Poor Tiësto. He’s got 4.5 continents at his feet, he’s headlining DJ gigs in stadiums, he’s smashed up the worldwide charts with his trance albums, but there’s that glittering jewel of America that’s always just out of reach. Springsteen and Bono can fill stadiums in the U.S. Heck, the Oakland Raiders can fill a stadium. But the kids just aren’t into trance music here.

Tiësto’s closest equivalent is David Beckham. Both have had a fantastic decade, and both are some of the biggest names in their respective fields—fields which the U.S. happens to care very little about.

Mr. Beckham tried to take over America by ditching the prestigious football clubs in Europe and coming stateside to win us over. It didn’t really work. Tiësto’s going on offense in the U.S. by getting every indie-music darling he can find to sing on his latest album, Kaleidoscope (available in the U.S. on October 6th). Will it work? After the success of Silent Alarm Remixed I think Bloc Party (pretty clearly) wrote Intimacy’s songs with the back-of-the-head idea that they were also gonna get the remix treatment. I mean, listen to the original “Mercury.” It’s full of loops, sequencer beats, and vocal cuts. It’s a pretty good idea, although the source material still needs to be strong for it to actually succeed. Continue reading →

Bloc Party – Signs/Phoenix – 1901 (sayCet Remix)

Bloc Party Signs/Phoenix 1901 (sayCet Remix) listen
I liked Bloc Party’s Intimacy. And as far as I can tell, I am in the minority. “Signs” was always one of my favorite tracks from the album, because its twinkling synths and ballad pace pulled the whole album together. It was the epitome of Intimacy. Ambient Parisian masterminds sayCet took “Signs” and made it even better. Unlike Armand Van Helden’s dance-floor remix of “Signs,” found in the remix album, Intimacy Remixed, sayCet’s remix expands on the idea Bloc Party originally ran with. They added synths that are more impressive, more starry and more twinkly.

This is a bit older, but it’s still worth saying that sayCet also remixed Phoenix’s “1901.” Catch both remixed after the jump. Continue reading →

Spank The Monkey

Spank The Monkey listen

Heartsrevolution & Spank Rock – Ultraviolence

I have quite a few years of being an electronic music fan, and the general consensus is this: dropping a Spank Rock verse or two over an illy beat like “Ultraviolence” computes only one outcome: awesomeness. Which is defined as ‘the quality of being awesome’ or the quality of being highly enjoyable, and this is it. So double KU-dos to Heartsrevolution — whose PMA-cherries I have just popped — for snapping up this nifty track for us so we can all bask in its awesomeness.

Filthy Dukes – This Rhythm

YouTube Preview Image
Speaking of popping PMA-cherries, Filthy Dukes are another fun act riddled with bouts of awesomeness. Example of said awesomeness can be seen in their bumpin’ single “This Rhythm.” Another great example is their music video for “This Rhythm” (it’s up there). The beat is a little erratic, but the bass does a fantastic job is stabilizing and unraveling the song. I can totally see this song scoring yet another student-teacher sex scene on Gossip Girl — I can’t forgive you Lonely Boy, you’re an asshole.

Oh, and before I forget, the Filthy Dukes remixed the hell out of Bloc Party’s newest single “One Month Off” — oh, how I love the original, but the Filthy Dukes did nothing but add to the song. Fantastic!

Stereogum & team9 Present… MySplice III

Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III mp3

Stereogum and team9 have teamed up for a third year in a row to bring us their MySplice III mashup compilation. The mix includes 2008 blog staples like Bloc Party, Lykke Le, of Montreal, Beck, and Crystal Castles mashed with 2008’s ineluctable pop hits (Britney Spears, Rihanna, Kanye, Katy Perry). Oh, and they through in some oldies as well (Cyndi Lauper, Guns N’ Roses, etc).

I don’t know if you guys feel it too, but I can’t help but think this is the best MySplice yet.

Stream the whole thing here, and download the mp3s below the player.
