Hot Chip – Transmission (Joy Division Cover)

Hot Chip Transmission (Joy Division Cover) covers

Is it just me or is Hot Chip churning out some fantastic covers lately? Their grown-up electronic rendition of Vampire Weekend’s “Cape Cod…” with Peter Gabriel was one of the finer moments in cover-song history, and now their take on Joy Devision’s devious “Transmission.”

In the hands of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddar (Hot Chip in the studio), Ian Curtis’ jam goes to a whole other, retro level. This cover — along with many other fantastic covers — will be featured on Warchild’s Heroes compilation. The MP3 and the tracklisting below: Continue reading →

Pretty Much Amazing’s Best Albums of 2008

Pretty Much Amazings Best Albums of 2008 best of 2008
2008 was quite a year for music. Maybe it wasn’t as great as 2007, but we made due with what we had. I didn’t connect with an album in 2008 the way I connected with In Rainbows, or Neon Bible, or Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Those were albums that had me falling in love with every track listen after listen. However, the following twenty albums are my favorite albums of 2008 and ranking them was somewhat painful/futile — which is why we came to the conclusion that numbering year-end lists was completely sacrilegious and spat in the face of music lists everywhere.

After deciding to trash the option of numbering this list, I went with dividing my Top 20 albums into 3 categories: Big Albums by Big Names, Newcomers, and Eye Openers. Are you ready? Here are Pretty Much Amazing’s 20 Favorite Albums of 2008.

Leave your top albums in the comments, if you’d like! We’d love to hear them! Oh and if you have a blog and have posted a year end list, drop the link in the comments as well!

Hot Chip with Robert Wyatt and Geese – We’re Looking For A Lot Of Love (Geese Mix)

Hot Chip with Robert Wyatt and Geese We’re Looking For A Lot Of Love (Geese Mix) listen

Hot Chip played Santa this year and dropped off a wonderful EP full of re-imagined tracks with friends Robert Wyatt and Geese.

Here’s what Hot Chip had to say:

Hot Chip have posted up the second of the free tracks from the new EP with Robert Wyatt & Geese, ‘We’re Looking For A Lot Of Love’. Chosen from the band’s album ‘Made In The Dark’ by Robert Wyatt and re-recorded together in London earlier this year, Hot Chip’s old friends and collaborators Geese (aka Emma and Vince from The Elysian Quartet) also lent a hand to create this stunning new arrangement.”

Hot Chip have assembled a lovingly put together little present in time for Christmas involving the services of none other than the godfather of the experimental psych-prog world, Robert Wyatt and kindred musical spirits Geese. Long recognised as one of the pioneers of avant-jazz rock, from his beginnings as a member of Soft Machine and through his collaborations with Scritti Politti and Syd Barrett, Robert Wyatt brings his quietly magical touch to 3 songs personally chosen from Hot Chip’s 2008 album “Made in the Dark”. The result – as recorded at Gallery Studios earlier this year – are several mutations of songs that are as delicate and whimsical as they are adventurous and distinctive.

Meanwhile, Hot Chip’s old friends and collaborators Geese (aka Emma and Vince from The Elysian Quartet) also lent a hand, reworking the new, Robert Wyatt- assisted “We’re Looking…” while completely overhauling “One Pure Thought” from a straightahead floor shaker into something stranger, dreamier, but no less lovely. All in all, a deliciously unpredictable collaboration made in quirk-pop heaven.

Quirk-pop heaven it is!

I got my BA in Mixtapeology at my fancy Liberal Arts School

I got my BA in Mixtapeology at my fancy Liberal Arts School covers

Mixtapeology: New remixes and some covers you’ve (hopefully) never heard before.

Remixes on my mind
MGMT – Kids (Pet Shop Boys Synthpop Remix): Blows Soulwax’s remix out of the water. Seriously.
SebastiAn – Momy (Erol Alkan’s Simple, Yet Effective Edit): Simple, Yet Effective indeed.
Gorillaz – Dirty Harry (Disco Villains Remix): I haven’t some some sweet DV tracks in a while.
Late Of The Pier – Bathroom Gurgle (Tronik Youth Remix): Watch out for these guys next year.
DJ Mehdi – Pocket Piano (Chewy Chocolate Cookies Remix): I don’t show much love to Dh Mehdi or Chew Choco Cookies much. Hopefully this makes up for it a little.
Britney Spears – Circus (Junior Vasquez Remix Edit): I’ve decided that “Circus” is one of the best singles of 2008, oh and this remix isn’t bad either.
Gang Gang Dance – House Jam (Hot Chip Remix): I love Hot Chip and Gang Gang Dance is quickly getting on my good side. Match made in heaven.

And some covers… Continue reading →

New Hot Chip & Peter Gabriel – Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa (Vampire Weekend Cover)

New Hot Chip & Peter Gabriel Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa (Vampire Weekend Cover) covers

Man, its the end of the year already and some amazing covers keep popping up. Earlier this week we had Lily Allen and Ladyhawke cover Britney’s “Womanizer” and now we have Hot Chip and PETER GABRIEL (!!) covering Vampire Weekend’s cherry-popping “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.” These covers are seriously going to change shit up in my Favorite Covers of 2008 list.

Where exactly did this cover come from? Apparently not from Hot Chip’s upcoming EP (due out next Monday/Tuesday), but from VW’s “Cape Cod…” single. My super-reliable sources tell me that “the cover was recorded over the summer at Gabriel’s Real World studios in Box, Wiltshire. It was supposed to be featured on the single for ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa’ but didn’t make it. The song is featured on XL’s 08-09 Sampler.” Cool deal.

This song could have easily found its place in Hot Chip’s Made in the Dark. Could have easily been a highlight. But I guess I’m okay with it being my favorite cover of the year.

New Hot Chip (ft. Robert Wyatt) – Made in the Dark

New Hot Chip (ft. Robert Wyatt) Made in the Dark listen

Did you hear that the incredible Hot Chip are releasing a new EP on December 22nd will Robert Wyatt and Goose creatively titled With Robert Wyatt and Goose EP?

This reinterpretation of “Made in the Dark” our first taste of the EP. It’s a staggering piece of work if you ask me. Don’t get me wrong, I love Hot Chip’s technolicious loudness, but listening to their sweet and smoldering ballads is just as momentous — a trick no mere dance act was supposed to master.

Listen to the new “Made in the Dark” after the jump Continue reading →

CONTEST: Hot Chip @ The Wiltern in LA (2 Tickets)

CONTEST: Hot Chip @ The Wiltern in LA (2 Tickets) mp3
I’m tight with a few people in the industry and they’re constantly hooking me up with tickets. With one friend, I scored a couple of tickets for Hot Chip’s Sunday night show at the Wiltern in LA on September 21st. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to catch this show. Bummer!

Instead of passing the tix along, I figured I might as well give them away on here. So, if you live in the Los Angeles area (I know a lot of you do!), please leave a comment down here before 6PM Sunday evening. Make sure you leave your email address on the provided field. I will pick a winner at 6PM Sunday and email them with the info.

Knock yourselves out!
