Honestly, I didn’t expect anything this fresh from Kid CuDi. Personal expectations for his debut Man On The Moon: The End Of Day were low. I wrote him off as just another blog fad, riding the electro wave to its crash with the Crookers remix of megahit ‘Day N Nite’, and overshadowed by a star-studded guest list and production on ‘Make Her Say’ without proving anything about his own artistic merit – of which I believed he had none. His flow was too awkward, too much of a pale imitation of his producer and mentor, Kanye West (and we all know by now the world only needs one Kanye West). But after giving the album a solid listen and more, the music has spoken and I’ve had a change of heart: CuDi is for real. Continue reading →

It must be tough to be Jay-Z. Not in the “I’m married to Beyoncé” way, or in the “I’m the reigning elder statesman of rap” way, but in the way that you’ve been around and relevant for so long that you are a magnet for criticism – the oldest active voice of the new school, struggling to remain on the forefront of the game.

Any artist releasing his 11th album faces a challenge. Do you change your style to stay up with the new trends, allowing your sound to evolve while turning your back on the moves that brought you success in the first place? Or do you stick with what works, reprising older successes with a few changes in the hooks and lyrics? It’s a tough decision. Continue reading →

Kid Cudi – Pursuit of Happiness (ft. MGMT & RATATAT)

Kid Cudi Pursuit of Happiness (ft. MGMT & RATATAT) listen

Kid Cudi has been burning up everybody’s radar since his exceptional mixtape hit the web last summer. His chart-topping single, “Day N Nite” has catapulted Kid Cudi to superstardom. Expectations for his debut album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day, were reaching monumental levels at this point.

Because of his affiliation with hip-hop genius Kanye West, we all (I included) came to expect a 2009 College Dropout from Kid Cudi. Not surprisingly, the album leaked before its September 15th release date, and after a handful of listens (4 so far), it misses the bar set by Kanye’s debut album. Man On The Moon is on a whole other playing field, setting up bars of its own. A bar that fellow newcomers Wale and Drake now must meet, and to be frank, a bar they probably cannot hang onto with the longevity proposed by Man on the Moon.

The third official single off the record, “Pursuit of Happiness,” was produced by electronic duo Ratatat and features Brooklyn superheroes MGMT. The beat is smooth and slick — props Ratatat. It wraps itself nicely around Kid Cudi’s painstaking lyrics and MGMT’s subdued vocal contributions.

Man on the Moon: The End of Day is out September 15th and a deluxe edition with a DVD will also be released. Catch Ratatat and Cudi performing “Pursuit of Happiness” on “The Late Night Show With David Letterman” tomorrow (Tuesday). Listen to the track here: Continue reading →

Michael Jackson Tributes: James Morrison, Kid Cudi & Cookin Soul

Michael Jackson Tributes: James Morrison, Kid Cudi & Cookin Soul listen
It’s impossible to keep up with the countless tributes made to honor the late King of Pop, but here are a two that really caught my ear. I first spotted James Morrison’s cover of MJ’s classic (and one of my favorite songs altogether) “Man In The Mirror” on Perez Hilton, natch. James Morrison’s voice is a blessing, but not even his sweet vocals do “Man In The Mirror” justice. Honestly, this is the kind of song that just can’t be done any other way but Michael Jackson’s way.

Listen to James Morrison’s rendition of “Man In The Mirror” here. Continue reading →

Kid Cudi – Mr. Solo Dolo

Kid Cudi Mr. Solo Dolo listenAt one point in 2009, I was looking forward to Kid Cudi’s debut album. Kanye promised it was a “masterpiece” and a “classic in the making” — immediately, thoughts of his own College Dropout came to mind. This high was where the bar now stood for Kid Cudi. Upon listening to A Kid Named Cudi, a person with half a brain would come to the conclusion that Kid Cudi would be able to meet the challenge of producing an album of College Dropout caliber.

It goes without saying (though I have said it again and again) that post-A Kid Named Cudi material has been less than filling. Material from the various mixtapes released by DatNewCudi has left a sour taste in my mouth, more often than not. I don’t know if it’s the sullen, depressing, and boring turn Cudi has taken with his new music or if its the uninspired production he’s rapping over that has left me so uninterested and disillusioned.  Unfortunately, this newest cut, “Mr. Solo Dolo” falls right into place in the worst kind of way. Sour taste in mouth ensues. Listen to it now: Continue reading →

Mickey Factz ft. Kid Cudi – Do My Do

Mickey Factz ft. Kid Cudi Do My Do listen
Now this is something I can really sink my into. Mickey Factz and Kid Cudi are two of my favorite new players in the game and the production on “Do My Do” is straight fire; it’s really something you don’t hear every day. Wale can take some notes on that front.

These two guys collaborating together might be one of the more exciting things to come from hip-hop in a while. Listen to “Do My Do” right here Continue reading →

Chiddy Bang – Southpaw, Brooklyn, May 13 2009

Chiddy Bang Southpaw, Brooklyn, May 13 2009 gigreviews

Southpaw, in Park Slope, is dark and uncrowded. The sparse crowd is an awkward, eclectic mix. In one corner a DJ spins nineties rap, watched by awestruck preppy hipsters in peach button-downs. Most of the crowd clusters happily by the long bar. Chiddy Bang’s first New York City headlining show is performed for no more than forty people, happy drunk girls and guys in their thirties absently sipping a beer and, in one corner, a white-haired couple I assume are somebody’s grandparents.I have never seen live rap before, with the exception of one Talib Kweli song. But Chiddy Bang aren’t really a rap group like you’d expect them to be. Continue reading →
