Bat For Lashes – Pearl’s Dream (Skream’s Pour Another Glass of Champers Remix)

Quicky: [download id="324"]

Dubstep is all the rage, so naturally it’s hard to find a dubstepper who constantly delivers the goods. Super-producer Skream is one of the chosen few who has never really let me down when it comes to indie-turned-dubstep remixes. Here is his remix of Bat For Lashes’ “Pearl’s Dream.”

Learnalilgivinanlovin’

Learnalilgivinanlovin listen
Gotye. I’ve been urged to blog about Wally De Backer’s music for a while now. Don’t you dare ask me why I haven’t. Maybe I thought you weren’t ready for this? Maybe I simply kept forgetting to?  Well whatever the reason, Gotye’s music has remained, for the most part, a nicely kept secret. Last year, this tune, “Learnalilgivinanlovin’” was released in various parts of the world, but garnered very little exposure for the young Australian artist.

Luckily, Backer will receive his very first US release with a 7″ single for “Learnalilgivinanlovin’.” It will be backed by a remixed by Passion Pit. Hopefully that will certainly entice people to go out and listen to Gotye. It will be released via Neon Gold on August 17th. It only costs $5. Buy it here.

Gotye – Learnalilgivinanlovin’
from Learnalilgivinanlovin’ 7″ (2009)

Bonus: Gotye – Heart’s A Mess
from Like Drawing Blood (2006)

and the rest of the songs (Au Revoir Simone, The Big Pink, et la) that kept me company on a lonely, scenic drive. Continue reading →

Bat For Lashes – Use Somebody (Kings of Leon Cover)

Bat For Lashes Use Somebody (Kings of Leon Cover) covers
[rating:72/100]
PMA fave Bat For Lashes stopped by BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge not too long ago and delivered a beautiful cover of Only By The Night-highlight, “Use Somebody.” Bat For Lashes breathes new, minimalistic life into “Use Somebody.” Listening to Caleb’s voice on the original make me yearn for a duet between these two artists. Natasha Kahn’s butterly smooth vocals will simply melt alongside Caleb Followill’s powerful instrument.

In my honest opinion, no cover will best the Kings of Leon version — filled with a storm of lusty, longing vocals. Bat For Lashes’ cover is a great change of pace and is in no way a disservice to the song, but acts pretty well as a foil to the original.

Catch the cover and a bonus “lo-fi” version of Natasha’s amazing “Daniel,” all after the jump. Continue reading →

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009 (.25 of the way through)

Today is the 91st day of 2009, or (almost) exactly one quarter of the way through 2009. Is it too soon to start thinking of “Best Songs” honors? I don’t think so!

Before I get into the list, I want to set up some ground rules: The only songs eligible are songs that were released as singles in 2009 (Jan 1st – March 31st, in this case). This will really limit this initial list, as some of my favorite songs of the year have been non-single album tracks, like “Summertime Clothes” by Animal Collective, or “Dull Life” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Well, actually, I think that’s the only rule.

Let’s get on to the list, shall we? Continue reading →

Remix-A-Day: Bat For Lashes – Daniel (Death Metal Disco Scene Remix)

Because we are focusing more on upcoming musical releases around here, new remixes get the short end of the PMA stick, sadly. I am determined to devote one post a day on new remixes, instead of bunching 10+ remixes in bulk. That has become somewhat tacky. Click here to read all of our Remix-A-Day remixes.

We <3 Bat For Lashes: from 8-bulb glory to hitting the dancefloor

Remix A Day: Bat For Lashes Daniel (Death Metal Disco Scene Remix) mp3You will notice a trend in the remixes that I post up, they are a lot simpler than the big productions you hear a lot. These kinds of remixes are most appreciated when the song in the hot seat is great on its own and needs no remix to validate it. This is the case for Bat For Lashes’ “Daniel” and Death Metal Disco Scene do a wonderful job at crafting an understated and enjoyable remix.

The remix plays heavily with shakers, rattlers, and string arrangements. It also does amazing work accenting Natasha Khan’s voice as well as one of the most memorable piece of lyric in 2009: When I first saw you, I knew that you had a flame in your heart. Continue reading →

Bat For Lashes – Two Suns Album Review

Bat For Lashes Two Suns Album Review album reviews reviews 2
[rating:81/100]
Bat For Lashes, aka Natasha Khan, returns on April 6th with her sophomore album, Two Suns, a record of such incredible depth and beauty that it has taken me the best part of a month (just ask Luis if you don’t believe me) to work this out; it’s going to delight and disappoint fans of Fur & Gold in equal measure. Sorry for the anti climax! On the plus side, fans of Natasha’s Mercury Prize Nominated Fur & Gold will feel spoilt for choice with the heartrendingly nihilistic vignettes they’ve come to expect from her. Unfortunately, if fans were expecting a lean towards a more accessible album and for Natasha to get the credit she deserves as an incredible songwriter in album sales, they’ll be bitterly disappointed. Of course, this fact is hard to get upset about juxtaposed next to Natasha proclaiming that “Crying took me to the darkest place/And you have set fire to my heart”. OK, OK; seems like she might have bigger fish to fry than whether vacuous 14 year old girls are going to be bopping around to her songs at their rubbish parties. Her heart’s on fire, for god’s sake! And from the general mood of the album, I get the sense that it’s not in a Cut Copy-ish “Yeah, my heart’s on fire, dude!!!” type of way… Continue reading →

Lady GaGa does Heidi Montag’s “Fashion” – Really?

Lady GaGa does Heidi Montags Fashion Really? listen

Lady GaGa – Fashion

Lady GaGa covered Heidi Montag’s “Fashion” (what the fuck?) for the Confessions of a Shopoholic Soundtrack (another movie I shamelessly want to watch this Valentine’s Day weekend). Now, I’ve only heard Heidi’s version once when Ryan Seacrest played it on KIIS FM a while ago. I don’t remember much, but I remember that it sucked hard. Very hard. The song sort of makes sense when Lady GaGa sings it. Sure, it’s flows through the same vain as GaGa’s “Vanity,” but her faux-French accent when she pronounces the labels with the weird names is kind of hilarious. The song runs at a short 2:50, and feels like half of a song; but it’s fun fluff. Great for a long, long Hump Day. Preview it below: Continue reading →
