pmaCAST #21: Looking Better, Shining Brighter Than You Do
The twenty-first episode of the pmaCAST is here. The new episode runs a little bit over an hour and fifteen minutes and features some of my favorite songs of the moment. I’m pretty confident that you all will like this one.

Hot Chip – Take It In, New Album
Earlier today, I mentioned that we’ll be listening to a new Hot Chip album in February of next year, and now I can report that the new album will be called One Life Stand (amazing title) and it will hit shelves February 9th in the US and on the 8th in the UK.
According to Pitchfork via NME, One Life Stand features drumming from Charles Hayward of experimental 1970s group This Heat as well as Leo Taylor of London indie band the Invisible.
What’s better yet is that we can now listen to the first track off One Life Stand, “Take It In,” thanks to the ever-generous Pitchfork and Lala.com. Listen to it after the jump: Continue reading →

pmaCAST #20: There’s Something Living In These Lines
I watched Gigantic for the first time tonight. It was an odd movie, for sure, but I was delighted to see the movie’s last few seconds scored by Animal Collective’s “Did You See The Words?”
It was the perfect odd-ball song to close an odd-ball film. What was better yet was the music binge I went on right after the credits closed. These songs are what make up this twentieth episode of the pmaCAST. Hopefully you’ll find the track list fitting of this milestone episode.

Music From Gossip Girl: Season 3, Episode 3

Last night’s episode of Gossip Girl was my favorite so far of the season, but I was pretty slow on the musical side of things. That is not to say that the song choices were bad. On the contrary, actually. Last night’s episode included a really great cover of Hot Chip’s “Ready For The Floor” by Lissy Trullie, as well as one of my favorite tracks of 2009. Simian Mobile Disco offer up their sophomore studio album with an array of of color, texture and sound. Temporary Pleasure is a veritable smorgasbord. Just as stylized and hook-heavy as you please, with cameos galore. Known for working with artists the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and Peaches, James Ford bolsters his production skills to ’staggering’ heights here.
At first you’re all geared up for some sort of explosion. There’s this infinitesimal build-up that keeps going until you’re squirming in your seat, ready for the pay-off. Remember LCD Soundsystem’s “Get Innocuous”? There’s this incredible lead into such an luxuriant crescendo of disco dance rock that it literally explodes into first rate club boogie (that word’s disagreeable silliness aside, it means what it means) that has you moving non-stop in appreciation of it’s utter danceability. And Temporary Pleasures’ opening track “Cream Team” deceptively primes you to anticipate the equal possibility for such an occurrence. So you’re ready to be up out of your damn seat. Fischerspooner – We Are Electric (Hot Chip Remix)
I fucking adore Hot Chip. That is a simple fact of mine. Their last album, Made In The Dark, was one of my 2008 favorites and their covers of Vampire Weekend’s “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” and Joy Division’s “Transmission” got plenty of spins from me. Their take on Fischerspooner’s “We Are Electric,” however, isn’t really blowing me away. It actually pained me to go through the entire 8 minutes and 15 seconds of monotonous drivel.
I might as well comment on how stylistically different this remix is, compared to other Hot Chip recordings. I wish I could say that they have taken off in a new, interesting direction, but sadly, this new direction is not interesting and is ultimately a disservice to both Hot Chip and Fischerspooner.
Hopefully next time around we can get an interesting offering from Hot Chip because this isn’t it. Continue reading →

Hot Chip – Transmission (Joy Division Cover)
Is it just me or is Hot Chip churning out some fantastic covers lately? Their grown-up electronic rendition of Vampire Weekend’s “Cape Cod…” with Peter Gabriel was one of the finer moments in cover-song history, and now their take on Joy Devision’s devious “Transmission.”
In the hands of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddar (Hot Chip in the studio), Ian Curtis’ jam goes to a whole other, retro level. This cover — along with many other fantastic covers — will be featured on Warchild’s Heroes compilation. The MP3 and the tracklisting below: Continue reading →
