The Thinking Man’s Take On: Alter Egos

It’s time to talk about a growing trend in pop music that is often confusing, sometimes disturbing, and often remarkably effective. No, I’m not talking about Autotune (although that time will come) – I’m talking about musical artists adopting multiple personalities.

To be clear, I’m not talking Puff Daddy/Puffy/P.Diddy/Diddy multiple personalities. Not Prince, The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, or The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, either. I’m talking Eminem/Slim Shady multiple personalities. T.I./T.I.P. multiple personalities. Cookie Monster/Veggie Monster multiple personalities. More and more, in contemporary music, artists already performing under nom-de-records are choosing new names for new music. Why? And why does something that seems so wrong feel so right? Terry Urban: MGMT x Q-Tip. Jay-Z x Kid Cudi. Beyonce x The Cure

Terry Urban: MGMT x Q Tip. Jay Z x Kid Cudi. Beyonce x The Cure listen

Kind of late on this one, but better late than never, I always say! I’ve always liked Terry Urban. I’m not sure if it’s because of his actual work, or because of how exciting his projects seem to be. On Urban’s How My Brain Works 2, he mixes blogbabies MGMT with rap legend Q-Tip, legend and newcomer, and everything in between (somehow between MGMT vs Q-Tip and Jay-Z vs Kid Cudi, Terry mixes Beyonce with the Cure, that’s sheer awesomeness).

MGMT ft. Q-Tip – Electric Stop

Jay-Z ft. Kid Cudi – Party Day N Nite

Beyonce ft. The Cure – Emo Ladies

Shoutout to Terry Urban’s blog for the tracklist and the download to the whole compilation! Download the whole thing after the jump!

Some Remixes on a Sunday #2

Some Remixes on a Sunday #2 mp3

Continuing this from last Sunday.

Listen up. I’ve got a whole lotta new shizz for you and your granny. No, I really do. I’m just completely swamped. If I had a bit more time this week, almost every single one of these remixes would have seen its own post. But, alas, life doesn’t work out that way. Maybe some of you can help me?

Beyond normal life stuff, I have been pretty busy watching movies. Award season is upon us and I am still severely behind. While most of the theaters around here are playing what I want to see, I am having scheduling issues. My big priorities this week are: Rachel Getting Married, The Wrestler, and Gran Torino. I say that in confidence because I already wasted this weekend watching some pretty shitty guilty pleasure movies.

Yes. I watched Bride Wars and The Unborn this weekend, instead of catching up on films I know I would enjoy. Bride Wars wasn’t too bad — I didn’t expect much in the first place, but The Unborn was just insulting. Hopefully now I’ve had my fill of cheap Hollywood escapism. I need to focus on cheap-yet-affluent escapist movies now. But before I throw away $100 this week in movies (and movie-related expenses), have any of you seen Rachel Getting Married, The Wrestler, or Gran Torino? Are either of those films that I may not need to watch at the theater? Would the comfort of my own home suffice? Can you point me in the right direction of the torrent?

Damn, and I still have to watch The Reader, I’ve Loved You So Long, Frost/Nixon, Defiance, Che, and Good.

Now, my mom raised me right. I won’t ask for something without giving you another something in return. Here are 10 Remixes. But before you listen… isn’t that a cool pic up there?

Kings Of Leon – Use Somebody (Dolby Anol Remix)

I’m not going to comment on every remix, but this first one is just splendid. I can’t begin to tell you how much I like this one. Great use of this particularly great KOL track. Continue reading →

Adam’s Best of 2008

Best Songs of 2008

1. “Skinny Love,” Bon Iver- This acoustic ballad is one of the most brilliant, haunting songs you’ll ever hear. While I didn’t love Bon Iver’s complete album as much as everyone else does, this song is a stunner, and the best of the year.

2. “White Winter Hymnal,” Fleet Foxes- The Fleet Foxes did an excellent job of reviving old-school Beach Boys harmonies. This song has the perfect mix of fun catchiness and melancholy sadness. A sweet, quick little tune, but a memorable one.

