Lupe Fiasco – Solar Midnite (ft. Japanese Cartoon)

Lupe Fiasco Solar Midnite (ft. Japanese Cartoon) listen
Surprised to hear that Lupe’s new song, “Solar Midnite” is used in the upcoming Twilight movie? Like we joked before, the track list is amazing (Lykke Li, Killers, and Thom Yorke?!), possibly even soundtrack of the year worthy, so… who wouldn’t want to get a piece?!

Lupe “collaborates” with “his band,” Japanese Cartoon, to create an interesting and fitting track for the film. It doesn’t sound like your typical Lupe track, but it is well matched to the basic characteristics of Japanese Cartoon.  He composed the track after viewing an early, unfinished screening of film.  He said he was trying to pull together the elements of the chaotic love story, which builds among the characters and translate it into a great song. I think the rock side of Lupe stands strong and is very enjoyable.

“Solar Midnite” appears as a bonus track for the New Moon soundtrack, which is now available via iTunes. Listen to it here: Continue reading →

Japanese Cartoon – Crowd Participation / In the Jaws of the Lords of Death

Japanese Cartoon Crowd Participation / In the Jaws of the Lords of Death listen

As far as creative side-projects go, Lupe Fiasco takes the cake. Japanese Cartoon is not another annoying Strokes or Jack White side band, but something that will keep Lupe Fiasco with us, because he is still planning to “retire” after LupEND drops sometime in the OH-9 (the oh so insightful Confusion pointed out that “retirement” is the new “rehab”). The little tastes Japanese Cartoon has offered us thus far have been noteworthy and somewhat satifying, but nothing mind-blowing, something that I use often to discribe Lupe Fiasco’s music. At least until now… Continue reading →

Japanese Cartoon – Firing Squad

Japanese Cartoon Firing Squad listen

I’ve wondered if I was the only person who is taking Japanese Cartoon seriously and as a legitimate musical project. I probably am.

Lupe Fiasco or not, I hope to hear an album full of Japanese Cartoon tracks. Luckily a couple of PMA readers dropped this new track, “Firing Squad” onto my gmail inbox. It’s actually pretty good. Not as good as Heirplanes or AMY, but it still keeps me excited and hopeful for a Japanese Cartoon LP (please?). Continue reading →

Lupe Fiasco’s New Post Punk/Alternative/Indie Band Japanese Cartoon

Lupe Fiascos New Post Punk/Alternative/Indie Band Japanese Cartoon listen

We always knew that Lupe Fiasco was mad crazy, but we just didn’t know how crazy he was, until now. Japanese Cartoon is Lupe Fiasco’s ridiculously cool side project (I’m not a fan of those, but for Lupe, I’ll make an exception). Should I say second side project? Does anyone know what happened to CRS?

The self-described Post Punk/Alternative/Indie Japanese Cartoon features a Lupe Fiasco putting on a freaky faux-British accent. This is a fun listen before we get to listen to LupEND. Holler back.

Catch two Japanese Cartoon tracks below:
