Best Album of 2006 Poll

Best Albums of 00 | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09

Alright guys, we’ve made it to 2006. You know the drill by now. Because we’re approaching the not too distant past, it’s becoming harder and harder to make these top 10 lists. I feel like most of these albums are fresh in my mind (in fact, I still listen to most of them today). As always, there will be some omissions you will probably not like at all, like Bloc Party’s absence in 2005 — pretty good album, but hardly came close to Top 10-dom. This year’s omissions feel extra painful because I love the albums left out almost as much as I love the Top 10 itself. Albums left out include works by Sunset Rubdown, Band of Horses, Neko Case, Liars, Beirut, Bob Dylan, The Thermals, among others. But let’s focus on the albums that “made the cut”.

A. The Knife – Silent Shout
B. TV on the Radio – Return To Cookie Mountain
C. The Hold Steady – Boys and Girls in America
D. Clipse – Hell Hath No Fury
E. Ghostface Killah – Fishscale
F. Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere
G. Joanna Newsom – Ys
H. Arctic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not
I. The Decemberists – The Crane Wife
J. Grizzly Bear – Yellow House

Good luck finding your favorite, because we’re having the toughest time.

N.A.S.A. ft. The Cool Kids, Ghostface Killah, Scarface, and DJ AM – The Mayor

N.A.S.A. ft. The Cool Kids, Ghostface Killah, Scarface, and DJ AM The Mayor listen

Yikes, this track is hot. Here’s “The Mayor” reminding us that N.A.S.A.’s The Spirit of Apollo will kick ass and take names when it drops next month. The production value on this track is off the charts, props to N.A.S.A. and DJ AM for it. It’s siick. Though my head is still reeling from “Gifted,” and “Whachudoin?”

I wonder if any track off The Spirit of Apollo will top “Gifted” (my personal favorite N.A.S.A. so far). The album’s roster is unbelievable, but does anything beat a legitimate Kanye West, Santi White, and Lykke Li song? I don’t think so.

Grab “The Mayor” down there. Continue reading →

What To Watch Tonight, Buy Tomorrow. uncategorized

NBC is having one helluva night tonight. Make sure to catch the season finale (or fall finale?) of Chuck at 8pm. Followed by the season finale (fall finale?) of Heroes. Thats two hours of TV Magic folks.

Tomorrow make sure to pick up or rent Will & Grace Season 7 on DVD (great gift idea, by the way). Also the massive Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End hits stores tomorrow.

As for new music releases, Black Lewis’ debut Audio Day Dream or A.D.D. is out tomorrow. So is Daft Punk’s Alive 2007 live album. Then we have, quite possibly the best rap album of the year released tomorrow as well, Ghostface Killah’s The Big Doe Rehab is in stores tomorrow.

Pretty Much Amazing: The Mixtape II – Rap Acts You Are Allowed To Like

Pretty Much Amazing: The Mixtape II Rap Acts You Are Allowed To Like mp3

This mixtape is in response to the “5 Pop Acts You Are Allowed To Like” post I made earlier this week. The post was well received and I had some requests of making a rap version of it. Instead of picking 5 Rap Acts those Pitchfork fanboys are allowed to like without ruining their indie cred, here’s a mixtape of some of the great rap artists of recent times. I enjoy rap music, it great chill, angry, and mind bending music — wrapped together with a bow (err chain?) on top.

On this mixtape, you will find some Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, and others. What you WILL NOT find are those rap songs I like to call “ringtone rap”. “Ringtone crap”, rather. I’m talking about those extra catchy songs that seem to be made for simple minded people with a short attention span. You know and loath them alright; “Party Like A Rock Star”, “Crank That”, “Laffy Taffy”, “This Is Why I’m Hot”, ring any bells?

Mhm.

Now before we start this, I already admit this may be Kanye West beefed because, well I’m a hopeless Kanye sheeple, but you know what? Fuck Off :)
