Best Songs of the Decade (2000-2009)

I wasn’t going to do this. Working on the Best Albums of the 2000s was going to be enough work. But after reading through some pretty great lists by Pitchfork, I Guess I’m Floating and Gorilla vs Bear, I was reminded of something very important — although the album is the most vital instrument a musician has at his disposal to get an idea or feeling across to listeners, we can’t undermine the importance of a song. A song gives you small doses of relief, comfort, or what have you, minutes at a time.

I gave a fair amount of thought into this list, but for the most part, I knew how it would turn out. This list is mine and mine alone; I am inviting you to my world where I don’t need to explain myself or answer to anyone. But as always, I encourage you all to leave your thoughts and your personal picks in the comment section.

I would like to end with… well, I can’t really say it better than Connor from IGIF. The last 10 years have been the biggest of my life, especially my life as a music lover, so these next 120 songs are the songs that have shaped and molded me into whoever I am today. That’s as personal as it gets.

LCD Soundsystem – 45:33

LCD Soundsystem 45:33 mp3James Murphy’s DFA Records will release a collection of remixes inspired by LCD Soundsystem’s supercharged, brilliant 45:33. Originally, 45:33 was a collaboration between James Murphy and Nike, meant to inspire us to purchase Nike shoes and run. Since then, 45:33 has been given an exuberant physical release, due to an overwhelming demand.

Since its release in late 2007, 45:33 has received universal acclaim from leading critics like Stylus, Pitchfork, AV Club, and cokemachineglow.

James Murphy is currently in the studio, working on a follow-up to his glorious Sound of Silver. In the mean time, sink into the 45:33 remix collection. An mp3 and the tracklisting after the jump Continue reading →

[rating:51/100]
I sincerely believe that there came a moment in everybody’s lives early last year when they first heard the Ting Tings’ “Shut Up And Let Me Go”. There we were, listening to the most hotly tipped music this side of Little Boots, smugly nodding along to a pretty decent song. But then… that yelp! “HEY!”. Computers exploded everywhere, speaker systems were quickly turned off, and thousands of hypem.com perusers trotted down to the nearest Doctor’s surgery to have their ear drums checked for signs of permanent damage. I may still have use of my ears, but Yacht’s latest album, “See Mystery Lights”, contains far too many moments like that. Depressingly, these moments scar an album that is, for the most part, an exceptionally impressive artistic statement and further proof of the genius of James Murphy’s DFA. Continue reading →

YACHT – Summer Song, It’s Boring/You Can Live Anywhere You Want

YACHT Summer Song, Its Boring/You Can Live Anywhere You Want listen
It’s no coincidence that I just got through talking about how great summer songs are. Now YACHT are just making it to easy. This cut, off their upcoming See Mystery Lights due out July 28th, is simply called, “Summer Song.” Given my personal working definition (”luscious, almost eatable…hey fill the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day, scoring every ice cream cone, beach party, bon fire, and that afternoon hammock nap”), naming a track “Summer Song” is quite ambitious. Luckily for YACHT, I respond well to ambition and in the case of “Summer Song,” it pays off generously.

“Move your feet to the summer song,” we are urged throughout this bouncy and unquestionably danceable track. Will it be at the top of everyone’s playlist this summer? Continue reading →

Mason Proper – Get Innocuous/Love Lockdown (LCD Soundsystem/Kanye West Cover)

Mason Proper Get Innocuous/Love Lockdown (LCD Soundsystem/Kanye West Cover) covers
Link Fixed
Mason Proper is a tiny indie band from Michigan and if it wasn’t for their simultaneous cover of LCD Soundsystem’s “Get Innocuous” and Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown,” I probably would have never paid any attention to them at all. Mixing these two songs together is mindbogglingly fantastic! I really didn’t see a combination like this coming.

This cover may have been recorded in 2008, but it’s definitely a powerful contender for my favorite cover of 2009. Big, big props to Mason Proper for cookin’ this up. Listen to “Get Innocuous/Love Lockdown” here Continue reading →

And here is the fourteenth installment of the pmaCAST, a bi-monthly playlist that I hope will enrich and soundtrack your week. I use some all-time favorites (Belle & Sebastien, LCD Soundsystem, Roisin Murphy, Daft Punk, Peaches) as well as some new-found loves (Fred Falke, obiously, everyone else).

I’m not going to upload and post up all of the tracks like I did last time, but I will put up a few tracks featured on this weeks’ playlist that I think will make your life a lot less sucky.

Ratatat – Lex
MEN – Credit Card Babie$
The Pragmatic – You Blame Me

You Oughtta Know: Hockey

You Oughtta Know: Hockey listen

No, not the sport. The awesome, funky, LCD Soundsystem-esque band that is making their way through the blogosphere. That Hockey.

Hockey is hailed as a synth-laden version of The Strokes, or perhaps more accurately by Pinglewood.com: “if Julian Casablancas and James Murphy had met in 80s New York and become inseparable buddies, dragging each other in and out of CBGBs and Studio 54.”

The band is likely to be one of 2009’s big breakout artists, and their great single “Too Fake” shows off immense versatility. Starting out with a new-wave, electro opening and building to a catchy, poppy chorus, “Fake” should be on repeat for all PMA readers this week. Let me know what you think- a YSI download link is posted below.
