Best Album of 2001

Previously: Best album of 2000 (Readers’ Choice & PMA’s Choice)

We’ve set out to find the 10 best albums of the decade, according to our readers as well as our own personal favorite. So this gives us a maximum of listing the 20 best albums of the 2000s. Though I haven’t ruled out the possibility that the Readers’ and PMA’s choices might be the same album. So we’ll play this by ear.

Like last time, I’ll list ten candidates for best album of 2001. These candidates are determined by their inclusion in various year-end lists from publications we trust, including, the Village Voice 2001 Pazz & Jop Poll, NME, The Onion, Mojo, Los Angeles Times, Spin, and Uncut. Please vote for the album you think was the best in 2001. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway).

A. Love And Theft by Bob Dylan
B. Is This It? by The Strokes
C. Amnesiac by Radiohead
D. White Blood Cells by The White Stripes
E. Vespertine by Bjork
F. Discovery by Daft Punk
G. Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós
H. The Blueprint by Jay-Z
I. Things We Lost In the Fire by Low
J. Rooty by Basement Jaxx

[rating:81/100]
“Happiness hit her like a train on a track, coming towards her stuck still no turning back,” Florence Welch whispers above the lulling ukulele of “Dog Days Are Over,” the opening track off of her first full-length release. And before anyone can say much of anything, the ropes have been let loose, the horses are in full gait, and Welch’s wild shouts and yelps lead the raging pack’s charge until there’s no turning back: “Leave all your loving, your loving behind / You cant carry it with you if you want to survive.”

July 6 marks the official UK release of Lungs, the aptly-titled debut of a fresh, exciting troupe from England known as Florence & The Machine, fronted by a witchy chanteuse that coos much sweeter and cries out much louder than the vast landscape of dull, auto-tuned drones currently on the scene. Bjork – Náttúra (Switch Remix)

Bjork Náttúra (Switch Remix) listenThe walking meme (as Hipster Runoff once put it), Bjork had her “Náttúra” remixed by M.I.A. and Santoigold producer, Switch. This is a real remix, people. Big ups to NME for this one.

It’s a breath of fresh, crisp air blowing through the stale atmosphere that has been lingering around awkwardly since Animal Collective, Erol Alkan, MSTRKRFT, and N.A.S.A. all took turns raping “Zero.”

Maybe the Yeah Yeah Yeahs should get Switch to remix “Zero.”

I’m still not settled at home, so excuse the vapid catch-up posts.

Mashups You Shouldn’t Live Without!

Mashups You Shouldnt Live Without! mp3

Well hello there my lovelies. I feel kind of blurgh getting out of bed today (though it’s well into the afternoon). Gotta love those lazy days. I need to down some Cinnamon Dolce Latte from down the street before I try to dent this massive paper I have due in oh, 3 hours.
Before I hit my responsibilities, I need some relax time. Out of habit, mostly, I automatically opened up iTunes. I was in the mood for some mashups. Here’s a collection of a few that will make your lives a lot more enjoyable.

Mixer master Icky lays it smooth with Ms. Alicia Keys, Biggie Smalls, Marvin Gaye, and to top it off our favorite beehive yielding whack-off, Amy Winehouse.

Listen to Alicia Keys vs Biggie Smalls vs Marvin Gaye vs Amy Winehouse – No Tears Dry On Their Own (YSI)

The next mashup is one of the best of the year, if not of this century. Parisian DJ Moule proves he deserves the status given to Mark Ronson, and Justice with his star-studded gem.

Listen to CSS vs Velvet Underground vs LCD Soundsystem vs Chemical Brothers – Can’t Stand Dance (YSI)

Is everyone ready for Alive 2007? It’s out in early December. In honor if Daft Punk’s nonstop sonic high, LA’s own DJ Shyboy mashes the duo up with pop’s biggest star, at the moment, Justin Timberlake. Woo hoo.

Listen to Daft Punk vs Justin Timberlake – What Goes Around The World (YSI)

To be honest, I haven’t seen or heard a better all-female mashup like the captivating track taken from Wax Audio’s Mashopolis collection.

Listen to Tori Amos vs Bjork vs PJ Harvey vs Massive Attack – Dissolved By The Water All These Years (YSI)

This next one gives me goosebumps! Such a perfect ambient cut ready for the creeping winter. Arty Fufkin gorgeously offers this tribute to France’s Air, with chilling vocals from the ever-surprising Lily Allen.

Listen to Air vs Lily Allen – All I Need’s A Smile (YSI)

To wrap things up, lets mix the indie rock sounds of PrettyMuchAmazing!’s band of the moment, Bloc Party with the scintillating Fergie. Bloc Party’s most vital track, “Banquet” is a mixer’s dream, it sounds heavenly with just about anything smeared over it, under it, beside it… you get it, right? It is most interesting to hear Fergie’s whiny ‘Fergalicious’ spread over Bloc Party’s undeniably catchy, edgy dance-riffs and slick drums. Courtesy of DJ Schmolli.

Under The Covers

Under The Covers mp3

What an exquisite feeling it is to be wrapped around safely in your bed sheets. Alone or with a significant other, its always bound to be a great experience. Truly brilliant song covers parallel their sonic linen brothers in the way they seem to soothe you. There’s certain magic in a cover, its card to place. Is it listening to your favorite tunes through someone else’s eyes? Or is it the artist covering the song that intrigues us? I feel covers always brings me closer to both artist, moreso the one singing. Its almost like we now have something in common, we both like the song being covered. Covers may help you relate to an artist more than their own music.

Our favorite Sheffield indie-rockers, Arctic Monkeys show the soft side we took pleasure in listening to on songs like “Mardy Bum” and “505″ on the Barbra Lewis cover and Leave Before The Lights Come On B-Side “Baby, I’m Yours”. Its quite a charming side from the lads. I’ve always wondered whether they were romantics or not. This song is THE perfect serenade song of all-time. Hear that guys?

MP3 | Arctic Monkeys – Baby, I’m Yours (Barbra Lewis Cover)

Doing some deep digging over at the GvB archives proved to be rewarding. This cover of Björk’s beloved “Hyperballad”, beautifully sung by Karen O, fully slipped out of my mind. I’m extremely happy I found this gem again. Karen O is simple the most fantastic indie queen of all time, her covering another musical queen is just pure, filthy fun (Yes, pure filth).

MP3 | Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Hyperballad (Björk Cover) [Acoustic]

I think everyone will agree that Secret Heart is a lovely song, and I’m sure you’re all with me when I say Feist is an incredible soloist. Put those and together and you get…

MP3 | Feist – Secret Heart (Sexsmith Cover)

The Arcade Fire is really the best band to come along since the Talking Heads stopped making sense. So, naturaly, Arcade Fire’s take on the Talking Heads’ classic tune “Naive Melody” is divine!
