I’ve done Top Song lists for April and May of 2009 using the Hype Machine’s Favorite Tracks system. Earlier today, while stuck in traffic, I was hit my inspiration — I could easily use PMA’s very own raw mp3 download data to formulate these lists. With this data, I can even make these lists a weekly occurrence and over .zip’s and everything. I felt this was an overall good idea.
So every Friday I will post up the 7 most downloaded tracks on Pretty Much Amazing and offer a .zip file as well. So here they are, this week’s top 7.

Read on for download links and a .zip Continue reading →
I sort of like this single. I really like this remix, Calvin Harris never disappoints.

Wow…SXSW has yet again put an incredible lineup together for their festival this year. The talent includes, and is in no way limited to:
Peter Bjorn and John, Bishop Allen, The Tallest Man On Earth, Andrew Bird, Miniature Tigers, Grizzly Bear, Katy Perry, Ra Ra Riot, Little Boots, N.A.S.A., Miniature Tigers, Delta Spirit, The Airborne Toxic Event, Josiah Leming, Passion Pit, Department of Eagles, Princeton, The Hold Steady, The Morning Benders, White Lies, Friendly Fires, Your Vegas, Titus Andronicus, The Break And Repair Method, The Duke Spirit, The Republic Tigers, The Decemberists…
And really, who knows who and how many I missed. It truly is an endless lineup of unbelievable bands and individuals, and you should absolutely make an effort to get yourself to this festival. Let PMA know who exactly you plan on seeing, and what buzz bands playing SXSW you want the world to know about.
Check out the lineup, broken down both alphabetically and day-by-day here. Thanks to Stereogum for the tip. The festival takes place from March 18-March 22.

this dashing young man is Sam Sparro. the end.
Here’s a great little cover Katy Perry did for a new love song covers compilation for Valentines Day, Sweethearts 2009. Katy Perry covered Sam Sparro’s epic, GRAMMY nominated “Black and Gold,” — and once again — she did a terrific job!
Katy Perry is no stranger from covering beloved indie-dance tracks and transforming them to great, great acoustic wonders. Disagree with me like you will, but I still think Katy’s cover of MGMT’s “Electric Feel” was fantastic. You can’t deny that this girl can sing, even if she sings about kissing girls — which isn’t necessarily a band thing anyway.
Just like Lady GaGa, I really want to her an album full of tracks just like these. Better yet, maybe an acoustic Lady GaGa/Katy Perry collaboration album. Hmm. While I daydream about popstars with actual singing ability picking up a guitar/getting on the keys while singing, you go listen to this cover: Continue reading →

I don’t normally post mixes here on PMA, but maybe you guys are interested in a few of the ones I get in my inbox. Starters (who I’ve blogged about a couple of times before, sent over their “Don’t Be Scared” DJ mix and I dig it!

I’ve long been a fan of cover songs, and I’m proud of it. I guess it stems from my embarrassing roots as a pseudo-hardcore Dave Matthews Band fan.  It began, most likely sometime in during those awkward, braces + flannel + voice-crack Middle School years, when “Dave” personally introduced me to Lyle Lovett (If I Had A Boat), Willie Nelson (Ain’t It Funny How Time Slips Away), and the great Johnny Cash (Ring Of Fire). As shameful as admitting to once being a Dave Matthews fan can be, if it led to me loving covers I’m willing to do it.  Hi my name is Chris, and I love covers.
There’s something about a good cover song that is just perfect – and difficult to capture. Some people hate covers with a passion, while others hunt them down like it’s their job. Some uphold them as worthy endeavors, others bemoan them as commercial pandering. Covers, like remixes, provide upstart musicians with a chance to prove their mettle in the context of a familiar tune. On the flip side, they allow established artists to take a step back, mess around in the studio one day, and release a song that is held under a smaller magnifying glass than usual. They exist on the fringe of the sphere of music criticism, and often seem more frivolously hobby-ish than painstakingly business-like.
Which is, of course, probably why we like them. Covers capture the essence of making music – the first time you hummed a tune that you heard on the radio, the strumming of some Nirvana chords on your first acoustic guitar, the complete freedom to do whatever you want with a song. But as with all good things, there is a method to the madness. Not all covers are created equal, and some suck pretty majorly. In my mind, here are the dos and don’ts of making a great cover:

Stereogum and team9 have teamed up for a third year in a row to bring us their MySplice III mashup compilation. The mix includes 2008 blog staples like Bloc Party, Lykke Le, of Montreal, Beck, and Crystal Castles mashed with 2008’s ineluctable pop hits (Britney Spears, Rihanna, Kanye, Katy Perry). Oh, and they through in some oldies as well (Cyndi Lauper, Guns N’ Roses, etc).
I don’t know if you guys feel it too, but I can’t help but think this is the best MySplice yet.
