Beat Radio – Behind the Blue

Beat Radio Behind the Blue listen

I’ve been ranting and raving about the uber-chill Beat Radio for a while now. Are you listening? Beat Radio (aka Brian Sendrowitz) crafts smooth lo-fi pop songs about teenage love affairs, broken hearts, good friends, and the secrets of the universe.

“Behind the Blue” appears on Beat Radio’s second LP, Safe Inside The Sound, which Brian is giving away for free on his site.

Check out other Beat Radio tunes here. My favorites are “Sleepwalking” and “Sunday Matinee“.

Beat Radio – Sunday Matinee

Beat Radio Sunday Matinee listen

Last July I introduced you all to Beat Radio and their great Sunday Matinee EP. It seems that Beat Radio has reworked the EP’s titular track for their upcoming sophomore LP Safe Inside The Sound.

The new “Sunday Matinee” is a bit more exciting, as Brian mentioned on his blog, messing around with various keyboard effects. Their EP and this song especially, traveled with me for most of the summer, so it isn’t always easy listening to a new version, but I am pretty sure Beat Radio made this one better.

Beat Radio – Sleepwalking

Beat Radio Sleepwalking listen

The kick drum sound on this song is a field recording of fireworks exploding. I got it from freesound.org. I wanted the song to feel like summer. I wanted it to be a rock and roll song. The lyrics are about trying to create a sense of community. You surround yourself with creative people and you support each other, in basements, in bars, drinking cheap wine in backyards. Without them you fall to pieces. Sometimes even with them you fall to pieces.

-Brian aka Beat Radio

I love this song. I love that the crazy sounds resonating through my ears are fireworks exploding. I love that this song makes me want to call up my buddies and hang out and abandon my fort for a while.

“Sleepwalking” is little fuzzy, lo-fi bits of deliciousness. Brian may have intended this to sound like summer, but it feels like summer is ending. Sadface… but at least it’s going out in style.

Beat Radio – Memoir of a Lightning Bolt

Beat Radio Memoir of a Lightning Bolt listen
A few days ago I introduced Beat Radio and his Sunday Matinee EP to you, and those three songs quickly became the most downloaded mp3s on the entire site. It’s official: PMA readers love Beat Radio. Seriously.

At the end of the post, I mentioned about the track off Beat Radio’s sophomore album, Safe Inside The Sound, “Memoir of a Lightning Bolt.” Luckily, Beat Radio’s fun-loving summer sound has remained unchanged. If anything, it’s even more lovable than before. Listen to the song here Continue reading →

Let’s give Beat Radio a warm welcome.

No pretense here, Beat Radio is here just to make some great summer tunes. Their new free EP, Sunday Matinee, is three songs that will see heavy rotation on my iPod this summer.

I don’t know how the weather is where you live, but Beat Radio is perfect sweet, beach dream-pop for the wonderful weather Angelinos have been graced with all summer long.

Beat Radio’s debut record The Great Big Sea out on iTunes. LP2 Safe Inside the Sound should be out Summer 2009.

Listen to their delightful EP here:

1. Teenage Anthem for the Drunken Boat
2. Stranger Flowers
3. Sunday Matinee

Let me know if you dig Beat Radio. I have a track from their upcoming second LP… and it’s pretty fuckin’ great, but I figured the free EP was a nice enough introduction.

And totally separate and unrelated… an interesting “Poker Face” cover! Continue reading →
