Sia – Under The Milky Way (The Church Cover)

Sia Under The Milky Way (The Church Cover) coversRemember when the other day, you relaxed to the calm grooves of Kelley McRae? Wasn’t that a nice feeling? Wouldn’t you want to experience that feeling again?

Sia has covered The Church’s “Under The Milky Way” and added her own, silky-smooth take on the song, complete with her ambient vocals, a sliding guitar riff, glitzy synths, and a feature in a Lincoln car commercial. A nice take on a nice song, check it out. As blog Battery In Your Leg puts it, “consider this song Zero 7′d.” Continue reading →

Free Atlas Sound Virtual 7″

Free Atlas Sound Virtual 7 covers
Deerhunter’s Badford Cox wants you to download this virtual 7″ single, released under his Atlas Sound moniker, for free on his blog. It features a fantastic cover of The Five Discs’ “Doctor” backed with a track called “The Screens.” I didn’t really get into Atlas Sound’s last album, Logos, but these tunes really hit the spot on a miserable Hump Day like today.

The Thinking Man’s Take On: Covers

I’ve long been a fan of cover songs, and I’m proud of it. I guess it stems from my embarrassing roots as a pseudo-hardcore Dave Matthews Band fan.  It began, most likely sometime in during those awkward, braces + flannel + voice-crack Middle School years, when “Dave” personally introduced me to Lyle Lovett (If I Had A Boat), Willie Nelson (Ain’t It Funny How Time Slips Away), and the great Johnny Cash (Ring Of Fire). As shameful as admitting to once being a Dave Matthews fan can be, if it led to me loving covers I’m willing to do it.  Hi my name is Chris, and I love covers.

There’s something about a good cover song that is just perfect – and difficult to capture. Some people hate covers with a passion, while others hunt them down like it’s their job. Some uphold them as worthy endeavors, others bemoan them as commercial pandering. Covers, like remixes, provide upstart musicians with a chance to prove their mettle in the context of a familiar tune. On the flip side, they allow established artists to take a step back, mess around in the studio one day, and release a song that is held under a smaller magnifying glass than usual. They exist on the fringe of the sphere of music criticism, and often seem more frivolously hobby-ish than painstakingly business-like.

Which is, of course, probably why we like them. Covers capture the essence of making music – the first time you hummed a tune that you heard on the radio, the strumming of some Nirvana chords on your first acoustic guitar, the complete freedom to do whatever you want with a song. But as with all good things, there is a method to the madness. Not all covers are created equal, and some suck pretty majorly. In my mind, here are the dos and don’ts of making a great cover:

New Vampire Weekend – Ça Plane Pour Moi (Plastic Bertrand Cover)

New Vampire Weekend Ça Plane Pour Moi (Plastic Bertrand Cover) covers

Today’s finds continue to show our favorite bands covering our favorite oldies!

Earlier: The Killers covered Cindy Lauper!

Last time we heard Vampire Weekend covering a song overseas, they tackled Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere” — earlier this week in Paris, our Ivy League punks took a stab at “Ça Plane Pour Moi,” made famous by the Belgian new wave rock god Plastic Bertrand.

As I’m preparing my “Best of 2008” year-end lists, Vampire Weekend are powerful contenders for my Best Albums, Songs, and Covers of 2008 lists. These guys don’t cease to amaze me — and I’ve seen them live 3 times in 2008! Not many acts deserve the amount of hype they get. I say Vampire Weekend deserves even more.

Download Vampire Weekend’s interpretation of “Ça Plane Pour Moi” along with a bonus, below!

Cover Tuesday 14: Justice Gone Acoustic Beck, Adele

Cover Tuesday 14: Justice Gone Acoustic Beck, Adele mp3

Unless you can pull an awesome cover off!

(This was supposed to be up on Tuesday, but well… you know)

My brain doesn’t want to cooperate with me at the moment, so I decided to wiki Tuesday and post up the first paragraph.

