The Knife “Colouring of Pigeons”

The Knife Colouring of Pigeons mp3

Just hours after their announcement, The Knife have indeed uploaded new material to their SoundCloud account. The new track, “Colouring of Pigeons” is 11 minutes of chanting and musical bombast. Here is what SoundCloud had to say about the track:

The Knife, in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock, are to release the studio version of the opera ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’, on the 1st March 2010.

Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species’, The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme.

You can listen to and download “Colouring of Pigeons” below: Continue reading →

The Knife to Debut New Material via Soundcloud (via Twitter)

The Knife to Debut New Material via Soundcloud (via Twitter) news

How wonderful the internet is. The music streaming, hosting, discovery channel Sound Cloud (you can “drop” your music at PMA’s Dropbox here), has announced — through Twitter of course — that the Knife is to distribute “new material in the coming days”, through their service.

Yes, it’s okay that you’re drooling right now.

I’m guestimating that we will be listening to new Knife material by the weekend. Wouldn’t that just brighten up our weekend playlists? Until then, enjoy this oldie but goodie.

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009 featureArtwork by the talented and generous Adam Sarpalius.

The final list is here. We have been working on this Absolute (sarcasm) Best Songs of 2009 list all year, updating it at the end of every quarter. I was only going to have PMA’s Top 50 of the year listen, but I couldn’t narrow it down beyond the top 75. This list will represent and acknowledge some of the artists I felt had to be left out of our Best Albums of 2009 list.

As always, I upheld only one rule while making this list: a song cannot be on this list, unless it was released as a single. As a reminder, here is my definition of the word “single” — 1) A song that has been given away for free to promote an upcoming album (known as a promotional single). 2) A song that has been played on TV or the radio (two of the largest mediums of discovering new music). 3) A song with its own music video and/or EP. 4) Loophole: an album-track that has attracted enormous amounts of attention that it’s become that artist’s “calling card” of sorts.

I want to thank everyone who takes the time to leave a comment, even if its obvious that you came here through Google (PMA pops up when you google “Best Songs of 2009″). As always, don’t be shy to share your personal favorites of the year. Trust me when I tell you I didn’t go out of my way to list all of your favorite songs of the year, so if you want those songs represented, list them yourselves in the comments. I also want to thank the wonderful contributors this site has for helping me with this list. And finally, Adam Sarpalius, whose work as graced this list since July.

Now, onto the Top 75: Continue reading →

Fever Ray – Seven (The Twelves Remix), PMA Premiere

Fever Ray Seven (The Twelves Remix), PMA Premiere favorite songs

Fever Ray’s current single “Seven” is a smooth, filmy track about daydreaming in your youth… about suicide. At least that’s what I got from it. But despite it’s dark undertones, there’s no reason why “Seven” shouldn’t be a jam.

The Twelves and I shared these sentiments and I’m psyched to premiere their Halloween-like disco remix of Fever Ray’s “Seven.” Continue reading →

Röyksopp – Tricky Ricky (ft. Fever Ray) (SALEM Remix)

Quicky: [download id="328"]

SALEM remixed Royksopp’s latest single, “Tricky Tricky” featuring Fever Ray (or Karin Dreijer Andersson) for their remix competition. nightmagnets claims SALEM’s remix was their favorite of the bunch. I am inclined to agree, but the original track is pretty great on its own.

Passion Pit member, Shuttle, remixes Phoenix’s “Love Like A Sunset” and I like it better than Animal Collective’s take on it. Here are a few more remixes I like:

Fever Ray – Here Before (Vashti Bunyan cover)

Fever Ray Here Before (Vashti Bunyan cover) listen

Karin Andersson and the Subliminal Kid have teamed up to create their own rendition of Vashti Bunyan’s beautiful acoustic song “Here Before”.  Upon first listen the cover sounds like a b-side from Animal Collective’s Feels with female vocals. It took me a few spins of this track before I really started to appreciate this song.

The Subliminal Kid’s instrumentation started blending in with Karin’s voice as if she was just another instrument. Her high-pitched delivery stopped throwing the song off for me and started fitting in perfectly. Both this cover and the original, Vashti Bunyan version of “Here Before,” are great songs and worth listening to.

Fever Ray – Seven (Crookers Remix)

Fever Ray Seven (Crookers Remix) mp3

Always a fan of Crookers’ remixes, Phra and Bot once again shows us how a painless remix can result in endless fun. This time the duo gave their attention to Fever Ray’s  latest track, “Seven” from her self-titled debut album which came out in March.

In this remix, Crookers adds electronic amusement to Fever Ray’s eerie sound. You may better know and recognize Fever Ray as The Knife’s Karin Dreijer Andersson’s solo project.

The album is full of pattering drums, drawn out lyrics and mallet instruments, which makes the Crookers’ remix barrier breaking for the songs original sound. Filled with fun sounds (like the telephone ring) and dynamic beats Crookers did not disappoint.

Crookers recently launched a new website and blog, so check it out for the most recent tracks, videos and some pretty funny photos from the remix kings. Listen to their “Seven” remix here. Continue reading →
