5 Best GRAMMY Performances 2009

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the GRAMMYs were last night. It was a great show, one of the best GRAMMY Ceremonies in years. This year we enjoyed great performances from Radiohead, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Robert Plant & Allison Krauss, U2, M.I.A., Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, T.I., Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder… the list goes on and on. The performances were so good that I just had to list my 5 favorite performances of the night! Don’t forget to tell me about your favorite performances of the night in the comments.

HM: Adele & Sugarland – What I’d Give / Chasing Pavements

YouTube Preview Image
I may not be the biggest country fan around, but I think Jennifer Nettles’ vocal delivery was fantastic, and you know what, the song isn’t so bad either. It’s great to hear beautifully sung music, regardless of genre. And Adele’s followup performance was amazing too. Highlight: Sugarland joining Adele on stage towards the end of “Chasing Pavements.”

M.I.A. is having an awesome 2009, 3 weeks in.

M.I.A. is having an awesome 2009, 3 weeks in. interesting reads

Maya Arulpragasam (better known as M.I.A.) is having an already stellar 2009. Good for her. Let’s look at the things she has to look forward to in February.

For one thing, she’s pregnant and her baby is due February 8th! As if that weren’t exciting enough, on that night (GRAMMY night), Ms. Arulpragasam is nominated for two GRAMMYs: one for Record of the Year for “Paper Planes,” and another for Best Rap Song for “Swagga Like Us” — under the technicality that the song samples “Paper Planes” and she wrote “Paper Planes,” and in the GRAMMY panel’s eyes, that’s the exact same thing.

That’s pretty huge stuff. For some women, having a child is the highest honor. For some musicians, winning a GRAMMY (or two) is the highest honor. She’s doing pretty damn good as a female musician if you look at it that way. Now what if this lauded female musician mother/GRAMMY-winner wins an Oscar? That would be pretty fucking crazy, no?

That could very well be M.I.A. come February 22nd because — you guessed it — she’s nominated for an OSCAR for her fantastic work in “O Saya,” one of a few M.I.A. songs featured on the annoyingly overrated Slumdog Millionaire. If she were to win, she’d share the Oscar with A.R. Rahman, who nominated for another Oscar for Best Original Score for “Slumdog.”

Is M.I.A. friggen awesome, or what? Continue reading →

The Thinking Man’s Take On: The 2008 GRAMMY Nominations

The Thinking Mans Take On: The 2008 GRAMMY Nominations feature

Well, the 2008 Grammy Nominations were released yesterday, and now begins the not-so-tense waiting period until we remember one of the following:

a) the Grammys are on February 8, 2009.

b) the Grammys were on February 8, 2009.

c) Grammy’s birthday is in March.

Quick, name the only artist to ever win the “Big Four” Grammy Award in the same year – Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. If you guessed Christopher Cross, you’re right! And you should go outside or something because you probably don’t get out enough. In fact, if you can name any songs by Christopher Cross (best known for his contribution to the Arthur soundtrack), you should be about 50% proud and 50% embarrassed.

FACTBOMB: Lenny Kravitz once won 4 consecutive Grammys for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance

The point is that historically The Grammys have been out of touch, behind the times, or generally irrelevant. Like really out of touch. Like didn’t nominate a hip hop artist for best album until 1997 out of touch. Like Tonic was nominated for Best Rock Album in 2003 out of touch. Like U2’s “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb” won Album, Song, Rock Song, and Rock Performance of the year in 2006 out of touch. That last one, if you’re counting, is four (4) more award than U2 deserved that year.

My personal experience with the Grammys, for most of my life, has consisted of this: “Ladies and Gentlemen, here to sing our national anthem…Columbia Recording Artist…and 8 time GRAMMY AWARD WINNER….Doug McDoogle!” Or something generally along those lines. While the Grammys (which are handed out by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) are supposedly the Oscars of Music, they don’t pack quite the same punch.

FACTBOMB: Three 6 Mafia won an Oscar. They are Academy Award winners.

The Thinking Mans Take On: The 2008 GRAMMY Nominations feature

What was I saying? Oh yes, the Grammys haven’t historically been as classy and distinguished as the Oscars. But they’re slowly catching up to the times. While the Grammy nomination process probably originally resembled the selection of a new pope – that is to say, old white dudes shrouded in secrecy – it now probably is less archaic. It’s probably more like old white dudes shrouded in secrecy with a couple people nearby saying things like “Those Jonas Brothers sure are popular with my 12 year old” and “Don’t forget to include some country music!”

Let’s check out this selection process in action, as we look at the 51st Annual Grammy Nominations for albums that were released between Oct. 1, 2006 and Sept. 30, 2007, applauding the National Recording Academy of Science of Recordings Academy for good selections, mocking them for poor choices, and pointing out missed opportunities where I see fit.

As you may know, there are a whopping 110 categories in this year’s Grammys (yes, seriously) so I’m going to randomly pick and choose categories I like and nominations that are noteworthy.

Kanye West- 808s and Heartbreak Album Review

Kanye West 808s and Heartbreak Album Review album reviews reviews 2

This is how I was introduced to Kanye West. At the time, the rising star wowed America with this chill-inducing rendition of “Jesus Walks.” Kanye showed off his extreme passion, massive ambition, and theatrical flair. He was a fresh face in his genre, and he was something special.

Fast-forward three and a half years. West is the number one name in music. He is hailed as one of the best, if not the best rapper in the world. But when he premieres his new song, “Love Lockdown,” at the MTV Music Video awards, something strange happens about two minutes in. That’s when people realize that the self-proclaimed “voice of the generation” isn’t rapping, but singing. The entire song.

All artists shift styles at some point in their life. It’s part of the creative process! But as gutsy as Kanye’s move was, it still had many people wondering: “Where are you, Yeezy?”

As more of 808s and Heartbreak leaked, however, people began to see what the legendary rapper/producer was doing- making original, catchy, and ultimately great music. While it still pains me that Kanye isn’t quite as good of a singer as he sounds on the tracks (due to the wonders of Auto-Tune), I’ve gotten over it and have come to respect his incredible ear for beats, hooks, and production value. GRAMMY Noms & Predictions

GRAMMY Noms & Predictions mp3

So last week, the 50th Annual GRAMMY Nominees were announced in the wee hours of the morning in Hollywood. The GRAMMYs will air Sunday, February 2007 on CBS. I am not always a big fan of their nomination choices but I am usually a faithful GRAMMY fanboy.
