Paramore – Use Somebody (Kings of Leon Cover)

Paramore Use Somebody (Kings of Leon Cover) covers

I’ve noticed that my favorite covers of the year have been Kings of Leon covers. The lovely Natasha Khan — better known as Bat For Lashes — covered the song that is riding the alternative rock wave that comes around every 5-10 years in radio. Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” is so ridiculously popular, it has spent the last month and a half in the top tier of the American Singles charts; right after kicking ass all over European and Aussie charts, that is. It is definitely good to be the Kings of Leon right now.

Alt, pop-punk, new(-ish) kids Paramore have decided to take a crack at the chart-topper at BBC’s Live Lounge. The group has been making quite a name for itself over these last few months, releasing 2 or 3 successful singles, as well as writing a track for Twilight. They have also toured with No Doubt (I saw them live one once, but twice this year).

They’re a fun band, but I probably give them too much credit because I am just loving their cover of “Use Somebody.” Their cute, fiery front-girl Hayley Williams sounds reserved (compared to the roaring vocals I heard over the summer), and does a great impression of KoL’s Caleb Followill and his signature raspy voice. Listen to it here:

Hannah Montana Hits #1, Silversuns Debut High. KOL, YYYs, DCFC Sell, Too!

After missing the No. 1 spot on it’s debut week, The Hannah Montana Movie’s Soundtrack has finally topped the American Album charts, thanks to strong Box Office numbers. In just 12 days of release, the movie has grossed nearly $60 million in the US. This week’s big debuts are Diddy’s Day26 and their newest, Forever In A Day, which bowed at No. 2 with 115,209 copies sold. Silversun Pickups also debut high with their newest, Swoon, selling almost 49,000 copies in the first 7 days of release (No. 5).

The rest of the top 10 is typical — though I am impressed with the Twilight Soundtrack (No. 4 and features Muse, Iron & Wine,  Black Ghosts, et al) and Taylor Swift’s Fearless (No. 10). After months of being on the shelves, they are still moving Top 10 numbers, selling 56,618 and 31,209 respectively. Sidenote: Wonder why Radiohead’s “15 Step” wasn’t included in the Twilight soundtrack, the song was playing throughout the entire closing credits. What? Radiohead licensed the song for worldwide play in the movie, but doesn’t want to bank on all of these Soundtrack sales? That’s just stupid… As of January 2009, the Twilight soundtrack has sold 2 million copies world wide.

In other sales news,  Kings of Leon is outselling Beyonce with their Only By The Night. The set sold nearly 19,000 this week, landing at No. 18. Also, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are up nearly 20 spots this week, thanks to TV appearances on just about every late night show in existance. This week, It’s Blitz sold 12,478 and reentered the Top 50 at No. 32. Further down the chart, Death Cab For Cutie’s new Open Door EP debuts at No. 34 with just over 12,000 copies sold.

Kings of Leon – Use Somebody (RAC Remix)

Kings of Leon Use Somebody (RAC Remix) mp3
“Use Somebody” has been getting some serious re-imagination action lately. I’m probably getting to the point where I’m going to start telling people not to fuck with this song. Though, I am having a terribly difficult time trying to tell Andre Anjos (aka RAC) that.

RAC has a great track record for his off-beat remixes. They aren’t the most dancefloor-friendly remixes around, but they are flawlessly consistent. RAC’s remix of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” is no exception. Though my favorite is probably his “Just Dance” remix. I really didn’t see it coming.

Bat For Lashes – Use Somebody (Kings of Leon Cover)

Bat For Lashes Use Somebody (Kings of Leon Cover) covers
[rating:72/100]
PMA fave Bat For Lashes stopped by BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge not too long ago and delivered a beautiful cover of Only By The Night-highlight, “Use Somebody.” Bat For Lashes breathes new, minimalistic life into “Use Somebody.” Listening to Caleb’s voice on the original make me yearn for a duet between these two artists. Natasha Kahn’s butterly smooth vocals will simply melt alongside Caleb Followill’s powerful instrument.

In my honest opinion, no cover will best the Kings of Leon version — filled with a storm of lusty, longing vocals. Bat For Lashes’ cover is a great change of pace and is in no way a disservice to the song, but acts pretty well as a foil to the original.

Catch the cover and a bonus “lo-fi” version of Natasha’s amazing “Daniel,” all after the jump. Continue reading →

The Oxygen Festival Lineup is Looking Good

Since I’m in London right now, I’ve been stalking out as much UK music-related news as possible. Unfortunately for me, I leave in May and all the great stuff starts right after.

One of these is the Oxygen Festival — For some reason the website still thinks it’s 2008, so here’s what’s been announced for the lineup so far:

“Kings Of Leon, The Killers, Snow Patrol, Blur will headline this year’s Oxegen Festival with Bloc Party, Razorlight, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, Pete Doherty, Elbow, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Script, Katy Perry, White Lies, Fight Like Apes and Pendulum performing throughout the weekend. Lily Allen, Keane, The Specials, Paulo Nutini, Wallis Bird, Digitalism, The Mars Volta, Swedish House Mafia, Miss Kittin And The Hacker, Crookers and Hockey are also being added to the bill.” — the-fly.co.uk

If you’re in Ireland this summer, definitely check this festival out! I wish I could. Oxegen Festival 2009 will occur at the Punchestown Racecourse in County Kildare Kildare Ireland from July 10th -12th, and general tickets go on sale on March 6th at 8am (GMT).

If anybody knows of any great festivals occurring in the next 2.5 months in the UK, please leave a note about it in the comments!

What’s Going On? January 26-February 1

Whats Going On? January 26 February 1 gigs

As Perez would say, Completely Gratuitous

Another week, another series of concerts across the globe.

In NYC: If you’re an Andrew Bird kind of guy (or girl), check him out at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Monday night, or, if you’d prefer, the Carnegie Hall on Wednesday!

Wednesday night, I highly recommend you snag some tickets, somehow, to catch the Cold War Kids at the intimate Mercury Lounge. If not, however, buy your tickets way in advance for their April Terminal 5 show- I’ll be at that one for sure.

N.A.S.A. IN N.Y.C.! Thursday night! At (le) Poisson Rouge!  Be there. And then stay there until Saturday, catching They Might Be Giants on Saturday for a kids show at 3:00,  and an 18+ show at 8:00!

Two more great concerts in the city- Continue reading →
