Blog Wars: The Genius Playlist | Round 1, Battle 4

Earlier this week, Ear Farm and The Culture of Me took on Lil Wayne’s “Dr. Carter” in two surprisingly different Genius Playlists. The Culture of Me’s versatile, somewhat alternative (Cool Kids, Beastie Boys, Jurassic 5, Lupe Fiasco, etc) playlist came on top with 60% of the votes! I’m sorry Ear Farm, but the voters have booted you out!

On this fourth battle, we’re pairing up Arjan Writes and Nialler9. This time I’ve ask my friends to create a genius playlist on the most confusing song of 2008: “Human.” I was really excited to see what these two came up with for the Killers’ jam. What didn’t surprise me was that neither of their playlists disappoint. These two lists are the best we’ve seen yet, and the hardest vote so far.

Read on to vote for your favorite Genius Playlist! Remember: Vote or Die! Continue reading →

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 6

Gossip Girl beats 90210 once again and I’m quickly running out of reasons to keep this thing going.

Gossip Girl has displayed a menagerie of great music in the past — however, New Haven Can Wait’s musical playlist feels a little dull. One beautiful gem almost smothered by the selection of lackluster songs, is the Section Quartet’s arrangement of my favorite Muse song, “Time Is Running Out.”

This song alone is worth voting for Gossip Girl.

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 6 listen

Gossip Girl – New Haven Can Wait (aired 10-13-2008 to 3.34 million viewers)
The Submarines – The Wake Up Song
The Friendly Fires – White Diamonds
The Duke Spirit – Wooden Heart
The Section Quartet – Time Is Running Out [if you have the mp3 PLEASE share. I want this so bad]
(Muse – Time Is Running Out)
Jamie Blake – Dragstrip Girl (who? what? where? sorry, I could not find an mp3 to share)

90210 has always done great with mixing up the Top 40 sounds (P!nk) while still keeping its indie-cred. 90210 has also pushed a couple of artists I’ve never listed to before (Senor Happy, Natalie Walker). A well rounded list, as per usual. Maybe this time, 90210′ comprehensiveness is enough to overthrow Gossip Girl’s undying charisma.

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 6 listen

90210 – Model Behavior (aired 09-30-2008 to 4.9 million viewers)
N.E.R.D. – Windows
Mates of State – Now
P!nk – So What
CSS – Reggae All Night
Senor Happy – Got You
Keane – Spiraling
Jem -Got It Good
Natalie Walker – With You

New Keane – The Lovers Are Losing (CSS Remix)

New Keane The Lovers Are Losing (CSS Remix) mp3Now that CSS are done remixing themselves, they’ve decided to hit Keane’s underwhelming “The Lovers Are Losing” and transformed it to something that that deserves my otherworldly fascination. I really didn’t like Keane’s latest effort (I gave them three shots to grow on me — FAIL!) but this is just a breathe of fresh air.

Another cool tid bit, CSS came to the realization that their remixes make the regular blog rounds, so they decided to give then one away, officially.

New Keane – Love Is The End

New Keane Love Is The End listen
Yet ANOTHER Keane track leaks (via DILT), though this one is not as Killers-fantastic as the other two (we’ll just pretend we never heard “Better Than This”). This newly leaked “Love Is The End” sounds nothing like what I thought Keane 2008 would sound like. It’s actually a bit reminiscent of Keane’s Hopes and Fears or Under The Iron Sea. This could turn out to be an old b-side… or a shockingly great album.

New Keane – Better Than This

Keane Better Than This

In less than a couple of weeks, the internet has unearthed three new Keane tracks. This last one to leak, “Better Than This,” continues to channel Brandon Flowers’ more annoying serenades on Hot Fuss. There are two sides of Hot Fuss, the half that is extraordinary and mind-blowing, and the half that is bitterly underwhelming. This new drip from Keane’s out-of-control leaky faucet sadly belongs in the latter category. This is truly not the Keane we all know and love — and I was even starting to love the “Spiraling” and “The Lovers Are Losing” Keane; “Better Than This” brings it down several notches.

Hey Keane! You can do so much better than this!

