Blogging Like It’s 1999, or, The Good and the Not So Good Under-Heard Bands…

Blogging Like Its 1999, or, The Good and the Not So Good Under Heard Bands... feature

Bryan Vaughan - papergardenrecords.com

Being a low-level blogger isn’t easy. I know it might seem like we just sit around and listen to music all day, occasionally sharing our opinions and complaining about Britney’s latest album, but it’s so much more than that. Sometimes we even complain about The Killers’ new album. I know, I know, don’t worry, I’m seeking medical attention as we speak. Alas, this is the life of the blogger who is slightly above the level of your Aunt Martha who managed to turn on her computer and figure out how to set up a blog where she talks about her unfulfilling sex life with your Uncle George (eww), but also far below the level of Pretty Much Amazing. How did I know I outranked your Aunt Martha? Well, it all started the day that the music industry decided to put me in charge (yes, I was surprised too). Continue reading →

The Thinking Man’s Take On: Hipster Runoff

The Thinking Mans Take On: Hipster Runoff feature

Words By: Chris Barth

There are typically two types of music blogs around in this here blogosphere – those that tell you what they like and those that tell you what you should like. And then there’s Hipster Runoff (aka hipsterrunoff/HRO/OMGZHRO/Carles). Authored by “Carles”, The Runoff alternates between hating on the things you like and hating on the things you don’t like, leaving an ambiguously nonexistent center – the inability to be authentically ‘alt’.

American Apparel ads litter the sidebar, flanked by animated gifs defining personal brands and bloghouse genres. The writing alternates between insightful prose and coarse post-racism, centering on image, culture, and the blog-house scene. “You” and “u” are interchangeable, “to” and “2” live side-by-side, and seriously is always spelled “srsly”. Quotation marks are applied liberally, and capitalization is reckless. Rare is the post that actually talks about music.

So maybe it’s not a music blog, per se. But it’s certainly a musically associated blog, with ties to the image of music, its fans, and its stereotypes. HRO takes people, the music they make, and the tunes they listen to, and treats them as a single entity. Its “lifestyle brand” is lifestyle branding. Continue reading →

RANT #1

RANT #1 mp3

Hey, I have a lot of news to post up later but here is some randomness I feel like posting.

First I want to thank Emily for joining PMA and becoming a Contributive Editor. Everyone say “HI EMILY WE LOVE YOU AND WE WILL WORSHIP YOU FOR EVER”. Kay, thanks. I am really excited, actually, because Emily to totally NYC-East-Side-Gangstah while I’m on the west coast poppin’ caps. I have a feeling its bout to get hot and heavy.

mp3: 2Pac – 2 of Amerikas Most Wanted

Alright I might be getting carried away, but ever since I’ve been coming to this Starbucks everyday for the passed few months, the manager tends to give me free drinks, so I’m kind of wired.

What I’ve been:

Reading Lately: I read tons of blogs — this is true. I read the majors like Stereogum, Idolator, Spinner, etc. but I do enjoy myself a good small(ish) blog. I highly recommend these “magical musical tour guides” (yes, Emily, I stole your phrase) for regular reading: TJ’s Viva La Mainstream! blog, this blog reminds me why I love alt. rock. Definitely a new favorite. Wongie’s Music World is a great blog where you can find the latest pop and indie rock single on the same homepage. Thats fucking gold in my book. Now only if it was updated more often. Get Weird Turn Pro is my newest and most addictive read. The ultimate blog for the hottest, obscure remixes around. Brugo is amazing in blog form. What else can I say, my heart goes to it. And last but not least Pop Music Kingdom, which has just gone on hiatus. I couldn’t be sadder — one of the best pop music blogs out there.

Listening to Lately: For some reason or another Fall Out Boy, Britney Spears, My Chemical Romance, and Rihanna have all found themselves on my repeat playlist on my iPod for days now — but according to iTunes this song has been played 253 times in just a few days:
