Lady GaGa “Telephone” (feat. Beyonce) Music Video

You can watch Lady GaGa’s nine and a half minute tribute to Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction in her new music video for “Telephone”. While the chola fights, product placement, unusual fashion (smoking cigarette sunglasses, beer can hair rollers, CSI tape “body suits”), the mass murder and the infamous Pussy Wagon are far more interesting than the song itself, this hasn’t stopped “Telephone” from becoming Lady GaGa’s sixth straight No. 1 song on Billboard’s Pop Song Charts.

Major Lazer “Halo” (Beyonce Cover)

Major Lazer Halo (Beyonce Cover) coversIs this Photo Racist?

Last night Beyonce broke the record she shared with Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and Alison Kraus for most GRAMMYs won by a female in a single night. On last night’s GRAMMY Awards, Beyonce took six awards (the previous record being five) including Song of the Year for “Single Ladies”.

In honor of this event, Diplo and Switch’s Major Lazer covered Beyonce’s “Halo”, which won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and was nominated for Record of the Year.

This one goes up there with the Big Pink’s cover of Bey’s “Sweet Dreams”. Download the MP3 below: Continue reading →

Lady GaGa “Telephone” (feat. Beyonce) (Passion Pit Remix)

Lady GaGa Telephone (feat. Beyonce) (Passion Pit Remix) listen

In a predictable move, Lady GaGa has gone with her duet with Beyonce, “Telephone”, as The Fame Monster’s follow-up to the transcendent “Bad Romance” (in a stupid move, I hear “So Happy I Could Die” is Monster’s third single). Nothing good has come from this seemingly epic collaboration between two of music’s current most relevant icons. “Telephone” is insulting to anyone with half a brain, but still miles ahead of its cringe-worthy R&B counterpart “Videophone”. However, producer Rodney Jerkins really put all he had into this and he has created a Britney-like backing track that will surely capture radio programmer’s hearts everywhere, soon enough.

And finally, in an interesting move, the Haus of GaGa have enlisted Passion Pit to remix the track for “Telephone”’s eventual Remix EP. The first two minutes of “Telephone” are altered and sped up so that Lady GaGa’s voice is rendered and warped into a squeaky, chipmunk-like state, letting us know that we are definitely in Passion Pit territory now. Thereafter, Passion Pit hit their stride and construct a slippery and explosive soundscape for the short vocal loop.

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009 featureArtwork by the talented and generous Adam Sarpalius.

The final list is here. We have been working on this Absolute (sarcasm) Best Songs of 2009 list all year, updating it at the end of every quarter. I was only going to have PMA’s Top 50 of the year listen, but I couldn’t narrow it down beyond the top 75. This list will represent and acknowledge some of the artists I felt had to be left out of our Best Albums of 2009 list.

As always, I upheld only one rule while making this list: a song cannot be on this list, unless it was released as a single. As a reminder, here is my definition of the word “single” — 1) A song that has been given away for free to promote an upcoming album (known as a promotional single). 2) A song that has been played on TV or the radio (two of the largest mediums of discovering new music). 3) A song with its own music video and/or EP. 4) Loophole: an album-track that has attracted enormous amounts of attention that it’s become that artist’s “calling card” of sorts.

I want to thank everyone who takes the time to leave a comment, even if its obvious that you came here through Google (PMA pops up when you google “Best Songs of 2009″). As always, don’t be shy to share your personal favorites of the year. Trust me when I tell you I didn’t go out of my way to list all of your favorite songs of the year, so if you want those songs represented, list them yourselves in the comments. I also want to thank the wonderful contributors this site has for helping me with this list. And finally, Adam Sarpalius, whose work as graced this list since July.

Now, onto the Top 75: Continue reading →

#18. Beyonce – Crazy In Love

#18. Beyonce Crazy In Love featureArtwork by Adam Sarpalius

As 2009, and the decade come to a close, PMA will be looking back at our favorite songs of the last ten years. We will update a list with 75 empty slots until we reach that song that changed everything. You can keep track of this list by keeping an eye on this page. We make these lists in hopes that you guys will chime in the comments and share your favorite musical moments of the noughties.

#18. Beyonce Crazy In Love feature I almost want to believe that Beyonce took some pointers on how to release a proper debut single from LCD Soundsystem, but something tells me B only did that whole Destiny’s Child thing to promote “Crazy In Love”.

People say that the reason why “Crazy In Love” was so great was because it was real, because she was crazy in love with Jay-Z when she penned the song with him.

That’s just the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard.

I’ll tell you why “Crazy In Love” has endless appeal. After a stint with her R&B girlfriends, Beyonce wrote her first ever pop song, smoothed her vocals out and restricted her range to an octave and half for an easy-going, singable tune. Most importantly, is that infectious horns-infused hook, sampled from “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)” by The Chi-Lites. They’re the first thing we hear on “Crazy In Love”, and to be honest, its the reason why we keep coming back.

And come back to it we did, over and over again. Years after its prime, “Crazy In Love” has proven to be one of the most replayable pop tunes of the noughties (unies?), and I don’t see myself taking it off my regular playlist anytime soon.

The Big Pink – Sweet Dreams (Beyonce Cover)

The Big Pink Sweet Dreams (Beyonce Cover) coversPhoto by Emma Svensson

I first heard “Sweet Dreams” a year or two ago, back when it was simply known as “Beautiful Nightmare”, and even then I felt that this song was sort of wasted on Beyonce.

Over the course of a Beyonce album, there will most definitely be a handful of Hip-Pop&B, cross-platform hits that validate it — songs like “Crazy In Love”, “Irreplaceable” and “Single Ladies” that are just so Beyonce. “Sweet Dreams” was a bit more special than that, I felt. A bit too special to be lumped together with such sensory trickery.

I am indescribably glad that the Big Pink played “Sweet Dreams” during their Live Lounge session at BBC Radio 1. Their lo-fi take on Beyonce’s synthesized, pitch-perfect, all-around pop masterpiece feels right at home in the Big Pink’s repertory. In a setting that can be described as the polar opposite of the setting Beyonce and her team created, “Sweet Dreams” still works devastatingly well. Continue reading →

Music From Gossip Girl: Season 3, Episode 10

Music From Gossip Girl: Season 3, Episode 10 listenLady GaGa on Gossip Girl
Last night’s episode of Gossip Girl featured a lot of Lady Gaga (and even a performance by GaGa). So much that it was almost ridiculous. This GaGa injection was, no doubt, in promotion of Lady GaGa’s upcoming album The Fame Monster.

The episode prominently featured Monster “Bad Romance” and “Made in the Dark” — in fact, after Lady GaGa’s performance of “Bad Romance” on Gossip Girl, the song has climbed to the No. 1 stop on iTunes. But the standout GaGa track featured on Gossip Girl had to be that fierce Beyonce and Lady GaGa collaboration. Continue reading →

VV Brown – Crazy In Love (Beyonce Cover), PMA Premiere

YouTube Preview Image

VV Brown transforms Beyonce’s Pitchfork-adored “Crazy In Love” into a pumped-up, folksy flurry of energy. It’s the latest track in her series of live covers. Past covers include Kid Cudi’s “Day N Nite” and Drake’s “Best I’ve Ever Had.” Her frantic rendition of “Crazy In Love” is easily the best of the bunch and has a killer chance of becoming my favorite cover of the year.

Make sure to check out VV Brown’s latest release, The Attic EP on iTunes. You can now download VV Brown’s “Crazy In Love” cover on MP3! Continue reading →
