The Best Pop Songs of the 2000s

I was thinking about this a lot the other night, and I think its time to being the great debate of the Best Pop Song of the 00s over to PMA. Before everyone starts mouthing off some obscure Scandinavian pop songs, here are a few rules.

1. The song had to have achieved notoriety from 2000-present.
2. It pains me to say this, but the song has to have been a nationwide (or worldwide) hit. The bigger, the better, in most cases.

Why? Because pop music is supposed to be universal. Everyone is supposed to enjoy it and love it and everyone can’t love something if they’ve never heard it before. Simple as that.

3. Only one song per artist. Pick their best single, if that helps.

I have a few submissions in mind. Read on to find out Continue reading →

New No Doubt – Stand and Deliver

New No Doubt Stand and Deliver covers
“Stand” and Deliver” is the a newly recorded cover No Doubt gave to all of the fans who bought tickets via the presale (and effectively giving Ticketmaster the finger). I was one of the sheeple that bought No Doubt tickets early, by the way. “Stand and Deliver” was recorded FOR Gossip Girl, because the mp3 came tagged with “From the television show Gossip Girl.” So make sure to catch No Doubt perform the Adam and the Ants cover on Gossip Girl on its season finale in May.

I heard this cover wasn’t very good. ALL LIES! It’s fantastic. It does sound like No Doubt are returning to their Orange County roots with “Stand and Deliver” — and maybe their entire new album, who knows. “Stand and Deliver” would fit perfectly in their self titled album. It also would not be out of place in Tragic Kingdom. This is a good look No Doubt. Though I still think going in the “It’s My Life” direction would be a bit more fun. Listen to “Stand and Deliver” after the jump. Continue reading →

New Lady GaGa – Vanity

New Lady GaGa Vanity listen

Lady GaGa is really having me rethink my “Bonus Track” policy that I have around here. “Vanity” is found on the UK version of Lady GaGa’s debut The Fame. The delicious pop tune runs a few seconds short of 3 minutes, but the music speaks volumes.

Lady GaGa is seriously giving Katy Perry a run for her money on “Vanity”. The new song is somewhat reminiscent of Katy’s “Hot N’ Cold” mega-single, while continually reminding us of the No Doubt swagger Gwen Stefani used to possess — you know, before she went all “Hollaback Girl” on us.

Stuart Price aka Jacques lu Cont aka The Thin White Duke aka Paper Faces aka Man With Guitar

Stuart Price aka Jacques lu Cont aka The Thin White Duke aka Paper Faces aka Man With Guitar mp3Stuart Price (aka Jacques lu Cont, aka The Thin White Duke, aka Paper Faces, aka Man With Guitar) is the epitome of Electronica (well a close tie with Daftr Punk — at least) and a genius. As an amazing producer (Madonna’s Confessions On A Dance Floor) and DJ, Stuart Price has the uncanny ability to churn out amazing remixes of any song he lays fingers on. It really does not matter what genre of song it comes from, give it to Stuart and it becomes eargasmic perfection. Sample his stunning remixes of The Killer’s Mr.Brightside, Coldplay’s Talk, Gwen Stefani’s What Are You Waiting For?, and Depeche Mode’s A Pain That I’m Used To.

It’s not just that Stuart Price’s work is a summons to the dancefloor — which it is, he does it with so much style, it sets him apart. Price has an amazing ear and eye for what make makes his remixes trippy. He struts with unique and universal sounds that have made him famous world wide. Too bad electronica is so obscure in America. Maybe some Stuart Price production should jump into Top 40 Radio — take that Timbaland.

Videogasm: The Arcade Fire Rock ACL; Gwen Stefani, and Kanye West @ Emmy’s

The Arcade Fire brought the house down on September 15th, albeit their showcase was a bit Neon Bible ladened; a great show nonetheless — which is what we expect from these epic Montreal geniuses. Below is a video of The Fire playing “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)”:

Here is the new Gwen Stefani music video. Unfortunately this isn’t THE Gwen Stefani video we’re all waiting for. I was under the impression she was to release “Early Winter” or “Wonderful Life” as a single next, but alas, girlfriend had other plans. So here is he video for “Now That You Got It”:

This is a fine, though unusual video, but I am still baffled and upset that she chose this song as her next single instead of “Early Winter” or “Wonderful Life”, which are one of the best songs on The Sweet Escape. GET IT TOGETHER GWEN!

Last night on the Emmys, Kanye West got in on some Don’t Forget The Lyrics action with Rainn Wilson and Lyrics host Wayne Brady while presenting the award for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. But the joke was on the self-obsessed star who forgot his lyrics. Ha-ha-ha:
