asking a little too much?

This source seems to disagree:

“A lot of people were surprised to see Arctics at the Brits as it’s usually the kind of event they steer clear of. The reason they went is because they’ve been down in London working on new material and fancied a night off to relax. Alex is overflowing with song ideas and it’s all going so well they’re looking at releasing an album this year.”

So Mr. Frontman is “overflowing with song ideas”, to most this sounds sensational, but I just have to bring this up; this may be the crash and burn critics have been waiting for since Who the Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?
