This Weeks Touring News musicI don’t usually post tour dates on the blog, but I figured a lot of you might be interested in what cool shows have been announced in your area for the near future. I know I usually rummage the internet for such information.

Lenny Kravitz – Let Love Rule 2009 (Justice Remix)

Lenny Kravitz Let Love Rule 2009 (Justice Remix) mp3
[rating:67/100]
The world was stunned when Justice’s remix of U2’s “Get On Your Boots” hit the interwebs. Though I’m not really sure why. It’s no secret that Justice are big pop music fans. Gaspard and Xavier have remixed Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in the past, remember? However, I have to admit that their latest remixing move sort of left me in minor shock; why is Justice remixing someone as irrelevant as Lenny Kravitz?

The fact that Team Kravitz hired Justice to remix the titular track off of Kravitz’s 20th Anniversary re-release of, Let Love Rule, lead me to believe Justice were handed a nice fat check (or cheque) for this remix.

On the “Let Love Rule 2009″ remix, we find a Justice that is still riding hard on the creative tour de force they unleashed on their era-defining album, , in 2007. But like most artists who don’t stray from the path they paved a few years back (hello Timbaland, Justin Timberlake), things start to seem typical, repetitive, and hell, even become a musical typecast.

I’m a big fan of Justice and , but I think I’m ready for something new. Can we finally say this without lying? R.I.P. -era. You had a real great run. Let’s finish it off with this remix. Continue reading →

U2 – Get On Your Boots (Justice Remix)

U2 Get On Your Boots (Justice Remix) mp3
[rating:88/100]

Justice took one of my ten favorite singles of 2008 so far (no, that was not an April Fools joke, I love “Boots,” don’t lose all respect for me please), and made it into something completely new, original, different, and awesome.

Rather than taking “Boots” and turning it into a club-banger, Justice instead chose to change the song’s dynamic, adding soulful piano, horns, and looped Bono. So now, instead of being an awkward-groovy-rock-Radiohead imitation by Bono and company, “Get On Your Boots” is a funkadelic, toe-tapping, head-bopping show-stopper. Continue reading →

Some Remixes on a Sunday #3

Some Remixes on a Sunday #3 mp3

Continuing this from two Sundays ago.

It’s crazy how many great mixes you can across in a single week. These 10 were my favorite finds of the week. Big thanks to Ohh! Crapp, Fancy Sounds, Sundtrak, HypeM, and probably the biggest shout out goes to the people who send me their mixes!

On the last “Some Remixes on a Sunday” post, I focused a lot on movies. Mostly the films that I wanted to see. Since then, I have seen Frost/Nixon, The Wrestler, The Reader, Defiance, and Happy-Go-Lucky. I’m still DYING to watch Rachel Getting Married. For some reason, something gets in the way of me watching it at the theater whenever I decide to go out and watch it. And the torrent is nowhere to be found, a little less than a month away from the Oscars. It’s driving me nuts! I’m a sucker for contemp dramas — yes, I’m really pissed at the way Revolutionary Road was royally dissed on the Oscar nominations — so if any of your have some sort of Rachel Getting Married hook-up, pass it along,  yeah?

I can’t really talk much, listening to this new Weezy track that’s sort of ridiculous. Weezy doing rock music is definitely not my cup of tea. More about it tomorrow. Till then, here are my favorite mixes of the week! Continue reading →

Dark Was The Night

Dark Was The Night is a 2-disc, 31-track piece of work where some of our favorite acts (Feist, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, The Decemberists, Spoon, Arcade Fire, Cat Power and Sufjan Stevens to name a few) hope to raise money and awareness for HIV/AIDS. Even if you don’t usually buy albums (I think that should be your New Years resolution), make an effort to purchase this one. It’s full of amazing, beautiful music and it helps a worthy cause.

On February 17th, Dark Was The Night will be available in double CD, triple vinyl, and download — all proceeds / royalties are going to the Red Hot Organization, an AIDS and HIV charitable organization that raises money and awareness for projects and research. Naturally, I’m interested in making sure as many people as possible go out and buy this, and posting any files from this compilation may hinder that goal. But you can preview some of the songs on the Dark Was The Night Myspace page. They will be streaming one new song a day (started last Thursday), so check back regularly to listen to the music.

