It was tough trying to explain a Girl Talk concert to my parents. “It’s a guy with his laptop, putting songs together. There’s toilet paper rolls, and confetti and stuff. Basically, it’s just a giant dance party. Trust me, it’s not lame- I think.”

And thankfully, as expected, the Girl Talk live experience was far from lame. It was an epic, hour-and-a-half masterpiece of mash-ups, beach balls, sweaty hipsters, and soothing rain. The beautiful New York backdrop didn’t hurt, either. Continue reading →

Blog Wars: The Genius Playlist | Round 1, Battle 1

Hello and welcome to the first ever Blog Wars hosted by Pretty Much Amazing! This is the first of hopefully many Blog Wars to come. This particular Blog War pins bloggers and their music libraries against each other. Utilizing iTune’s “Genius Playlist” feature, 10 bloggers will go head to head and compete for your votes!

This is how it works:

I get two bloggers to create a Genius Playlist stemmed from the same song. I will publish said playlists here and you, the readers, will decide which one you like best! This is  100% winner-takes-all so choose your favorite blogger wisely.

Here is the complete list of participating blogs:

Ana’s Best Albums, Songs, and Movies of 2008

Anas Best Albums, Songs, and Movies of 2008 best of 2008

Best Album

Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago: This album will never get old for me. It’s so simple and beautiful … or simply beautiful!

Girl Talk – Feed the Animals: I love nostalgia and so much of this album was a trip down memory lane … just fused with this year’s radio hits. Plus, anyone that can mix Jay-Z with Radiohead and not fuck it up deserves some cred.

MGMT – Oracular Spectacular: Is this not on anyone’s list?

Calexico – Carried to Dust: My first taste of Calexico and I was super impressed. I love the variety of influences and styles you hear in their songs.

Lykke Li – Youth Novels: It really didn’t take much for me to get into Lykke Li. I heard “Tonight” and instantly wanted more. It’s been love ever since.

New Music: The Good, The Bad, & The Freaky

New Music: The Good, The Bad, & The Freaky uncategorized

THE GOOD: Daft Punk – Around the World (Villains’ More Cowbell DJ Edit) [YSI]

  • What can I say? I love my some Daft Punk and some cowbells. Put them together and you a flaming track with an amazing build up and an explosive climax. Definitely one of the best reworkings of ‘Around The World’ out there.

THE BAD: Peter Bjorn & John – Let’s Call It Off (Girl Talk Remix) [YSI]

  • I had a little chat with a friend of mine over this remix, and he thought I was a freak for thinking it wasn’t anything more than below average. Maybe the fact that I’ve never really warmed up to ‘Lets Call It Off’ in the first place, but that utterly annoying twinkle noise crawls under my skin like a bad case of crank bugs. If you want to dance, listen to Soulwax’s remix of LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Daft Punk Is Playing At my House‘ (ysi). If you want the ambiance, check Stars of the Lid out.

THE FREAKY: Snoop Dogg – Sexual Eruption [YSI]

  • If the song’s title wasn’t warning enough to steer clear from Snoop’s new single, maybe this will. SNOOP IS GETTING HIS T-PAIN ON. This is not only everything that is wrong with the world, but it has a equally freaky video to go with it. What the hell!
