Basement Jaxx are, at this point, an old group, as strange as that sounds. 2009’s Scars comes a full decade after the duo burst onto the dance music scene with Remedy, a longevity matched by few artists in today’s blog-and-youtube-and-download music culture. At this point, Basement Jaxx are pretty set in their ways – they got this far on the strength of quirky, vocal-centric house music that samples the instrumentation and character of R&B, funk, and more, while keeping it all unabashedly pop, and they’re not gonna change now. That said, there’s a reason Basement Jaxx are still putting out albums in 2009, and that’s because, although they have a formula, it’s a damn good one.

Scars is thus an exercise in execution – Basement Jaxx aren’t reinventing the wheel, just looking for a smooth ride. For the most part then, Scars is a success – these thirteen tracks are catchy, danceable, and thoroughly entertaining, if not ground-breaking. Starting off with the title track, Scars is a bit steadier than its predecessors – the beat thumping along throughout its 52 brisk minutes. It just feels like the product of an established, mature group; a polished, crisp sounding album. Continue reading →

Basement Jaxx – My Turn (ft. Lightspeed Champion)

Basement Jaxx My Turn (ft. Lightspeed Champion) listenBasement Jaxx make quirky house music, and the bass bumping throughout new track “My Turn” certainly won’t challenge the assumption. That said, “My Turn” isn’t just a banger to drop on the late night. Although Basement Jaxx tracks can sometimes feel like the guest vocalist is there just to be there, Devonte Hynes (a.k.a. Lightspeed Champion) really touches the heart strings with his vocals, and they never feel extraneous or cheesy.

Straightforward pop song structure, catchy hooks, 4/4 beat, and vocal harmonies make this about as radio friendly as house gets; I bet your girlfriend will like this one. Notwithstanding, it is still a Basement Jaxx track, so there is the aforementioned banging bass, the acoustic guitar, the weird little sample snippets, squeaks and squawks running through the track.Compared to previous Jaxx pop-boppers like “Romeo” and “Hot N Cold,” “My Turn” sounds a bit calmer, smoothed out almost.

Ultimately, “My Turn” may sacrifice some of Basement Jaxx’s idiosyncratic groove-making ways for the sake of broader appeal (it’s not obvious that this is a Jaxx track on first, or even second listen), but if you like well crafted pop you can dance to, you won’t be disappointed. Basement Jaxx – Day of Sunflowers (We March On) (ft. Yoko Ono)

Basement Jaxx Day of Sunflowers (We March On) (ft. Yoko Ono) listen
The British duo, Basement Jaxx is back with their newest studio alum, Scars. Their fifth album contains the song “Day of The Sunflower (We March On),” which features Yoko Ono and reminds of me of a Halloween tune with catchy lyrics.

Obscure is the best way to describe the song. It has aspects of house music with quirks and bleeps that keep your attention. The lyrics are captivating and truthful. At the song’s climax, Ono chants, “Open like a flower, come get naked with me. Music take me whole and tie me up in melody…” “Day of Sunflowers (We March On)” lives up to Scars singles like “Raindrops,” capturing listeners’ attention in a headlock and keeps their expectations high for Basement Jaxx’s forthcoming set.

The full album will be out October 6th in the US (already out in the UK, Canada and Australia) via Ultra Records. The entire album seems promising with guest vocals on several of the tracks such as Santigold and Yo! Majesty — we’ve previewed additional tracks here. Listen to “Day of Sunflowers…” below: Continue reading →

Basement Jaxx’s Scars Leaks

Basement Jaxxs Scars Leaks listen
Basement Jaxx’s upcoming album Scars leaked the other night and I’m giving it my first listen this evening, right in time for the weekend’s festivities. It’s a bit moodier than I thought, which is sounding pretty great right now. Here are a couple tracks I liked so far. Proper review soon.

Joker

Dubstep. I’m not an expert on the subject, I’m merely a catechized fan of the extraordinary and bewildering sounds. The chops and drops make my head spin. The lack of any human emotion in the music is both startling and riveting.

I will be honest, my first taste of dubstep (using the term loosely here) was actually found in Britney Spears’ impeccable 5th studio album, Blackout; the track in question: “Freakshow.” Even the almighty Pitchfork had a lot to say about the track, inciting me to explore this thing they called dubstep.

So it comes to no surprise that I found Joker by way of Pitchfork. They have reviewed two of his tracks, “Purple City” and “Digidesign,” both eliciting a rating of 8/10, the latter is even graced with “Best New Music.” I can do nothing but sit here and agree with them. This stuff is fantastic.

Joker has also remixed Basement Jaxx’s “Raindrops” with crew mate Ginz. It’s pretty smooth. :)

Best Album of 2001

Previously: Best album of 2000 (Readers’ Choice & PMA’s Choice)

We’ve set out to find the 10 best albums of the decade, according to our readers as well as our own personal favorite. So this gives us a maximum of listing the 20 best albums of the 2000s. Though I haven’t ruled out the possibility that the Readers’ and PMA’s choices might be the same album. So we’ll play this by ear.

Like last time, I’ll list ten candidates for best album of 2001. These candidates are determined by their inclusion in various year-end lists from publications we trust, including, the Village Voice 2001 Pazz & Jop Poll, NME, The Onion, Mojo, Los Angeles Times, Spin, and Uncut. Please vote for the album you think was the best in 2001. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway).

A. Love And Theft by Bob Dylan
B. Is This It? by The Strokes
C. Amnesiac by Radiohead
D. White Blood Cells by The White Stripes
E. Vespertine by Bjork
F. Discovery by Daft Punk
G. Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós
H. The Blueprint by Jay-Z
I. Things We Lost In the Fire by Low
J. Rooty by Basement Jaxx

Basement Jaxx – Saga (ft. Santigold) / She’s No Good (ft. Lightspeed Champion)

Basement Jaxx Saga (ft. Santigold) / Shes No Good (ft. Lightspeed Champion) listen
Basement Jaxx are finishing up their upcoming LP, Scars for its October release, according to a Billboard report. The album’s ridiculously fantastic first single “Raindrops,” has already made Scars one of the most anticipated albums of the second half of 2009 — and now we have got the chance to listen to a few more cuts from the album, including “Saga” featuring Santigold and “She’s No Good” featuring Lightspeed Champion.

“Saga” isn’t crazy-fun like “Raindrops,” instead Basement Jaxx have created a dub environment reminiscent of Santigold’s debut album. A little disappointing because Santi can really thrash over a sick electro beat (see: Creator, Gifted). Notwithstanding, “Saga” is an exceptional Santigold track; a cut that would impress and satisfy any Basement Jaxx and Santi fan. Continue reading →
