Drake (ft. Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Eminem) – Forever

I will forever think of Drake as “Jimmy” from Degrassi: The Next Generation. I can’t help it. When I heard he started a rap career a few years ago I didn’t pay much attention. The only thing that might change my mind would be the support of legitimate artists.Drake has not only done this but he has also brought a king.
“Forever” is a new single for the upcoming Lebron James documentary “More Than A Game”. Drake gets the credit for the song but all four rappers each get a verse in this six minute song. Opening with Drake it is clear that this kid is not original.
He lacks any enticing kind of flow, and he attempts to come through with a delivery resembling Wayne’s without any of Wayne’s success. Kanye follows Drake after a both mediocre and cheese chorus and he doesn’t have much more success than Drake did. This beat doesn’t suit Kanye’s style or flow very well and he would be better suited out of the song entirely.
Wayne and Eminem actually thrive on this track, both of them have great delivery that save the song and seem fitting for a “Lebron James track.” If you want to hear how Eminem sounds lately or hear a good Weezy verse then this song is worth checking out. The real recommendation for this track is the trailer for Lebron’s new movie which actually looks pretty good. Listen to “Forever” here Continue reading →

Best Albums of 2000 Poll
As you know, I like lists. All kinds of lists. But my favorite are musically inclined lists. The end of the decade is approaching rather quickly, and with lists on my mind, I’ve been thinking about something I think a you all ought to be thinking about. The best albums of the 2000s. What were the first great albums of this millennium? Jeff Lind is down for the task of finding out. But he won’t do it alone.
From now up until late December, we will try to figure out what have been the best albums of the 00s, by year. This will amount to a total of 10 albums, one from each year, to keep things even. This is how it will work — for each year, Jeff and I will pick one album as our favorite, but we will also hold a poll for you all to vote on to find the PMA Readers’ choice for best album. Hopefully we will decide on two distinct albums to remember that given year.
We will be starting off with the year 2000. I have drawn up a list of 10 albums released in the year 2000 (in the US). This list was derived from various year-end lists from publications like: Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll, Pitchfork, Mojo and Metacritic. Please select the album you think was the best in 2000. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway).
A. OutKast – Stankonia
B. Radiohead – Kid A
C. Modest Mouse – The Moon And Antarctica
D. Yo La Tengo – And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
E. Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP
F. PJ Harvey – Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
G. The New Pornographers – Mass Romantic
H. Primal Scream – XTRMNTR
I. Aimee Mann – Bachelor No. 2
J. Sleater-Kinney – All Hands On The Bad One

Eminem – 3AM

[rating:6/100]
If you wanted a more serious, less Weird Al Eminem, you have him here on “3AM,” the latest track to leak from Relapse. The song is lead by a melodramatic Dr. Dre production (or a convincing wannabe), that would be great if Eminem’s melodramatic(er) lyrics didn’t drive this song straight into the ground. The song’s theatrics run so deep it brings Kanye and Lil Wayne’s terrible collaboration in “See You In My Nightmares” to mind. But then Em starts talking about tugging off to Hannah Montana and making a mess of the walls and murdering his family. Oh, and he manages to include Kim Kardashian’s ass in this song again.
Even though it takes a more dramatic angle, “3AM” is a huge piece of garbage that will be deleted as soon as I’m done writing this. Worst song of 2009. Continue reading →

Eminem – We Made You
[rating:62/100]
I think as an Eminem fan and as a hip-hop fan in general, there is a certain level of genius that I have come to expect from this man. If the first half dozen listens of “We Made You” are any indication, the first single from Relapse (what was “Crack A Bottle”? Was it really 50 Cent’s?) is missing it.
I guess I should just be happy that this isn’t another moody track about his daughter. Em is really going back to basics on Relapse, channeling bits and pieces from the Slim Shady EP and bigger chunks from his sourly disappointing Encore. At the end of the day, “We Made You,” or incognito single “Crack A Bottle” never resonate the way the rest of his endlessly fascinating catalog does. Continue reading →

Eminem Plans To Release TWO Albums in ‘09

Eminem’s first album since Encore finally has a release date: Relapse will drop on May 19th.
And in a more surprising announcement, the rapper plans to release Relapse 2 by the end of 2009! This is pretty good news for the rap world. Here’s Eminem’s statement from the press release:
“A lot of people were expecting Relapse to drop last year. I was one of them. Then Dre and I went back in the studio in September for a few days, and that turned into six months. We were on such a roll; we wound up with a ton of new music produced by Dre. Putting out Relapse 2 will let everyone get all of the best stuff.”
Sounds pretty good. Although I’m not the biggest fan of “Crack A Bottle,” I have faith in Slim Shady. Do you?

Saturday Nite Party Music Planner 2.28.09

Ha… yeah, that’s a Cobra Snake pic on PMA. **Cherry Popping Sound**
I’ve been ignoring posting most remixes in favor of artists who demand more hype than they’ve been getting, and I will continue to do so, but I thought that now that it’s officially the weekend and that most of you are heading out to some party soon, you might want to grab a few of these. Oh and I understand that it’s already past 9pm on the EAST COAST! My bad! I will make sure to post the next Saturday Night Party Music Planner a bit earlier!
Anyway, let’s start off with an incredible remix of Eminem’s infuriatingly catchy “Crack A Bottle,” yeah? Cool… Continue reading →