I Love the irony in this song.

New Keane – The Lovers Are Losing

Keane
The official “next single” off of Keane’s forthcoming album, “The Lovers Are Losing” was played in British radio recently, and PMA reader Joseph has just sent me the radio rip. The quality isn’t that great, but the song itself sounds like a gem.

Like their free digital single “Spiraling,” “The Lovers Are Losing” still reminds me of the Killers (cira-Hot Fuss, namely “Smile Like You Mean It“), which is definitely not a bad thing. Stream/download the song below:

New Keane – Spiralling

New Keane Spiralling listen

Hi, I am Pretty Much Amazing, and this is the first Keane song I like.

Keane – Spiralling

“Spiralling” is set to be the first single off of Keane’s third album, Perfect Symmetry, out October 13th of this year. I’ve never been big with Keane’s music, but as far as I understand, “Spiralling” is a real break through in developing their sound/catalog. I give them kudos for the catchy 80’s synth and snappy snares. Fun song, indeed. Download this radio rip and sway along. OR watch the YouTube video below!

Album Review – Radio 1: Established 1967

Album Review Radio 1: Established 1967 mp3

On September 30, 1967, the BBC launched a new popular music radio station to compete with the illegal pirate stations that had a monopoly on playing new music.

Since that time, Radio 1 has become a world famous name and to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the station asked 40 of today’s biggest acts to cover 40 tracks from each year of its history. This album is the result.

But while there’s certainly much to admire in the number, diversity and size of the acts that agreed to take part, the ensuing compilation also proves to be something of a hit-and-miss affair.

For everything that’s good, there’s also plenty that’s bad – with some artists seemingly ill-suited to the songs they’ve been asked to cover.

The Streets, for instance, completely murder Elton John’s Your Song, Editors commit a similar crime against The Cure’s Lullaby and Mika and Armand Van Helden deserve a life sentence for the hatchet job they’ve done on The Police’s Can’t Stand Losing You.

But there are positives – and some very strong cover versions among the 40 tracks on offer that just about make it a compilation worth owning, particularly if you’ve been a lifelong fan of the radio station.

Keane’s version of Queen and David Bowie’s Under Pressure stands out as a firm favourite, as does the Kaiser Chiefs’ typically rousing version of The Move’s Flowers In The Rain.

The Raconteurs do justice to John Peel favourite Teenage Kicks (originally by The Undertones) and Girls Aloud, incredibly, deliver a breezy, crowd-pleasing version of Wheatus’ Teenage Dirtbag.

The Fratellis do an admirable job of All Along The Watchtower (by the Jimi Hendrix Experience), even though the guitar work doesn’t match up and Franz Ferdinand excel at David Bowie’s Sound & Vision.

Credit, too, goes to Mutya Buena for her classy cover of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car and Klaxons surprisingly restrained version of No Diggity, while the Foo Fighters underline their class with a strong cover of Wings’ Band On The Run.

We could go on – The Pigeon Detectives score highly with The Power of Love (by Huey Lewis) but The Gossip miss spectacularly with their take on George Michael’s Careless Whisper.

Kylie makes Roxy Music’s Love Is The Drug her own but McFly balls-up The Jam’s Town Called Malice. Just Jack triumphs with The Cardigans’ Love Fool and The View emerge perfectly suited to The Libertines’ Don’t Look Back Into The Sun.

And, of course, Mark Ronson, brings a touch of his unmistakeable class to Mary J Blige’s You’re All I Need To Get By (the man can do no wrong). That’s not forgetting Amy Winehouse’s typically classy rendition of Cupid and Groove Armada’s fizzing take on Madonna’s Crazy For You (we won’t mention Natasha Bedingfield’s horrid Ray Of Light).

The best thing about Established 1967 is that it does force you to have an opinion and I’m certain opinions will be divided over the merits of just about every track.

So, either as one of this year’s compilation talking points, or to be a part of your favourite radio station’s cool 40th celebrations, it’s certainly worth checking out. Just don’t expect to be convinced with everything on offer (I’d say it’s about a 50/50 split between what works and what doesn’t). [IL]
