Mick Boogie & Terry Urban: 2009 GRAMMY Nominees Remixed

Mick Boogie & Terry Urban: 2009 GRAMMY Nominees Remixed mp3
via Mick’s blog:

Ever wonder how Kanye would sound rapping on Kenna’s song? What if The Jonas Brothers sang over some hiphop breakbeats? What if Thom Yorke sang on Lupe’s “Superstar?” What if Sara Bareilles bought a sampler and not a piano? The list goes on… but the answers can be found here.

I usually enjoy Mick Boogie’s and Terry Urban’s periodical mixtapes, but when they get on one together, magic ensues. This one also hits close to home — I love the GRAMMYs, no matter how flawed they obviously are. Anyway, a lot of these are jammin’. The tracklist + highlights + full download links after the jump! Cover Tuesday 18: On Wednesday!

Cover Tuesday 16 covers
Unless you can pull an awesome cover off!

Not even the calendar can stop me from posting some covers! Tuesday was really busy for me + no planning = Cover Tuesday on Wednesday.

But I’m sure you don’t mind.

Coldplay – When You Were Young (The Killers cover): The mp3 does have a really long live introduction (sort of), but the cover is worth it. I do know the quality will bug some people, but this was the best I could get my hands on. If you’ve got better, please share.

Fiona Apple – Across the Universe (The Beatles cover): “Across the Universe” is arguably the best Beatles’ song ever. Hell… it’s arguably best song ever written. This female vocalist spin on it is a very nice touch. Though, I’m still a fan of Jim Sturgess‘ theatrical version.

Franz Ferdinand – Mis-Shapes (Pulp cover): Franz Ferdinand have a knack to cover songs how the Arctic Monkeys cover songs: banging on a guitar whilst hollering post-punkesque vocals.

Kasabian – Out of Space (The Prodigy cover): It’s been a long while since I’ve even thought about Kasabian. File this cover under the “Better Than The Original” category.

John Mayer – Kid A (Radiohead cover): I won’t front. I do enjoy myself some John Mayer tunes. He has a great voice and, depending on my mood, his tunes can be real tear-jerkers. But it’s hard not to do that Juno “WHOA! DREAM BIG” thing when you listen to this cover. Maybe tackling “Kid A” wasn’t a good idea. Stick to the easy stuff — “Creep,” anyone?

Fall Out Boy ft John Mayer – Beat It

Fall Out Boy ft John Mayer Beat It mp3

This little gem made its way into thousands of Myspace profiles a couple days ago. This is probably the first single off of Fall Out Boy’s first ever live album titled ****, take that †!

Anyway, the Pete Wentz says any four letter word should make due. So Pretty Much Amazing officially names this album… wait for it… Shit! Yay. Oh, and the cover is pretty brilliant too. Patrick Stump sure can holler. I am actually enjoying this a lot, blows all of Infinity on High out of the fucking water.

I’m not sure where John Mayer comes in though?

Dead Links Suck, Dont They

Pretty Much Amazing

Just to clear the air. I am totally against reuploading mp3s after the links expire and/or are deleted, but this passed week has been kind of crazy in terms of finding a new host. Thus, the links to some mp3s either never worked for more than a few hours or didn’t last the night. It’s really just a bandwidth issue. Pretty Much Amazing has simple overgrown YouSendIt or Google Pages. zShare seems to work, and SaveFile does too. I am also going to venture into the world of DivShare and MediaFire, but I am keen on keeping up with elbo.ws and hypem, and some services just don’t aggregate properly. With that said, I am going to post up the songs that went to mp3 heaven way to quickly.

The Lost Cover Post

Pop Art

A beautiful pop art photo I found…Looks like I’ve neglected my cover-fans a lot more than I thought I did. Its true, I missed Cover Tuesdays twice now. And I’ve received the email backlash to back it up. So here is a little sorry present I whipped up just now. I am almost positive that I’ve posted these before, but they’re some of my favorites, and looking though my gmail inbox, they are some of you’re favorites too.

I am especially fond of John Mayer’s take on Radiohead’s Kid A. Machinae Supremacy retired “Gimme More” from its previous pole dancing infamy and turned it into something worthy of Reznor’s envy.

John Mayer – Kid A (Radiohead Cover)
Duffy – Ready For The Floor (Hot Chip cover)
Arctic Monkeys – Curtains Close/Rockafella Skank (Fatboy Slim cover)
Arcade Fire – Age Of Consent (New Order Cover)

Amy Winehouse – Monkey Man (Toots and Maytal cover)
The Hold Steady – Running Against the Wind (Bob Seger Cover)
Franz Ferdinand – All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem cover)
Plain White T’s – Umbrella (Rihanna cover)

Album Review: Alicia Keys – As I Am

Album Review: Alicia Keys As I Am mp3

86%

From the moment Alicia Keys dropped onto the music scene in 2001, one thing was clear, the girl could write a killer hook. With a few simple words stretched out to blasting piano underscored intensity, “I keep on fallin, in and out of love with you,” Alicia Keys roared onto radio with an album (“Songs in A Minor”) that would garner her both critical praise and a slew of awards. It also seems to be the only real lyrical idea she will ever write, but that’s not as bad as it sounds.

