Fans of Bright Eyes will find that they might not necessarily like Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. More specifically, they might find themselves highly disappointed in Outer South. For starters, seven of the album tracks aren’t even sung by Oberst. Not to mention that six out of those seven aren’t even written by him. But, those who were never quite fond of Bright Eyes might find something enjoyable with his latest endeavor. [rating:62/100] Everyone’s favorite band from Las Vegas is about to have a great spring. Not only are they headlining the desert sun music festival in California in less than three weeks, but they are also hitting up Chi-town, kicking asses and taking names @ Lollapalooza later this year. They are celebrating what will be a stellar festival season with a little EP in promotion to the terrifically unabashed alien-abducting second single off of their Day & Age (which we absolutely loved!), “Spaceman.”
The EP will include the song itself, along with a Close Captioned version of the track — I’m thinking a cross between “Spaceman” and the “Exitlude” from Sam’s Town. Thrown into the mix is Brandon Flowers’ ode to Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes’ biggest song ever, “Four Winds.” Continue reading →
Last year’s very good Conor Oberst solo album was not a one-time deal. He will be recording once more, non-Bright Eyes, for his next album, entitled Outer South. The album will drop May 5th.
This one seems like more of a collaboration with the Mystic Valley Band he tours with, as not every song was written by Oberst himself.
Personally, I’m excited. I really enjoyed Oberst’s solo debut last year (”NYC, Gone, Gone” was one of my favorite songs), and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us. Click on for his tour dates with the Mystic Valley Band. Continue reading →
Gossip Girl Music trumps 90210’s music for 3 weeks straight.
I know the second season of Chuck has officially started — but I don’t think I’ll include it in the Music Showdown. So far, Chuck seems to be having some strange, twisted love affair with Huey Lewis — something I’m not really sure I approve of. Though Chuck is an excellent show; it’s witty and pretty action packed. I recommend it to everyone.
But now on to Gossip Girl! Everyone who watches knows how essential music is to Gossip Girl. This episode features six songs, structured brilliantly and fit the scenes and emotions to a tee. Again, Gossip Girl fans show their loyalty and openness to new (almost obscure) music — Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face” has on iTunes Top 100 for over a week now. They Music Supervisors also through in some exquisite faux-Frenchie tunes by Nous Non Plus for their sexy Fashion Week show. Â
90210’s fifth episode has a fascinating music lineup and, hopefully, won’t be overshadowed by Gossip Girls’ charms. 90210 has been consistantly diverse — though maybe a tiny bit outdated. Many will note that Gossip Girl has previously played some of the same songs (”L.E.S. Artistes, I’m Not Gonna…), but 90210’s current playlist is flawless nonetheless.Â
Personally, I’m going with 90210. Gossip Girl has been considerably popular here, but 90210 has definitely proven itself with this playlist. Now it’s your turn to vote:
I’ve got a killer headache, I’m feeling extr)emely lazy/tired. Here’s some MP3s you may/mayn’t already have. I don’t feel exceptionally great about these tracks, but they aren’t horrible enough to ignore.
Watch Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes sing with Bruce Springsteen on “Thunder Road” at a benefit for Barack Obama… Pretty cool! What do you guys think? -Adam