“Tuesday is the day of the week between Monday and Wednesday. The name comes from Middle English Twisday, from Old English Tiwes dæg, named after the Nordic god Tyr, who was the equivalent of the Roman war god Mars, and Greek god Ares.”

Thrilling. But really, here are some interesting finds of the day.

YouTube Probes Into ‘Music is My Hot Hot Sex’ Music Video
YouTube is looking into the music video from Brazilian pop group Cansei de Ser Sexy’s ‘My Hot, Hot Sex’ which as of this submission has racked up 89,750,739 views making it the most popular video ever! Problem is, far fewer viewers are leaving a recommendation after watching it, implying use of an automated, non-human method to inflate the clicks.

Grizzly Bear Front Man Crushing On JoJo

Grizzly Bear Front Man Crushing On JoJo mp3

Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear gave bandmate, Edward Droste an interesting birthday present this year. Apparently, Droste has been requesting for a JoJo cover from Rossen for quite some time. It’s really nice of Edward to share his present with us, isn’t it?

Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear – Too Little, Too Late (JoJo Cover) (YSI)

I know JoJo doesn’t really exude greatness or anything close to it, but when Dan cracks at it, it comes near-fantastic.

Rantesquely-Good Friday!

This weekend will be a blast! I have some wicked remixes to dish out tomorrow, I also have the Detour Music Fest to go to, but lets kick start this weekend in style. First off, we have Britney Spears’ OMG ROFLMAO moment of the month: THE “GIMME MORE” VIDEO LEAKED!

YouTube Preview Image

This obviously is a big deal because, well, Britney is the most discussed woman in the world — and after last month, she has a lot to prove. It’s quite a shame the video isn’t too good. That being said, I think its amazing. It’s so bad its actually good, and the best we can expect from her. It’s great to see that those housewife pole dancing classes paid off! Anyway, this is Pretty Much Amazing’s Ranterview!

Luis: the horror!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isrgoirsPaQ

well kinda.

Emily: i know

she is a true

trash bag ho

well at least she produces a trash bag ho video

keeping it consistent!

Luis: its so bad! but well i kinda like it. but im weird like that

hey — you never know, sliding up and down a pole might be really hard…

Emily: HAHA

yeah

ok i’ll give her a little credit there

a smidgen of cred

i hope u are not speaking from experience luis!

Luis: the lighting (or technocolor?) is… interesting, too

Emily: there is only so much makeup can cover

Emily: sometimes it’s good to just keep the lights off

hahaha

this is me being sympathetic of britney, readers

by calling her a trash bag ho

Luis: yes, especially when she feels like taking off her jacket? If you wanna call it that

The rest just sounds like my copy of Crackwhores Gone Wild, so I’ll spare you the drama. So basically what we learned her is that being a trash bag ho and sliding up and down a pole is hard and next time you see one, please give her/him/it some credit.

Oh and, Britney’s new album to be called Blackout (?) on Amazon?!?!?!?!

Moving on, here are some very good and totally horrible covers that have made their way into my inbox (if you have any, please email me).

mp3: KT Tunstall – I Want You Back (Jackson 5 Cover) *DOWNLOAD OR DIE!*

mp3: Elbow – One Thing (Amerie Cover) *DOWNLOAD OR DIE*

mp3: Radiohead – Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2 Cover)

mp3: Roxette – Help (Beatles Cover)

mp3: Avril Lavigne – Chop Suey (System Of A Down Cover) *OMG THIS IS SO FUNNY!*

mp3: The Dresden Dolls – Material Girl (Madonna Cover)

Also, thanks to Panda Toes (another great read) I had the chance to listen to Kanye West’s “Stronger” before it was finalized. I am SO happy Yeezy thought twice before giving us this trash:

mp3: Kanye West – Stronger (Original Version)

Speaking of Kanye, here is his latest fashionista ranting:
