Best Album of 2002 Poll

Best Albums of 00 | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09

Continuing in our quest to find the best albums of the 2000s, we look at the greatest albums released in 2002. A very fine year in music. As always, we depend on your votes to help us come closer to our verdict of the best album of the last 10 years, in the mean time, we will outline your favorite and our favorite albums of each year.

For 2002’s list, I turned to the Village Voice and their righteous Pazz & Jop Poll, surveying nearly 700 critics. I also went through a few Year-end lists presented by The Onion’s AV Club.

Please vote for the album you think was the best in 2002. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway). Here are 2002’s finalists:

A. The Streets: Original Pirate Material
B. Coldplay: A Rush Of Blood To The Head
C. Missy Elliott: Under Construction
D. Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
E. Beck: Sea Change
F. Sigur Rós: ()
G. The Roots: Phrenology
H. Queens of the Stone Age: Songs for the Deaf
I. Spoon: Kill The Moonlight
J. Iron & Wine: The Creek Drank The Cradle

Some Remixes on a Sunday #2

Some Remixes on a Sunday #2 mp3

Continuing this from last Sunday.

Listen up. I’ve got a whole lotta new shizz for you and your granny. No, I really do. I’m just completely swamped. If I had a bit more time this week, almost every single one of these remixes would have seen its own post. But, alas, life doesn’t work out that way. Maybe some of you can help me?

Beyond normal life stuff, I have been pretty busy watching movies. Award season is upon us and I am still severely behind. While most of the theaters around here are playing what I want to see, I am having scheduling issues. My big priorities this week are: Rachel Getting Married, The Wrestler, and Gran Torino. I say that in confidence because I already wasted this weekend watching some pretty shitty guilty pleasure movies.

Yes. I watched Bride Wars and The Unborn this weekend, instead of catching up on films I know I would enjoy. Bride Wars wasn’t too bad — I didn’t expect much in the first place, but The Unborn was just insulting. Hopefully now I’ve had my fill of cheap Hollywood escapism. I need to focus on cheap-yet-affluent escapist movies now. But before I throw away $100 this week in movies (and movie-related expenses), have any of you seen Rachel Getting Married, The Wrestler, or Gran Torino? Are either of those films that I may not need to watch at the theater? Would the comfort of my own home suffice? Can you point me in the right direction of the torrent?

Damn, and I still have to watch The Reader, I’ve Loved You So Long, Frost/Nixon, Defiance, Che, and Good.

Now, my mom raised me right. I won’t ask for something without giving you another something in return. Here are 10 Remixes. But before you listen… isn’t that a cool pic up there?

Kings Of Leon – Use Somebody (Dolby Anol Remix)

I’m not going to comment on every remix, but this first one is just splendid. I can’t begin to tell you how much I like this one. Great use of this particularly great KOL track. Continue reading →

Blog Wars: The Genius Playlist | Round 1, Battle 2

Just incase you missed it: here is the first battle of The Genius Playlist Blog Wars. Refer to that post if you don’t know what’s going on.

On the first battle, Sheena Beaston and Pigeons & Planes went head to head and fought for your votes. The final verdict: Sheena Beaston takes a whopping 65% of the votes. Sorry Pigeons, but you’re out.

On today’s Blog War battle, we’re pinning up The Music Slut and We All Want Someone… together. Both participants had to create Genius Playlists starring Radiohead’s “Bodysnatchers.”  This time it’s going to be a tad bit more difficult to decide on who to vote for because iTunes’ Genius selected songs that appeared on both of the lists. It’s going to be interesting to see which few songs prevail and snag your vote.

The Music Slut and WAWSTSF duke it out with Radiohead and co. as their ammo. Vote or Die!

Blog Wars: The Genius Playlist | Round 1, Battle 1

Hello and welcome to the first ever Blog Wars hosted by Pretty Much Amazing! This is the first of hopefully many Blog Wars to come. This particular Blog War pins bloggers and their music libraries against each other. Utilizing iTune’s “Genius Playlist” feature, 10 bloggers will go head to head and compete for your votes!

This is how it works:

I get two bloggers to create a Genius Playlist stemmed from the same song. I will publish said playlists here and you, the readers, will decide which one you like best! This is  100% winner-takes-all so choose your favorite blogger wisely.

Here is the complete list of participating blogs:
I Guess I’m Floating

Stereogum & team9 Present… MySplice III

Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III mp3

Stereogum and team9 have teamed up for a third year in a row to bring us their MySplice III mashup compilation. The mix includes 2008 blog staples like Bloc Party, Lykke Le, of Montreal, Beck, and Crystal Castles mashed with 2008’s ineluctable pop hits (Britney Spears, Rihanna, Kanye, Katy Perry). Oh, and they through in some oldies as well (Cyndi Lauper, Guns N’ Roses, etc).

I don’t know if you guys feel it too, but I can’t help but think this is the best MySplice yet.

Stream the whole thing here, and download the mp3s below the player.

New Bloc Party, N.E.R.D. (+Santogold, ~The Strokes), Beck, and Death Cab Videos

Bloc Party have certainly proven that whenever they decide to drop a random single, the world listens (see:Flux, Mercury). Their latest hype-endeavor and second nudge at a new album, “Mercury” has successfully made its way into the front page of most of the music blogs out there (the ones I read anyway) — and don’t think it’s gonna stop, I have a feeling the band will announce a new album pretty soon. The video for “Mercury” was synonymously released with the single (I just waited to post it until I had enough videos that caught my attention to post about).

With all the hype surrounding this song, the inevitable has happened: plagiarism accusations. Hypeful has pointed out that This Just Happened pointed out (gotta love trackbacks) that “Mercury” bared “a striking resemblance” to “Shock The Monkey”, by Peter Gabriel. Was Bloc Party inspired by a Monkey?

Bloc Party – Mercury
Peter Gabriel – Shock The Monkey

About a month or so ago Pharrell Williams, Santogold, and Julian Casablancas (of Strokes fame) recorded “My Drive Thru” for Converse’ 100 Year Chuck Taylor celebration. Now the music video dropped, and its friggin fantastic. Watch. ’nuff said.

I am thoroughly enjoying Beck’s Danger Mouse produced Modern Guilt, I have failed to post anything about it because of specific server issues, but I have already shared my love for “Orphans”, and now first single “Gamma Ray” has a video for all to watch. The video itself is stellar and fits the song like a glove.

When Coffee Dreams, It Dreams of Chocolate.

When Coffee Dreams, It Dreams of Chocolate. listen

So I just forced to got around to trying out this Hershey’s and Starbucks love child at work this morning… and they’re DAMN GOOD. It’s like dramatic good, almost over-dramatically good. You know that kind of good that’s sort of pretentious-bitchy, but you love it anyway? Yeah that kind. My personal favorite is the Mocha Dark Chocolate bar, but the Milk Chocolate Chai Truffle is also delicious. They also have chocolate covered coffee beans, stay away… they’re kinda weird. Just weird. It may be that I’m sort of a chocolate snob and I harp on milk chocolate a lot (unless its blended with chai, of course).

I strongly suggest you grab yourself a box of these goodies… oh and they’re also a great gift!

The reason I brought them up in the first place was that I love listening to music while devouring (yes, devouring) goodies. I kind of hand-picked the next few tracks (with help of the Hype Machine) to help savor my chocolate, and I was bored.

Beck – Orphans
Bloc Party – Mercury (hey, it’s a grower)
Black Kids – Partie Traumatic
CSS – Move
The Kooks – One Last Time
