Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 7

Alright, I’ve been really negligent of this column. I have no excuse — unless laziness counts? Anyway, I’m going to try to catch up. This time we’re looking at Episode 7’s music for both Gossip Girl and 90210 (this is NOT what aired this week, so please spare me the “corrections”).

Gossip Girl took Episode 6’s Music Showdown (surprisingly!!), but this week looks like a no brainer.

Big pics do not imply ANY BIAS whatsoever. I’m so above that.

Gossip Girl – Chuck In Real Life. Aired 10.20.08
White Apple Tree – Snowflakes
The Black Keys – Lies
Alain Whyte – City Nights
Alain Whyte – NYC Streets
Alain Whyte – Martini Lounge

The Virgins – One Week of Danger
Mildred Anderson – Hard Times
Guillemots – Sea Out

Yeah, I was staring at this list with a blank expression too. I’ve only heard of The Black Keys and the Virgins. The rest don’t ring a bell at all. But knowing Gossip Girl, all these artists will be big sometime in 2009.

90210 – Hollywood Forever. Aired 10.07.08
Sixx:A.M. – Tomorrow
Tilly and the Wall – Cacophony
Katy Perry – Hot N Cold
2am Club – Worry About You
Simone White – You May Be in the Darkness
Ingrid Michaelson – Be OK
Ananova – Feather
A-501 – I Don’t Know Why
MIKA – Any Other World

90210 is consistent and wonderfully eclectic. Vote wisely this time!

PS: Sorry, lots of YouTube links this time. It was pretty hard to track down any of these songs!

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 6

Gossip Girl beats 90210 once again and I’m quickly running out of reasons to keep this thing going.

Gossip Girl has displayed a menagerie of great music in the past — however, New Haven Can Wait’s musical playlist feels a little dull. One beautiful gem almost smothered by the selection of lackluster songs, is the Section Quartet’s arrangement of my favorite Muse song, “Time Is Running Out.”

This song alone is worth voting for Gossip Girl.

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 6 listen

Gossip Girl – New Haven Can Wait (aired 10-13-2008 to 3.34 million viewers)
The Submarines – The Wake Up Song
The Friendly Fires – White Diamonds
The Duke Spirit – Wooden Heart
The Section Quartet – Time Is Running Out [if you have the mp3 PLEASE share. I want this so bad]
(Muse – Time Is Running Out)
Jamie Blake – Dragstrip Girl (who? what? where? sorry, I could not find an mp3 to share)

90210 has always done great with mixing up the Top 40 sounds (P!nk) while still keeping its indie-cred. 90210 has also pushed a couple of artists I’ve never listed to before (Senor Happy, Natalie Walker). A well rounded list, as per usual. Maybe this time, 90210′ comprehensiveness is enough to overthrow Gossip Girl’s undying charisma.

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 6 listen

90210 – Model Behavior (aired 09-30-2008 to 4.9 million viewers)
N.E.R.D. – Windows
Mates of State – Now
P!nk – So What
CSS – Reggae All Night
Senor Happy – Got You
Keane – Spiraling
Jem -Got It Good
Natalie Walker – With You

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 5

Gossip Girl Music trumps 90210’s music for 3 weeks straight.

I know the second season of Chuck has officially started — but I don’t think I’ll include it in the Music Showdown. So far, Chuck seems to be having some strange, twisted love affair with Huey Lewis — something I’m not really sure I approve of. Though Chuck is an excellent show; it’s witty and pretty action packed. I recommend it to everyone.

But now on to Gossip Girl! Everyone who watches knows how essential music is to Gossip Girl. This episode features six songs, structured brilliantly and fit the scenes and emotions to a tee. Again, Gossip Girl fans show their loyalty and openness to new (almost obscure) music — Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face” has on iTunes Top 100 for over a week now. They Music Supervisors also through in some exquisite faux-Frenchie tunes by Nous Non Plus for their sexy Fashion Week show.

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 5 mp3

Gossip Girl - The Serena Also Rises
Lady GaGa – Poker Face
The Republic Tigers – Made Concrete
Conor Oberst – NYC Gone Gone
Duke Spirit – This Ship Was Built To Last
Phantom Planet – Raise The Dead
Nous Non Plus – Fille Atomique **Youtube link –could not find an mp3 anywhere?! it must have somehow escaped my hard drive!**

90210’s fifth episode has a fascinating music lineup and, hopefully, won’t be overshadowed by Gossip Girls’ charms. 90210 has been consistantly diverse — though maybe a tiny bit outdated. Many will note that Gossip Girl has previously played some of the same songs (”L.E.S. Artistes, I’m Not Gonna…), but 90210’s current playlist is flawless nonetheless.

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 5 mp3
90210 – Wide Awake and Dreaming
Greg Laswell – How The Day Sounds
Lykke Li – Little Bit
Annalee Ferry & Melissa Ritter – The One
Black Kids – I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You
Emiliana Torrini – Birds
Santogold – L.E.S. Artistes
Collective Soul – Hollywood

Personally, I’m going with 90210. Gossip Girl has been considerably popular here, but 90210 has definitely proven itself with this playlist. Now it’s your turn to vote:

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 4

Gossip Girl Music Playlist for Episode 3 kills 90210’s music selections.

This week we will be trying to decide which show had the best music for their fourth episode. Just to clarify, 90210’s is one episode ahead of Gossip Girl because of its 2-hour series premiere (it counted as two separate episodes). Gossip Girl’s The Ex-Files episode features tons of, what can already be considered, 2008 classics; namely, more Santogold and MGMT. There was a pleasant surprise to Gossip Girl’s indie name dropping. Both Santogold’s and MGMT’s tracks made it to iTunes Top 100 chart. By now, Santogold’s “Shove It” has fallen off, but MGMT’s “Electric Feel” is still haning on.

Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl - The Ex-Files.
Santogold – Shove It
Cloud Cult – Please Remain Calm
MGMT – Electric Feel
Chris Chavez – The Observer
The Republic Tigers – Buildings and Mountains
Nappy Roots – Good Day
The Little Ones – My Morning Tide

90210’s music selection is still substantially larger than Gossip Girl’s, but remember, it’s not about quantity but about quality. 90210’s Music Supervisors seem to lack the ability to tie the song with the scene the way Gossip Girl’s amazing music team does. Oh and who the fuck is Senor Happy? And why did they play 3 of their songs?

90210 tries to play both fields by adding the chart-topping “Disturbia” and the Hot AC winner “Don’t Believe In Love,” but do shine their Pitchdork pride with some New Pornographers.

90210 – The Bubble
Rihanna – Disturbia
Headland – The Trance
Senor Happy – How Many Ways
Lori Denae – Changes
Lori Denae – Laving
Drug Rug – Day I Die
Senor Happy – She’s New
The Courteeners – Not Nineteen…
Senor Happy – Even The Score
Dido – Don’t Believe In Love
The New Pornographers – Adventures In Solitude

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 3

Last week’s GGvs90210 Music Showdown (<- save that link for future Music Showdown posts) wasn’t as easy as it was for episode one — Gossip Girl came back HARD with indie favorites Santogold, LCD Soundsystem, and the Fratellis. This was enough to trump 90210’s waywardly mainstream choices. The final ballot was a huge 226-191, in Gossip Girl’s favor. What a turn out — almost twice as much as two weeks ago!

So far the score is 1 to 1… who will take the crown this week? Vote, vote, vote.

Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl – The Dark Night 09.15.08
Santogold – Lights Out
The 88s – It’s A Lot
The Fashion – Like Knives
Manchester Orchestra – I Can Feel A Hot One
Ne-Yo – Closer

90210

90210 – Lucky Strike 09.09.08
Vampire Weekend – A-Punk
Benji Hughes – How Many Birds
The Virgins – Hey Hey Girl
Leona Lewis – Better In Time
Katy Perry – If You Can Afford Me
The Beautiful Girls – I Thought About You
The Virgins – One Week of Danger
Intercooler – All Coming Back to Me

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 2

Episode 1’s Music Showdown closed this morning to 90210’s music selection for episode 1 KILLING Gossip Girl’s music choices for both shows’ first episodes of this season. I’ve noticed that a lot of you Gossip Girl lovers are nulling this poll because Gossip Girl played a lot of the songs 90210 played, last season. I know, I know, but the poll is comparing this season’s episodic music choices. We’re looking at these at a week-to-week basis. So, yes, the winner of Episode 1’s Music Showdown is 90210, who took a whooping 69% of the votes!

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 1

Last season, I held a Gossip Girl vs Chuck Music Showdown, but doesn’t Gossip Girl vs 90210 make much more sense? Yeah, I thought so too. Gossip Girl and 90210 both premiered on Monday (9.01) and Tuesday (9.02) respectively. Here’s the music that I managed to track down from both shows.

Gossip Girl
So far Gossip Girl’s music doesn’t really reflect on its soundtrack at all.
Gossip Girl – Summer, Kind of Wonderful 9.01.08
Shwayze – Buzzin’
Motion City Soundtrack – Fell In Love Without You (Acoustic)
Lady GaGa – Paparazzi
The Windupdeads – Reverse Of Shade
Jem – Crazy
Teyana Taylor – Google Me

90210
In my humble opinion, 90210 fuckin’ creams Gossip Girl — music-wise, GG is still mah show bitches.
90210 – We’re Not In Kansas Anymore 9.02.08
The Ting Tings – That’s Not My Name
Adele – Chasing Pavements
MGMT – Time To Pretend
Coldplay – Viva La Vida
Tilly And The Wall – Beat Control
Tilly And The Wall – Pot Kettle Black
Colby O’Donis – What You Got
The Offspring – Your Gonna Go Far, Kid

But now you get to vote! Woot.