With 2004’s follow up “The Diary of Alicia Keys,” we saw the singer amp up her game enlisting some of the hottest producers to bring her musical vision to life. A prodigious piano player, all the songs acted as a showcase for her searing, raw vocals, and roaming hands.
With so much time spent at the piano, it seems like Key’s has been able to experience little other than love, as is evidenced in the thirty (roughly) songs she has written to date.

Next week brings the release of her eagerly anticipated album “As I Am,” and it’s both strikingly different than her past two albums and strikingly similar. Those seeking out more of Keys’ piano driven ballads about heartbreak, newfound love, and euphoric romance will be pleased to know that Keys has delivered fourteen songs with her signature killer hooks that seem radio friendly and original at the same time.

Fortunately, for her slightly repetitive songwriting skills, Keys is blessed with one of the best voices in the pop/R&B world. Anyone who has heard the incredible first single, “No One,” where Keys practically screams her devotion to a man that will never be matched, you realize that even when she’s pushing the limits of her vocal range (which she is doing to beautiful effect in this single) she’s fully in command.

What makes her music accessible is the simple stream of emotions that she writes with. Her choruses often consist of a string of three or four words, repeated with different notes and they send shivers through your body. It doesn’t seem to matter that she employs slews of clichés because the way she performs them is breathtaking and she fully commits. This is most true on “Sure Looks Good To Me” which finds her singing with defiance, “Don’t rain on my parade.” There’s nothing lyrically original in this statement, but through some magic she makes it feel like you are hearing it for the first time.

At other places on the CD, she is more lyrically successful. The absolutely stellar “Lesson Learned,” about a tumultuous relationship which she finally put an end to, is an incredible collaboration between her and fellow singer/songwriter John Mayer. He croons “It’s
alright, it’s alright, it’s alright,” over slamming drums while Keys laments that “yes, I was burned, but I called it a lesson learned.” It’s a slow building explosion of a song that evokes a
soulful feeling of some of Keys’ influences. At its most scorching moment Keys wails out that “You don’t know what the struggles for/ Falling down ain’t falling down if you don’t cry when you hit the floor/ It’s called a past/ because I’m getting past/ and I ain’t nothing like I was before/ You oughtta see me now.”

Of course this song is sandwiched between the songs “I Need You,” and “Wreckless Love,” which seem to be the antithesis to “Lesson Learned.” It’s all about love with Keys but this time the key (pun not intended but I’ll take it) difference is the production of the album. On “Diary,” the only drum driven song was the Timbaland produced “Heartburn” but this album finds pulsing and invigorating drums pounding throughout.

Even though I would love to see Keys branch out into uncharted territory with her subject matter, there’s no denying that what she does, she does well. Clichéd? At times, yes. Enjoyable? Always. Pick up her album when it hits stores next Tuesday. Review by Matthew Murphy

John Mayer Is Really On Something/Feeding The Machine II

John Mayer Is Really On Something/Feeding The Machine II mp3John Mayer is really funny! — go figure. I would have never guessed that the guy who sobbed ” When you’re dreaming with a broken heart/The giving up is the hardest part/She takes you in with her crying eyes/Then all at once you have to say goodbye/Wondering could you stay my love?/Will you wake up by my side? /No she can’t, ’cause she’s gone..” would have a sense of humor. John Mayer has started a “mlog” (a blog about meals). Way to be different John! I mean Kanye is repping his fashionista ways on his blog, Rosie is bitching on hers, of course telling your fans about your eating habits is the next logical choice. Here is John’s reasoning for starting his mlog.
Americans are celebrity obsessed, and that obsession shows no signs of stopping. So in an effort to stay on the cutting edge of digital technology and pop culture, I’ve decided to make the most personal facet of my life public.
My meals.
If I’m correct, America – no, the world – will want to see this.

Now that’s funny. What’s funnier is this: This past Monday, John had waffles. With blueberries and strawberries. Surely there is a hidden meaning behind this choice. Could he be back with Jessica Simpson? Blueberries are blue, and John Mayer plays the blues. Strawberries are delicious, just like Jess. I think the message is pretty clear: John Mayer ordered waffles, therefore he’s back with Jessica Simpson. And he’s about to cover her with butter, cut her up into pieces, eat half of her, and put the other half in a doggie bag to save for later. You heard it here first people, John Mayer is a perverted serial killer who loves waffles! Quick, somebody call the police! (TomZ)

John continues to rant about the Public speaking… or something.

The public has spoken, and the response is overwhelming; you love my meals and want to see more!!
I want to thank everyone for making this such an instant hit. Of all the blogs I’ve ever posted, my mlog has created the most stir. You don’t argue with this kind of success. You just strap in and enjoy the ride!!

I agree with you there John, You should strap in and enjoy the ride of success. That’s kind of what I hope to do with Feeding The Machine. I am happy to say that FTM was welcomed warmly by all of our readers. I am thankful for all your encouraging comments and emails. Here are some more MP3s that have been requested. Keep them coming!

And if you want a cheap travel deal, don’t fret since they fall into the category of cheap cruises. The stay is comparable to that of las vegas resorts you will also save on the airline tickets.
