Gang Gang Dance – BeBey (DJ /rupture and Matt Shadetek Remix)

Ever wondered what it would sound like if a Brooklyn warehouse rave got transported into the middle of the Amazon rainforest? Well, even if you haven’t (and I fantasize daily), I can tell you it would probably sound a lot like this excellent remix of Gang Gang Dance’s “BeBey” by New York electronic maestros DJ /rupture (who received critical acclaim for his most recent mix, Uproot) and Matt Shadatek (dub producer and long time collaborator).
Keeping the original drums’ already primal texture from “Bebey”, the pair adds a tropical fruit basket of electronic flourishes that elevate the track into a genuine electro-tribal banger. Now, a steady dub pulse forms the beat, with fragmentary melodies that seem to emerge naturally from the track’s atmospheric wilderness.
The result is a sound that’s both upbeat and mysterious, and totally savage. Boys and girls, get out your glow in the dark face paint and start organizing your drum circles – the remix is the first track off the duo’s collaborative mix CD, Solar Life Raft, dropping November 11.

Gang Gang Dance – First Communion (TV On The Radio Remix)
Admittedly, I didn’t give Gang Gang Dance’s Saint Dymphna anywhere near a fair listen last year. Sure, I thought “House Jam” was a good song and all, but it never really caught on. At least not on my iPod. Revisiting Gang Gang Dance’s critical smash, I find myself enthralled in this beautiful, psychedelic, experimental world these Brooklyn natives have crafted with their album. “First Communion,” Gang Gang Dance’s new single, is a marvelous piece of work and the gutsy TV on the Radio have decided to remix (near) perfection.
TV on the Radio’s remix shows us another side of the already multifaceted “First Communion.” This new side is less ballsy and more accessible. Sounds like a negative, right? Not always. On their remix, TV on the Radio marry the energy found on their Young Liars EP and the swagger of Saint Dymphna in a perfect way. Listen to it here. Continue reading →

I got my BA in Mixtapeology at my fancy Liberal Arts School

Mix – tape – ol – o – gy: New remixes and some covers you’ve (hopefully) never heard before.
Remixes on my mind
MGMT – Kids (Pet Shop Boys Synthpop Remix): Blows Soulwax’s remix out of the water. Seriously.
SebastiAn – Momy (Erol Alkan’s Simple, Yet Effective Edit): Simple, Yet Effective indeed.
Gorillaz – Dirty Harry (Disco Villains Remix): I haven’t some some sweet DV tracks in a while.
Late Of The Pier – Bathroom Gurgle (Tronik Youth Remix): Watch out for these guys next year.
DJ Mehdi – Pocket Piano (Chewy Chocolate Cookies Remix): I don’t show much love to Dh Mehdi or Chew Choco Cookies much. Hopefully this makes up for it a little.
Britney Spears – Circus (Junior Vasquez Remix Edit): I’ve decided that “Circus” is one of the best singles of 2008, oh and this remix isn’t bad either.
Gang Gang Dance – House Jam (Hot Chip Remix): I love Hot Chip and Gang Gang Dance is quickly getting on my good side. Match made in heaven.
And some covers… Continue reading →