The tracklisting is below: Continue reading →

Blog Wars: The Genius Playlist | Round 2, Battle 1

On the last battle of Round 1, Music Is Art took PMA on. They were a worthy adversary — one that almost got us beat! But in the end, PMA won with 51% of the votes (by the smallest margin yet!). Now, now, I won’t say much because I’m sure plenty of people are ready to tell me that PMA won because of the “homefield advantage.” Maybe so, eh?

But what’s done is done so let’s move one the the Second Round of this Blog War! To remind you all, the blogs that made it were: Sheena Beaston, We All Want Someone, Nialler9, The Culture of Me, and Pretty Much Amazing. Because Sheena Beaston beat Pigeons and Planes by the biggest margin (26%), she get’s a freebie this round and is automatically placed in the finals. The last battle will be a Winner-Takes-All style threesome — the winner will be our Blog Champion.

Also trying to secure a spot in the finals are Nialler9 and The Culture of Me who are both in this rumble, fighting to the tune of “Voyager” by Daft Punk. A classic, indeed. Enough talk, let’s bring the Genius Playlists out. Continue reading →

What’s Going On?

Whats Going On? gigs

In NY: The Bowery Ballroom is the place to be this week, with shows from The Rosebuds (Friday night), FRIGHTENED RABBIT (!) (Saturday night), and Department of Eagles (Monday night), and ANIMAL COLLECTIVE (Next Wednesday night). Granted, the Bowery is kind of the place to be every week.

But don’t think the Bowery is your only option this week! You’ve got Animal Collective playing their first NYC show of ‘09 at the Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom on Tuesday. Also Tuesday, party to the music of Fucked Up at the Market Hotel. And don’t forget about the best show of the week, next Wednesday (January 21st) at the Bell House. Recap-rockers Previously On Lost will be playing their odes to Jack, Sawyer, Locke, etc. at their SEASON PREMIERE PARTY for the greatest television show on air. You’ll watch the two hour premiere event first, and then finish it off with an awesome concert.

And, the FLEET FOXES are playing SNL this week! How awesome is that?

Some Remixes on a Sunday #2

Some Remixes on a Sunday #2 mp3

Continuing this from last Sunday.

Listen up. I’ve got a whole lotta new shizz for you and your granny. No, I really do. I’m just completely swamped. If I had a bit more time this week, almost every single one of these remixes would have seen its own post. But, alas, life doesn’t work out that way. Maybe some of you can help me?

Beyond normal life stuff, I have been pretty busy watching movies. Award season is upon us and I am still severely behind. While most of the theaters around here are playing what I want to see, I am having scheduling issues. My big priorities this week are: Rachel Getting Married, The Wrestler, and Gran Torino. I say that in confidence because I already wasted this weekend watching some pretty shitty guilty pleasure movies.

Yes. I watched Bride Wars and The Unborn this weekend, instead of catching up on films I know I would enjoy. Bride Wars wasn’t too bad — I didn’t expect much in the first place, but The Unborn was just insulting. Hopefully now I’ve had my fill of cheap Hollywood escapism. I need to focus on cheap-yet-affluent escapist movies now. But before I throw away $100 this week in movies (and movie-related expenses), have any of you seen Rachel Getting Married, The Wrestler, or Gran Torino? Are either of those films that I may not need to watch at the theater? Would the comfort of my own home suffice? Can you point me in the right direction of the torrent?

Damn, and I still have to watch The Reader, I’ve Loved You So Long, Frost/Nixon, Defiance, Che, and Good.

Now, my mom raised me right. I won’t ask for something without giving you another something in return. Here are 10 Remixes. But before you listen… isn’t that a cool pic up there?

Kings Of Leon – Use Somebody (Dolby Anol Remix)

I’m not going to comment on every remix, but this first one is just splendid. I can’t begin to tell you how much I like this one. Great use of this particularly great KOL track. Continue reading →
