In every single review I’ve read of Hockey’s debut full-length, Mind Chaos, countless other bands are referenced as influences. LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes, MGMT, Black Kids, Billy Joel, Vampire Weekend, Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, Rod Stewart (don’t know what those last two critics were smoking). I love all of those artists, and at times I love Hockey. But right now, the band sounds too mashed-up, “too fake” on this first record to be labeled a great group just yet.

That doesn’t mean Hockey hasn’t created a really good album. Like any debut is supposed to do, Chaos shows off the band’s strengths, its weaknesses, and its room for improvement. At times, tracks veer off into laziness, in other instances they build towards a non-existent hook or chorus. But overall, Mind Chaos is a solid debut record that demonstrates Hockey’s potential- a truly fun listen and introduction to a growing new band. Continue reading →

Hockey – Too Fake, Song Away (Music Video)

I am loving this fresh wave of MGMT-esque music! Hockey seem to be the front-runners, garnering some sweet publicity all year long. I even hear their song, “Too Fake” on JC Penny commercials now. And man, is that a fun song.

Hockey – Too Fake
from Mind Chaos (out October 6th)

There’s a RAC remix of “Too Fake” that I’m itching to post, but I’m not allowed to… so let’s hope it gets cleared soon. It’s fantastic.

Until then, we’ve got a new Hockey music video to watch of their new single, “Song Away.”

You Oughtta Know: Hockey

You Oughtta Know: Hockey listen

No, not the sport. The awesome, funky, LCD Soundsystem-esque band that is making their way through the blogosphere. That Hockey.

Hockey is hailed as a synth-laden version of The Strokes, or perhaps more accurately by Pinglewood.com: “if Julian Casablancas and James Murphy had met in 80s New York and become inseparable buddies, dragging each other in and out of CBGBs and Studio 54.”

The band is likely to be one of 2009’s big breakout artists, and their great single “Too Fake” shows off immense versatility. Starting out with a new-wave, electro opening and building to a catchy, poppy chorus, “Fake” should be on repeat for all PMA readers this week. Let me know what you think- a YSI download link is posted below.
