The Absolute Best Songs of 2009

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009 featureArtwork by the talented and generous Adam Sarpalius.

The final list is here. We have been working on this Absolute (sarcasm) Best Songs of 2009 list all year, updating it at the end of every quarter. I was only going to have PMA’s Top 50 of the year listen, but I couldn’t narrow it down beyond the top 75. This list will represent and acknowledge some of the artists I felt had to be left out of our Best Albums of 2009 list.

As always, I upheld only one rule while making this list: a song cannot be on this list, unless it was released as a single. As a reminder, here is my definition of the word “single” — 1) A song that has been given away for free to promote an upcoming album (known as a promotional single). 2) A song that has been played on TV or the radio (two of the largest mediums of discovering new music). 3) A song with its own music video and/or EP. 4) Loophole: an album-track that has attracted enormous amounts of attention that it’s become that artist’s “calling card” of sorts.

I want to thank everyone who takes the time to leave a comment, even if its obvious that you came here through Google (PMA pops up when you google “Best Songs of 2009″). As always, don’t be shy to share your personal favorites of the year. Trust me when I tell you I didn’t go out of my way to list all of your favorite songs of the year, so if you want those songs represented, list them yourselves in the comments. I also want to thank the wonderful contributors this site has for helping me with this list. And finally, Adam Sarpalius, whose work as graced this list since July.

Now, onto the Top 75: Continue reading →

pmaCAST #20: There’s Something Living In These Lines

pmaCAST #20: Theres Something Living In These Lines musicI watched Gigantic for the first time tonight. It was an odd movie, for sure, but I was delighted to see the movie’s last few seconds scored by Animal Collective’s “Did You See The Words?”

It was the perfect odd-ball song to close an odd-ball film. What was better yet was the music binge I went on right after the credits closed. These songs are what make up this twentieth episode of the pmaCAST. Hopefully you’ll find the track list fitting of this milestone episode.

Pretty Much Perfect (A Mixtape)

Pretty Much Perfect (A Mixtape) mp3Words by Scott Curtis.

When PMA asked me to create a mix for them I immediately started putting something together that was all encompassing, a mix to show what Living Ears was about in the past, the present and where I see the future of the site going. I put together a playlist that had just over 40 songs. As I started playing through it what quickly stood out was the number of incredibly strong tracks from the past 3 months or so that stood up to much of what I was pulling from the past. Personal favorites from Panda Bear, The Streets, !!!, LCD Soundsystem and No Age were quickly cut and the list whittled down to a really strong 17.

These are 17 songs –all from this year, some still unreleased– that represent where I think the future of the site, and popular independent music are headed. From woozy dubstep, chillwave, and melodic lofi to pure pop, clouded bloops+bleeps+noise before closing with one of the most direct and beautiful pieces of straightforward indie rock I’ve heard all year.

It’s only a mix but it’s probably my favorite thing I’ve done as a blogger. Much of this music is still relatively undiscovered even by the big blogs and sites out there and I think that most of these tracks are going to be stepping stones for bigger movements that will emerge from their respective genres.

Put on a pair of really good headphones, turn it up and get lost.

Long Live Hot Girls (A Mixtape)

Long Live Hot Girls (A Mixtape) mp3

Words and Artwork by Dan McGrath (aka Knatterjak)

Well, its that time of year again. The wonderful summer weather is quickly becoming a thing of the past, everyday I find myself stuck behind a school bus in an Irish Catholic neighborhood, and another hope crushing, tear inducing, life raping season of football is right around the corner (I am a Buffalo Bills fan). But all is well… because nothing can take away the 2 most important things this world has to offer: Great Music and Hot Girls. I dedicate this mix to the wonderful women and titillating tunes that get me through my workday… which consists of tons weed whacking and mowing lawns. Thank heavens for the 200k education I just finished…

All kidding aside, I actually love the fall and am in no way the pessimistic male chauvinist bastard that wrote the paragraph above… although my job really does suck.

Enjoy. Continue reading →

Gotye – Learnalilgivinanlovin’ (Passion Pit Remix)

Gotye Learnalilgivinanlovin (Passion Pit Remix) mp3
I already told you how excited I am that Gotye is finally getting a US release for his magnificent “Learnalilgivinanlovin’” via Neon Gold. I also mentioned that Passion Pit remixed the A-side track, and now I have that remix to share.

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had any new Passion Pit to share, and their return coupled with Gotye is just too good to be true. To borrow a phrase, it’s what dreams are made of. Deep down, it’s still “Learnalilgivinanlovin’” but playing dress up with Passion Pit’s makeup. The original’s old school, Motown feel is replaced with echoing synths and a vibrant bassline. Typical Passion Pit nosh, for sure, but it’s why we love them.

You can buy Learnalilgivinanlovin’ from the Neon Gold Shop or Puregroove, but hurry, this will sell out! Listen to the remix here: Continue reading →

Learnalilgivinanlovin’

Learnalilgivinanlovin favorite songs
Gotye. I’ve been urged to blog about Wally De Backer’s music for a while now. Don’t you dare ask me why I haven’t. Maybe I thought you weren’t ready for this? Maybe I simply kept forgetting to?  Well whatever the reason, Gotye’s music has remained, for the most part, a nicely kept secret. Last year, this tune, “Learnalilgivinanlovin’” was released in various parts of the world, but garnered very little exposure for the young Australian artist.

Luckily, Backer will receive his very first US release with a 7″ single for “Learnalilgivinanlovin’.” It will be backed by a remixed by Passion Pit. Hopefully that will certainly entice people to go out and listen to Gotye. It will be released via Neon Gold on August 17th. It only costs $5. Buy it here.
