Empire of the Sun – Walking On A Dream Album Review

Empire of the Sun Walking On A Dream Album Review album reviews reviews 2
[rating:73/100]
Australia is good for only two things: Kangaroos and Dannii Minogue. There is no debating this absolute fact of life. However, it seems the country can now add another element to their growing list of things that are good: Glam-rock dance-pop music. After primary trailblazing efforts by fellow Sydney artists The Presets, Cut Copy, and Sneaky Sound System made way back in ’07 and ‘08, the members of Empire of the Sun are now rapidly charting their way into a reg’lar Australian Invasion this side of the Hemisphere.

Luke Steele of The Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore of Pnau are the musical masterminds behind Empire of the Sun, a glam-dance-rock outfit on the brink of something brilliant. And judging by the rather eccentric garb the duo dons, the word “outfit” isn’t to be taken lightly–The band’s seriously bringing the Bowie like no one’s business. Don’t believe me? Take one look at their video for the first single “Walking On A Dream” and tell me you don’t feel like you’ve just slipped into a scene from Labyrinth. Continue reading →

Empire of the Sun – We The People (The Golden Filter Remix)

Empire of the Sun We The People (The Golden Filter Remix) listen
These zany looking ‘mos are Empire of the Sun, one of the many new Aussie imports that I have failed to pay proper attention to. Empire of the Sun is an spunky little duo made up of two other Aussie acts I also don’t follow closely, The Sleepy Jackson and Pnau. Note the myspace links I’m leaving… this is your cue to do some homework and get caught up. Empire of the Sun released their debut album, Walking on a Dream in October of 2008 in Australia and Feb and March elsewhere. Walking on a Dream hit stores Stateside on April 21st. Expect a review up real soon.

PMA faves, The Golden Filter took it upon themselves to remix Empire of the Sun’s great, great debut single, “We The People.” The product is a 7 minute dance epic. It’s not meant for the dance-floor per se, but any dance music fan will appreciate this, especially at the 4:50 mark. Is it too early to nominate this for Best Remix of 2009 honors? Extremely better than the original. Listen to it here Continue reading →

Saturday Nite Party Music Planner 3.07.09

Saturday Nite Party Music Planner 3.07.09 listen

So last week’s Saturday Night Nite Party Music Planner was very well received and it has inspired me to do another. It’s important to acknowledge that not all Saturday Nite parties are blasting remixes like electro-fiends. Thus, this week isn’t all about the hot remixes, like the previous Planner, but I’m zero-ing in on funky-fun synthpop.

As limiting as you might think it is, synthpop leaves your playlist wide open to a plethora of sounds. Some choices are obvious: MGMT; the first 5 tracks of Hot Fuss. There are also new acts breaking out that can inflate your playlist: La Roux; Empire of the Sun. Then there are the internet classics: Ladytron; The Knife (I suppose MGMT’s transcending presence can easily be categorized here too). And lastly, the real classics: Kraftwerk; Pet Shop Boys. I won’t get too involved or theoretical with “synthpop.” It would soil the point of this post in the first place — to help you come up with a kick ass Saturday Nite Party Playlist. pmaCAST #6: The “F*** My Life” Episode

pmaCAST #6: The F*** My Life Episode mp3

REMINDER:: WATCH THE GRAMMYS TONIGHT ON CBS 8PM ET/PT!

Have you ever tried counting how many times you say “Fuck My Life” out loud? No? You should. The results may shock you. I stopped counting after my tally hit 13. Maybe I’m just a big whiner, but a couple of days ago I created this playlist on my iPod to de-stress myself. It features some great tunes that have always made me happy and don’t remind me of anything negative — good vibes all around. It worked out pretty well.

So when Saturday night came around, I was stumped trying to come up with a theme/tracklist for today’s pmaCAST. Then I had an epiphany: I am not the only guy in the world who needs some de-stressing. My stress is nothing compared to people with real problems! So why should I lock this playlist up in the sweet confines of my iPod? I love you guys too much to do that.

There’s really nothing much to say about this week’s pmaCAST, other than it is meant to be really feel good-y. I start it up with my FAVORITE song of the moment, Feist and Ben Gibbard’s “Train Song.” I follow it up with Little Jackie’s “The World Should Revolve Around Me” and Lenka’s “The Show,” two of my favorite songs out on Top 40 radio. Then comes the Mae Shi with their Christian Bale tribute “R U Professional” — if this song doesn’t make you smile, you’re retarded. Up next are the Veronicas with their brutally stoic and heartless piece of pop majesty, “Untouched.” The next three songs are by artists you should really keep an eye on from now on: The Whitest Boy Alive, Passion Pit, and Ted & Francis. Following them is a club remix (though it doesn’t really sound like it) of Hercules & Love Affair’s “Blind” — one of 2008’s most beautifully sad anthems.

I threw in “Walking On A Dream” by Empire of the Sun (another band you should keep an eye on) right before Lily Allen’s “Fuck You,” off her new album, It’s Not Me, It’s You. This song is trill. Like super trill. I close up the podcast with a new Timid Tiger song. I know some of you are really feeling their stuff, and I’m glad. “Gadget Girls” is another song that will be featured on Timid Tiger’s new EP that will be released here pretty soon, more info on that later, I promise.

So that’s the rundown of what’s playing on this week’s pmaCAST. So tell me, what did/do you need de-stressing on? PS: Check this site out, good for a few lolz

Some Remixes on a Sunday #3

Some Remixes on a Sunday #3 mp3

Continuing this from two Sundays ago.

It’s crazy how many great mixes you can across in a single week. These 10 were my favorite finds of the week. Big thanks to Ohh! Crapp, Fancy Sounds, Sundtrak, HypeM, and probably the biggest shout out goes to the people who send me their mixes!

On the last “Some Remixes on a Sunday” post, I focused a lot on movies. Mostly the films that I wanted to see. Since then, I have seen Frost/Nixon, The Wrestler, The Reader, Defiance, and Happy-Go-Lucky. I’m still DYING to watch Rachel Getting Married. For some reason, something gets in the way of me watching it at the theater whenever I decide to go out and watch it. And the torrent is nowhere to be found, a little less than a month away from the Oscars. It’s driving me nuts! I’m a sucker for contemp dramas — yes, I’m really pissed at the way Revolutionary Road was royally dissed on the Oscar nominations — so if any of your have some sort of Rachel Getting Married hook-up, pass it along,  yeah?

I can’t really talk much, listening to this new Weezy track that’s sort of ridiculous. Weezy doing rock music is definitely not my cup of tea. More about it tomorrow. Till then, here are my favorite mixes of the week! Continue reading →
