The REAL MTV- Music on TV

And here begins yet ANOTHER weekly PMA post. Every week, I’ll be taking you through the music of 90210, Gossip Girl, and my personal favorite, Chuck.

Since all three shows are on a quick hiatus, we’re going to jump backwards in time, covering the second-to-last episodes of GG and 90210, along with the music selection of the first third of Chuck’s season two.

Let’s start with Gossip Girl. Season two’s episode twelve, “It’s A Wonderful Lie,” heavily featured tunes from a major band on the rise, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. Their most popular song, “Around the Bend,” has recently been featured in an iPod commercial. The band’s other songs aren’t quite as good, but slow jam “Hero” works well in the show’s context and “The Sun Ain’t Shining No More” is certainly good enough to gain a ton of new fans.

GG also used a song by Brit band The Metros. Their sound is nothing new, very Kooks-y, but that doesn’t mean its bad. The song, “Sexual Riot,” is a very fun track.

The episode’s best song, “Breakdown,” comes from a new-ish band called Deerheart. Kasey Truman’s heavy vocals carry the sweet and heartwarming piano-headed track. It’s perfect for background music to an important moment in your life. Or just for background music to Gossip Girl.

Flight of the Conchords Season 2 Premieres With 3 New Songs!

The highly anticipated second season of Flight of the Conchords premiered online on Wednesday. Blame my recent absence from the TV scene for the late coverage. Christmas time always messes up my blogging and TV watching game.

Anyway, if you’re unfamiliar with the Flight of the Conchords, you should really be thinking about suicide torrent the first season ASAP (I mean, buy it on iTunes) and do some wiki reading. For those who are ready for Season 2:

The first episode premiered 3 new songs. Though it’s really two new songs and a new version of “Angels.” Then again, it’s really one new song, a new version of “Angels,” and a funny jingle. Grab them below:

Flight of the Conchords – Ladies of the World

Flight of the Conchords Ladies of the World mp3

This one goes out to MFR one-hundred-percent! It was so good, I had to steal it.

Flight of the Conchords, New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk-parody duo, may not be coming back to television until next year, but those who cannot wait for new music from the rhymenoceros and the hiphopopatmus (whose lyrics are…) can take comfort. Sub Pop has just released the new single from the pair’s upcoming self-titled effort. “Ladies of the World” is the kind of faux 70s-soul ditty that happens to be the group’s forte, but there’s a little better production value here; the haunting fade-out is impressive. As for the lyrics, the band keeps on wanting to make things special for the ladies of the world, or even the hermaphodites of the world. In fact, Jemaine Clement raps that “with your lady bits/and your man bits/you must be even into you.”

In short, it’s classic Conchords material, though a bit abrupt toward the end. But not only have the band released the first single, there’s cover art and tracklisting too!

The Bank Job – This Ain’t No Ocean’s 11

the Bank Job

Despite a weak, B-rate feeling opening, The Bank Job manages to pull itself up and shape into a wildly engaging, gritty, realistic heist film that holds nothing back and does not have the comfy, playful feel of the Ocean’s films. And here’s the kick: its’ based on a true story.

Yes that’s right, it is based on the true story of the 1971 Baker Street Bank robbery in England, considered to be one of the biggest bank robberies in British history. Terry Leather (played by Jason Statham) is in a spot of trouble. He owes money to some criminal bigwig, so when an old friend Martine Love (Saffron Burrows) comes along with a proposition for him and his two mates to rob a small bank’s safety deposit box vault, he takes it. As they begin their job everything fits perfectly into place and moves along at a smooth pace…an almost too smooth pace as very quickly the little proposition spirals madly out of control with secrets and double crossing being revealed, all before coming to a surprising ending.

I was disappointed that characters were not as fleshed out and developed as I would have liked. However, Terry is done very well and I feel Jason Statham, the most underrated action movie star, has an almost Bruce Willis-type presence.

The acting and dialogue was good, Saffron Burrows gives a bristling nuanced performance, and Terry’s two mates Daniel Mays and Stephen Campbell Moore both bring a balanced energy to gang of criminals.

The Bank Job is a rough, somewhat violent heist film that does not have a fun feel to it, however as it picks up from the mediocre beginning it holds you with a raw intensity that rewards you even more once the credits roll as you read the real life aftermath of the characters.