3. “Walcott,” Vampire Weekend- Vampire Weekend’s anthem about getting the hell out of Cape Cod is also their best track, with violins, a sing-along chorus, a gradual build, an epic ending, and most of all, that piano chord that will always roll along in your head.

4. “Family Tree,” TV on the Radio- Another beautiful song with a little more production than “Skinny Love.” Gorgeous vocals, strings, and synths make TV on the Radio the unlikely creator of one of the best ballads of the year.

5. “Robocop,” Kanye West- Also unlikely is an epic, string-filled, Stephen King-referencing Kanye West track that cannot be defined by a genre. Kanye’s entire album is gold, but something about “Robocop” places it above all the rest- probably Kanye’s surprisingly strong vocals, which carry the tune throughout.

New Beyonce – Roc (Tribute To Shawn Carter)

New Beyonce Roc (Tribute To Shawn Carter) listen

About a week after Beyonce’ I Am… Sasha Fierce dropped, a few new demos leaked. “Roc,” is only one of the 60+ demos that she recorded for her third album. I can’t believe she recorded all these songs and somehow still released an album as mediocre as Sasha Fierce.

I really don’t understand why “Roc” wasn’t on the album, it’s a tribute to her man and everything. And if I remember correctly, she has a song on her new album talking about her radio?

But I’ve got it below. so you can take a listen to it and pretend it was on the album all along.

Listen to “Roc” after the jump! Continue reading →

Beyonce / Justin Timberlake / Paul Rudd – Perfection

This has to be the most I’ve laughed whilst watching SNL all season. SURE their Election Coverage was giggle-worthy, and yes, Tina Fey and Sarah Palin are twins — but this was hilarious.

I’ve always loved Paul Rudd (seriously, what’s not to love?!) and I’ve always liked Beyonce. Justin Timberlake’s campy performance was just icing on an already delicious cake.

New Beyonce – Sweet Dreams

New Beyonce Sweet Dreams listen No, this isn’t Beyonce covering the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams,” but seriously, how cool would that be? No, “Sweet Dreams,” formerly known as “Beautiful Nightmare,” is another leaked track off Beyonce’s November album I am… Sasha Fierce.

I am liking the electro-influences this track carries, it is such a refreshing change for Beyonce. I wish the album featured a bit more of this Jacques lu Cont-esque production.

Rihanna, eat your heart out. No, I love Rih Rih, and still hoping for a Rihanna / Beyonce duet. A real one, not a Breast Cancer Charity single.

Q&A Friday: Which Fourth Quarter Release Are You Most Excited About?

This week’s Q&A Friday is brought to you by Starbucks Chocolate! If you answer the questsion, you are entering yourself to win a Starbucks Chocolate Gift Package! Remember to enter your name and email address in the given fields.

2008’s album sales have been anything but great, despite this year’s big releases, like Lil Wayne’s The Carter III. But, as usual, the fourth quarter of the year is filled with some blockbuster gems. We’ve already seen what affect high-profile, old-school rockers like AC/DC (784,000 sold in first week) and Metallica (sold 490,000 in 3 days) had on the fourth-quarter album charts. It doesnt end there, with releases by Beyonce, The Killers, Kanye West, and Britney Spears this winter, we’re in for one hell of a finale for music in 2008.

Here’s a release guide for the fourth quarter most exciting albums. Continue reading →

New Beyonce – Broken-Hearted Girl

New Beyonce Broken Hearted Girl listen “Broken-Hearted Girl” is a freshly leaked track off Beyonce’s quite wonderful new album I Am…Sasha Fierce. The album is split between classic Beyonce breakbeat dancefloor anthems and sweet ballads. “Broken-Hearted Girl” falls under the latter.

I really enjoyed B’s latest single “If I Were A Boy” — a lot more than that “Single Ladies” mess. “Broken-Hearted Girl” continues to make me believe I enjoy Beyonce’s big-voice ballads a lot more than her transcending hip-hop efforts. This is a song I wouldn’t mind Top 40, Hot AC, Urban, and Urban AC radio burning out.

Leona Lewis, eat your heart out.
