Ellie Goulding: Passion Pit, Sam Sparro & Bon Iver Covers

Ellie Goulding: Passion Pit, Sam Sparro & Bon Iver Covers coversLast week I posted Ellie Goulding’s official debut single, “Under The Sheets,” set to be released by Neon Gold. Here are a couple of covers she recorded before getting picked up by Neon Gold. Let me just say that this is a legit way to get attention. Something you working-on-it musicians ought to take note of. It could just be that I like covers, or that I’ve seen it happen many times before. But that’s just my two cents.

From what I gathered, Ellie Goulding has covered Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead,” Sam Sparro’s “Black and Gold” and Bon Iver’s “The Wolves (Act I and II).” The song selection itself speaks volumes about Ellie Goulding, not only as a musician, but also as a music fan. And I’m delighted to say that Ellie Goulding sounds just as comfortable covering one of her electro-pop peers as she sounds covering a cabin-dwelling Northwestern Wisconsinite, lo-fi layered vocals and all. Respect. Continue reading →

When I became aware that the man behind Bon Iver was working on a more experimental project called Volcano Choir, I, like many other Justin Vernon worshipers, expected “Wolves (Acts III and IV)”. What I should have paid more attention to is that Volcano Choir is not merely Justin Vernon’s new pseudonym, and this overlooked fact made listening to Unmap a more exciting and surprising experience than I had anticipated. As wonderful as the Bon Iver moniker is, the thrill of teamwork between Vernon and Wisconsin’s Collections of Colonies of Bees practically emanating from the album makes listening to Unmap an original, engaging, and altogether different experience than For Emma, Forever Ago.

I believe that above all other reasons for the endless re-playability of Bon Iver’s debut, it is his voice that keeps bringing you back. Call it a broken-down Tunde Adebimpe, a more versatile Will Oldham, or just some sad guy all alone in a cabin. However you would like to describe it, it is a striking feature. For the first thirty-three seconds of album opener, “Husks and Shells,” the hero of so many fractured youths and broken-hearted twenty-somethings is nowhere to be found, and you might convince yourself that you accidentally put on The Books. Before you can move to change the song, however, that voice appears and though what it is saying may be indecipherable, merely hearing it allows you to remember just who it is you are listening to. For thirty-three seconds you are forced into hearing Volcano Choir as a separate entity from Bon Iver. This is exactly what Volcano Choir are aiming for. Continue reading →

New Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, Thom Yorke, and Killers on ‘New Moon’

The indietastic soundtrack for the upcoming Twilight sequel has leaked, spurring a lot of excitement amongst the blogs. Excitement not misplaced, may I add. I’ve only had a short while with the soundtrack, but it’s definitely a great collection of songs; a NOW That’s What I Call Indie Music of sorts.

On the flip side, some people hate the idea of their favorite bands coming together to score a cheesy vampire romance movie. Get. Over. It. The first soundtrack sold over 2.4 million copies in the US alone and it featured tracks by Iron & Wine, The Black Ghosts, Mute Math, as well as Muse and Paramore. Maybe having our precious indie/alternative music reach the ears of millions of crazed, adolescent girls isn’t ideal, but I still think the more people that are into it, the merrier. And the cherry on top are these songs by Bon Iver & St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear and Beach House’s Victoria Legrand, Thom Yorke, and the Killers: Continue reading →

Little Red – Coca Cola

Little Red Coca Cola bootlegs
Declaring themselves “Original Doo Wop Punk” Little Red has made it big in Australia and is now setting their sights on the rest of the world. Internationally debuting their single “Coca Cola,” they’re a fun and energetic group who truly capture the 50’s 60’s old fashioned Rock and Roll (think Beach Boys) complete with backing vocals that captures the innocence of that era.

They’re a cute band with even cuter lyrics, but you won’t find anything profound here. “My one and only advice/ Is cold coca cola and Ice” are sugary lyrics that give you an equally sugary high. It’s a super catchy song that even has a fun clapping part when the music drops out (I’m quite the sucker for clap alongs).

Little Red is releasing “Coca Cola” on a limited edition 7″ due out September 21st via Neon Gold. Their album Listen To Little Red will become available November 16th.

Volcano Choir’s album leaked a few weeks ago and I’ve been enjoying it since. Expect a review up soon. In the meantime, give “Sleepymouth” a listen.

Volcano Choir – Youlogy

Volcano Choir Youlogy listen

Justin Vernon of Bon Iver teams up with Collection of Colonies of Bees, a band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in his side project, Volcano Choir. “Youlogy,” the second song of this collaboration (first being “Island, IS”) can be described as an experiment of sounds coming from all angles.

It starts off peaceful and slow with Vernon’s angelic voice (I’d say it can be compared to the sounds of Southern hymns). But listeners beware! Although you may feel at ease after you hit play, within a minute, slamming percussions disturb the serene rhythms.

If you are driving down the street people are not honking at you from every which direction, its just the song. So, I advise you, listen with caution: there are sudden jolts of hell in the churchy feel of the song that may leave you with coffee on your shirt or worse… in a car crash.

The entire Volcano Choir album, Unmap, is out September 22. Listen to “Youlogy” here Continue reading →

Volcano Choir – Island, IS

Volcano Choir Island, IS listen
Being a huge fan of Bon Iver and Justin Vernon in general, I had to give his side project Volcano Choir a listen (even though, for the most part, I’m completely against these kind of things). After listening to “Island, IS”’s four minutes, I was left with a familiar feeling. The feeling I got when I first heard Fleet Foxes’ “Sun Giant” or even “Skinny Love.”

Like I said, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon is leading Volcano Choir to music heaven, teaming up with Collections of Colonies of Bees. “Island, IS,” the first single released from the Unmap LP, doesn’t grab at you instantly, but works you slowly, shedding layer after layer with each listen, proving it has the same lasting power as the songs aforementioned.

Unmap may very well be Bon Iver’s follow-up to the ridiculously good and critically adored For Emma, Forever Ago. It will be out September 2009 on Jagjaguwar. Listen to “Island, IS” here: Continue reading →

Arcade Fire, Spoon & Bon Iver for Dark Was The Night

Arcade Fire, Spoon & Bon Iver for Dark Was The Night listen

Spoon – Well-Alright

“Well-Alright” sounds like classic, old school Spoon, with it’s thumpin’, toe-tappin’ bassline and Britt Daniel’s jerky vocal delivery. This easily makes it one of Dark Was The Night’s most fun songs. On the compilation, it follows Sufjan Steven’s 10 minute epic “You Are The Blood.” I’ve never thought of using Spoon as a pallet cleanser, but the DwtN people did and it worked out pretty great. Listen to “Well-Alright” below: Continue reading →
