Estelle does Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”

Estelle does Stevie Wonders Superstition covers

Estelle – Superstition (Stevie Wonder cover)

If you thought the Brothers Jonas’ little dip into Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” was semi-decent, you should probably check out Estelle’s take on it. The British songbird covered “Superstition” for the Heroes compilation, which hits North America February 24th. The compilation includes covers by Duffy, Lily Allen, TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Hot Chip. Listen to Estelle’s “Superstition” cover below: Continue reading →

Randi’s Best (and Worst) of 2008

This year has been pretty great. I started it off in Costa Rica for 10 days, and I finished it with 5 in Florida. The music wasn’t too bad either… we were introduced to great new bands, but lost legends like Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Bo Diddly, Isaac Hayes, Richard Wright, Odetta, Eartha Kitt, and George Carlin (who I know shouldn’t count under music legends but I adored him). I must say I’m really looking forward to next year’s selections (Animal Collective, Andrew Bird, Chris Cornell, Lily Allen, The Decemberists… and that’s just what’s coming out Jan – March). I’ll also be studying in London from mid-January to mid-May (& *fingers crossed* L.A. mid-August to late-December), and I can’t wait to discover hundreds of more bands across the pond!

So without further ado, here’s my favorites and least favorites of this year – songs, covers, remixes, albums, TV shows, videos & movies [in that order]. Quick sidenote: when you look at my favorite songs, make sure to factor in the songs that I put as my favorite songs of the album in my favorite albums section. I just didn’t want to repeat myself, even though after re-reading this paragraph I’m not sure if I made myself any clearer. Anyway, I loved most of this year’s music, and here’s what I loved (and hated) the most.

I like to get the worst out of the way first, like ripping off a band-aid. So without further ado…

Least Favorite Songs (Or Songs That Made Me Hate Music)

10 – Flo Rida ft Will.I.Am – In The Ayer

9 – Rihanna – Take a Bow

8 – Kid Rock – All Summer Long

7- Miley Cyrus – See You Again

6 – Britney Spears – Womanizer

5 – Katy Perry – Ur So Gay

4 – Katy Perry – Hot N Cold

3 – Lil’ Wayne – Hot Revolver

2 – Soulja Boy – Yahh

1 – Katy Perry – I Kissed a Girl

Somehow #1 and #8 on my Most-Hated list made it to #18 and #20 on Rolling Stone’s BEST Of list, which makes me more than a little sick. But I digress. Moving on…

Favorite Songs (Just in Alphabetical Order and Probably Missing Some)

New Estelle & Kanye vs The Ting Tings – Shut Up, American Boy (The Hood Internet Remix)

New Estelle & Kanye vs The Ting Tings Shut Up, American Boy (The Hood Internet Remix) mp3

The Hood Internet have just dropped their Mixtape Volume Three and it’s hotter than ever (you can download it here)! I’ve always like these guys and their style, it’s a bit smoother than other mashup DJs, like Immuzikation, and it’s not as erratic as, say, Girl Talk.

The whole mixtape is pretty damn good, but their mashup of Estelle’s “American Boy” and the Ting Tings’ “Shut Up And Let Me Go” is stellar! I just had to share it.

Download “Shut Up, American Boy” here Continue reading →

Katy Perry ‘Kissed A Girl’… and I liked it.

Katy Perry I Kissed A Girl

Unless you have been hiding under a rock somewhere for the last handful of months or so, you have been subjected to Katy Perry’s teen anti-pop songs with song titles influenced by various forms of homosexuality, menstruation, sex and other things a Pastor’s daughter shouldn’t really be singing about. Katy Perry really hit gold when ‘I Kissed A Girl,’ the ‘UR So Gay’ follow-up single, hit iTunes and Top 40 radio. Since then, with ‘I Kissed a Girl’, Perry has topped the US Singles charts, debuted in the Top 10 of the US Albums chart, and scored the 1,000th No. 1 single of the Rock Era — and yes, I like it.

I think the song is pure genius, a rather dumb side of genius, sure, but genius nonetheless. Just like any other stupidly genius songs, our favorite DJs remix and rip the song to shreds. I was wondering when a good ‘I Kissed A Girl’ remix would come across my inbox. Mr Gaspar’s brand spankin’ new Kissed A Girl remix is surely the first great remix of this essential Summer of ‘08 tune.

Katy Perry – I Kissed A Girl (MR GASPAR)
BONUS: Midfield General – Disco Sirens (MR GASPAR Remix)
Estelle ft. Kanye West – American Boy (MR GASPAR Remix)
Justice – D.A.N.C.E. (MR GASPAR’s The Lights Ignite Remix)
M.I.A. – Bucky Done Gun (MR GASPAR Remix)

Estelle Shines With John Legend and Cee-Lo

Estelle Shine

One of my favorite songbirds at the moment, Estelle, is prepping her new LP Shine for a late April release. She has been getting some press for her current single, “American Boy” with Kanye West, but I just don’t think people get how great she is. Here are a couple of tracks that have been floating around these interwebs that I found to be quite exquisite. “You Are” is Estelle’s lovely duet with John Legend, and the latter, “Pretty Please…” features vocals by Cee-Lo (from Gnarls Barkley).
