Ben Folds Gets All Collegiate On Us

Ben Folds Gets All Collegiate On Us music

We all know how much Ben Folds loves colleges and a cappella bands. As a matter of fact, he is constantly on the college circuit, recently hitting up universities with both PMA fave Miniature Tigers and world fave Jason Mraz. At all of these shows, he makes sure to bring out the college’s a cappella group to do a few songs for the enthusiastic audience (this happened wonderfully at the Princeton show I attended, and seems to happen everywhere he goes). At that concert, Folds talked about an album he was mixing and recording featuring all of these great college crews covering his songs. And now, that album is finally (almost) here. Full with covers of Ben Folds Five classics, Ben Folds solo classics, and ultimately just great songs, this album is certainly one to get pumped about.

At the Princeton show, Folds excitedly ran on stage, prompting the Nassoons to play another song, and the group’s leader lit up like you would not believe. What is great about those moments at his shows, along with this album, is that Folds is just as thrilled to be doing this as the bands are. He considers this to be an actual record of his:

“This is not a novelty .. I consider this my new record…I’m incredibly proud of this. If this were Ben World, this would be my greatest hits album. I’d rather this be my greatest hits record than someone collecting my masters and slapping on a photo of me leaning against a piano. This is a better way. I’m a songwriter, and these are my songs.”

Along with all of the covers, Folds himself has recorded a cappella versions of two songs, one being Way To Normal standout “Effington.” Click on for two videos: the University of Rochester Midnight Ramblers covering “Army” and the UNCG Spartones’ beautiful take on “Not The Same.” The album, Ben Folds Presents: University A Cappella, drops April 28th. Get To Know: The Miniature Tigers

Get To Know: The Miniature Tigers live music

When I saw Ben Folds last week at Princeton’s McCarter Theater, I was blown away by the opening act, Miniature Tigers. The band instantly impressed with unbelievably catchy hooks, quirky lyrics, and fun instrumentals. After just a few listens to their debut LP, Tell It To The Volcano, you’ll be singing along with the tune of every song. The highlights are many- just about every song manages to stay in your head and have you feeling some kind of nostalgic emotion. What makes the music so great is it’s melancholy sweetness. All of the tracks are pure, unadulterated power-pop-rock, but below them lies a dark, solemn tone.

If you can’t gather from the gushing, this is just great music. Standout tracks are surely “The Wolf,” “Dino Damage,” “Cannibal Queen,” and the song from which the album gets its title, “Tell It To The Volcano.” But the point of this post is not to review the PMA-recommended album. No, the point of this post is to get you to know the band: PMA has an exclusive interview with lead singer Charlie Brand. Read on below for the interview and a couple MP3s. And don’t forget to pick up the album when you’re done! Seriously, it’s worth it. Continue reading →

Concert Review: Ben Folds and Miniature Tigers

Concert Review: Ben Folds and Miniature Tigers gigs

[rating:82/100]

Rocked the house. There’s no other phrase to describe what Ben Folds did Wednesday night at Princeton’s McCarter Theater. Well, I guess there are other phrases. Stunningly brilliant. Extremely funny. A case of the sniffles (poor Ben had a cold). However you want to describe him, it’s very likely that you’ve never seen anyone pound a piano the way Mr. Folds can (think Jerry Lee Lewis). Read on for more about his magnificent performance, and also about up-and-coming openers Miniature Tigers.

Stereogum & team9 Present… MySplice III

Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III mp3

Stereogum and team9 have teamed up for a third year in a row to bring us their MySplice III mashup compilation. The mix includes 2008 blog staples like Bloc Party, Lykke Le, of Montreal, Beck, and Crystal Castles mashed with 2008’s ineluctable pop hits (Britney Spears, Rihanna, Kanye, Katy Perry). Oh, and they through in some oldies as well (Cyndi Lauper, Guns N’ Roses, etc).

I don’t know if you guys feel it too, but I can’t help but think this is the best MySplice yet.

Stream the whole thing here, and download the mp3s below the player.
